Josh Klinghoffer's Gear
"The Super Six Reverb from Fender, Josh occassionally engages the reverb or the vibrato on this just on its own just to be a very mild effect in the background under the three. In general, tone wise, the Major is dialed up to be low-endy and it's the loudest. It's a pretty simple split. You have a nice mid sounding Silvertone. And then this trend is actually pretty quiet, and just as you would expect pretty light and high-endy. it's got a little tinkle to it. But they're all on at all times. All the effects get applied to all of them apart from when he just adds the Fender's reverb or vibrato," says Josh Klinghoffer's guitar tech.

"The Line 6 DL4, he just uses it as a phrase sampler and a looper. So if he feels like just putting a texture in between songs while we change guitars or whatever, even if he's just bored. He samples it himself, lets it run, and then fires it off later in the song to build the stuff up," says Josh Klinghoffer's guitar tech.

"I'm not quite sure where Josh found this. It just appeared a little while ago. Apparently it's very rare I believe. It's a 12-string Firebird. The pickguard doesn't look exactly original to me and also the switching arrangement. We actually went to the House of Guitars the other day and there was one with what appeared to be an original pickguard on it. And I think that's just a switch between the two. It's got 'on/off' on each. Also, it's got that strange off-center bit of inlay there, so I don't know if this was like a factory second or if it was a half-ass prototype before they decided to build a small number of them. Josh hasn't used it on anything at all so far. It's just in here. Sometimes if he's feeling particularly exciting he might tell me before the final song of the show that he wants to use this for the final segment of that song. So when there's a four-bar rest I actually jump up there and swap guitars with him in the middle of the song, and then he will come out and rock with this for a bit. He's used it for the encore jam a few times," says Josh Klinghoffer's guitar tech.
"This one doesn't get used a great deal. It's a Coronado 12-string in this sort of burnt orange. This is the only one that isn't in standard; it's dropped a half step for 'Breaking the Girl'. It very much has a tone of its own. It’s a bit scratchy, there's a bit of a cluster to it, but it suits the version of the song they're doing now. It's not an acoustic song, it's more of a garaged out number so it works. He goes for the neck for the main part and then you go into the main percussive section with all of the tin cans and all when you go to the bridge, and then he really kind of digs in a gets a bit honky. But it suits, it suits very well. I think the color may have had to do something with its purchase," says Josh Klinghoffer's guitar tech.
