Critic Reviews

Review: Maxon CP-9 Pro+ or… Oops! Time to put foot in mouth… | Guitar Gear

guitargear.org

The Maxon CP-9 Pro+ Compressor/Limiter impresses with its versatile threshold knob and transparent sound, providing a sweet, fat tone ideal for low-volume settings. However, it falls short of the subtlety and high-end shimmer offered by the Demeter Opto Compulator. If versatility is your priority, the Maxon is a solid choice, but those seeking nuanced transparency may find themselves torn between these two distinct beasts. Ultimately, the Maxon stands out for its practicality, though the Demeter's optical circuit remains alluring for its subtle compression.

Maxon CP9 Pro+

ovnilab.com

The Maxon CP-9 Pro+ Compressor/Limiter impresses with its low noise, clear tone, and smooth action, making it a top choice for a clean "utility" compressor. Its versatility shines with a threshold control adaptable to any instrument and a ratio control up to infinity. However, the fixed attack allows initial spikes through and can output a hotter-than-desired signal at lower compression ratios, adding both appeal as an amp overdrive booster and a caution to manage input gain. Compared to peers, it offers superior clarity and compression range, albeit less tonal fatness. With a reliable true bypass and compatibility with standard 9V power supplies, it’s a strong contender for musicians seeking articulate compression.

"Maxon, a Japanese company, makes a wonderful, musical compressor that I love to use in the studio. It is of very good quality so I can use it in recordings and the studio. It doesn't enhance your sound like some compressors, rather it compresses and limits your output to make for easy recordings that sit well in the mix. I will be covering more compressor reviews in the next few videos...I hope you watch!" - Juan Alderete

"My pedalboard setup is fairly simple - Besides a tuner and a wah pedal the four other pedals I use are all made by Maxon. Starting with perhaps my favorite pedal the CP-9 Pro + Compressor - I pretty much leave the CP-9 on all the time. I like to think of it as a quality control pedal for my overall tone. It is really hard to describe what a difference the CP-9 makes in boosting all the great and desirable overtones and leaving the unpleasant ones out. I'm not sure how Maxon dialed this one in so accurately, but they did!"
