Juan Alderete's Gear
At 2:00 in this rig rundown video from Premier Guitar, Juan Alderete talks about his Fender stock fretless bass, saying “This is a 1970 or ’71 Fender stock fretless and I had the lines painted on it because I don’t play jazz, so I’m not at the comforts of a nice controlled room. I play rock, so it’s like this big arena are we’re about to play and it’s hard to hear so I needed that for guidance just to give me that extra edge and tuning if you know about fretless. And so, I had the lines painted on. So, usually this neck is just rosewood and it has these black dots on top. I had Eric get Eric’s guitar and paint the fret lines on it and the dots on it and I have three basses like this but it’s a stock fretless. So, it’s not wood grain, it’s not the frets pulled out but wood notches put in it.”
Juan Alderate demonstrates his FX32 Meat Box in this interview from Premier Guitar. At 5:16, he explains, “When it hits those subs out there it vibrates everything on stage.”Then this is the Meat Box and Meat Box is just sub. It’s just speaker popper… When it hits those subs out there it vibrates everything on stage.”
The “ba, ba” bass part on “Subump” is a sample of the DOD Meatbox. I was messing around with it one day and posted it on Instagram like, “Check out the Meatbox when you really distort it. It sounds crazy.” After I posted it, I was like, “I have to use that.” I tried to recreate that sound in the studio, but I couldn’t, so we basically took my Instagram video and sampled it—that’s that sound.
At mark 15:20 in John (Juan) Alderette's bass instructional VHS.
For Deltron 3030's 2014 tour, Alderete built a fly rig with the BR2, which he demonstrates at 1:07 and uses for the song "Positive Contact".
Juan Alderete used the Lakland USA Series 44-60 (Vintage J) bass while performing with The Mars Volta. A photograph from Google Images shows him playing a model resembling the CS series with Chi-Sonics pickups in a humbucking configuration.
At 0:20 in this video, Juan Alderete explains his history with the Boss CS-2 compressor stating, “I have this compressor. It’s this Boss CS-2 compressor. I’ve been using that since RazorX. That was in 1986. I started using it because I started going to passive pickups but you know like back then everybody was doing harmonics.”
Juan explains what he likes about the CS-2 compared to other compressors by saying, “It’s just the most musical one. I’ve tried so many of them.”

And, we’re back! It’s the mighty skills of premier bass tech (he can tech anything, anytime, anywhere) @mlubetski that got this @fendercustomshop Precision “Raider Bass” back in the game. The bass was made by @flmp67 in the early 90’s for me. It was my first Custom Shop bass, made around the same time Alex made Tim Commerford’s “Denver Bronco” bass. Tim and I used to kick it and we were competitive fans as our teams were rivals. He got a @broncos bass, I got a @raiders bass. The wood piece repair, glued to the bottom of the bass, was done several years after I did the initial damage (thanks @ericsguitarshop) at OG punk club Al’s Bar that was in the Art’s District in downtown LA (back in the Distortion Felix days when I threw the bass across the stage and it hit the wall. This was following a volume argument we had during our set). To say this bass has 9 lives is an understatement. I’d say 29 lives. I’ve never banged a bass around as much as this old dude. I’m am forever in debt to Alex for building it and Mark for saving it. #pedalsandeffects Oh, and that’s it’s second pickguard. Mark had to make a new one because I broke the old one a few months ago. See my Instagram stories to see the OG one.

For Deltron 3030's 2014 tour, Alderete built a fly rig with the compressor being used in conjunction with his Endangered Audio delay. At 3:06, Alderete explains that it's used so the delay repeats stay quiet when going into regeneration.

I’ve used the OG @dwarfcraft Eau Claire Thunder for years and now there’s a smaller, streamlined enclosure one called the Gold Standard? Wait...with germanium diodes and NOS Fairchild 2n5133 transistors??? Hit that link in the bio and hear/read about it on @pedalsandeffects #pedalsandeffects
Juan used the V4B on the MONO Live Jam with Isaiah Mitchel.
In this Rig Rundown video from Premier Guitar, Juan Alderete talks briefly about why he uses the OC-2 Octave. At 4:48, he says, “You gotta have this. Because it’s just a super musical octave pedal.”
On this page of Dunlop's website, it quotes Juan saying, "Punch your bass into the mix with the help of the MXR Bass Overdrive."
On this page of Dunlop's website, it lists an MXR M288 Bass Octave Deluxe Effects Pedal among Juan Alderete's gear.
Juan Alderete, when he's not using his big SVT rig, often uses Ampeg's Portaflex series amps. For one thing, they are much easier on the loading and unloading aspect of things. But also, they give a very good representation of the big SVT heads. The photo submitted was him demoing some gear with Reverb.com along side his fretless fender jazz bass. I love his approach to bass and using effects pedals. I've grown over the years to adopt a similar approach to finding unique sounds with the same instrument. It's opened up my world.
"Maxon, a Japanese company, makes a wonderful, musical compressor that I love to use in the studio. It is of very good quality so I can use it in recordings and the studio. It doesn't enhance your sound like some compressors, rather it compresses and limits your output to make for easy recordings that sit well in the mix. I will be covering more compressor reviews in the next few videos...I hope you watch!" - Juan Alderete

Used on Cryptomnesia, as mentioned in this March 20, 2019 Instagram post.
The doctor @lasynthco to the rescue on this one of maybe 50 made @ehx rack synths. I used one on Cryptonesia and wished I owned it but @infrasonicsound wouldn’t sell me it. I know @jamiestillman has one because @realkidkoala found one in Seattle and told me to buy it but my funds were tied up in another gear purchase at the time. Distortion Felix Manny introduced me to them back in the early 90’s because he sold one to @davidbowie manager for @theadrianbelew and then he had another that he sold to @u2 for The Edge. #pedalsandeffects #ehxfacts
"Having been a player that never used two phasers at once, I was pretty blown away with the sounds I was getting and I now have to retire my Phase 100's for the Phase 99!" via Pedals And Effects
At 6:15 in this video interview from Premier Guitar, Juan Alderete talks about the EarthQuaker Ghost Disaster. “This one is a great sounding delay, but the reverb is really cool too because I love it on dub bass lines with the flat ones and it’s super handy. When you’re trying to make an economy pedal board, well there’s two knocked out right there.”
Juan Alderete demonstrates his Line 6 DL4 at 9:36 in this Rig Rundown from Premier Guitar. He also uses the pedal at 10:25.
