Kim Mitchell's Amplifiers
100 watt JCM 800 2203s in road cases stage left, 2x debadged Marshall 1960A cabs center stage.
From the late-80s 'I Am A Wild Party' period onward Kim Mitchell used an overdrive into various tube heads but mostly fell back on Marshalls, like the 100w 2203 (see the Patio Lanters video). Some online say he also uses a modeled amp direct signal from a pedal or rack unit (sometimes including dummy Marshalls on stage). When I saw him play at a smaller room in 2015 he had a Traynor combo on stage, doing very little footwork and not touching the amp during the set.
Guitarists at a Kim Mitchell show notice how quick he is on his guitar's volume control, using it for effect in some of his bigger hits. He played a lot of factory issue Strats during the Max Webster period (tremolo arm often removed) with a Les Paul often at number two. Into his solo career he had a guitar shop frankenstien together a superstrat for him on a Squier neck, Gibson humbuckers, and a single coil centre. This blue guitar evolved over time and has been his main instrument among many fine looking Fender, Gibson, and tilted tele/Music Man type instruments.
This combo amplifier was mainly used for demonstrating purposes. In this video, he is reviewing Gibson Les Paul Traditional.
