MF Doom's Studio Equipment
DOOM says he used an MPC 2000XL to produce the "Beef Rap" beat off the "MM FOOD..." Album. He most likely for the whole album since he says the 2KXL was what he was using "at that time".
From Wax Poetics Issue no 31 p120 2008
What do you use to make beats? Are you messing with the MPC?
Well, I got a bunch of different shit. I like the [[Roland SP-]] 404.
The 404 is a nice, flexible machine.
Is that the one that Madlib uses a lot?
The 303 is what he was fucking with on the Madvillain shit. He put me up on it--the way it felt, and the way you can chop shit up and change it with the twist of a finger, without having to go too much into the parameters. You're spending more time typing on some sequencing samplers than you are actually doing music. The 303 gives that hands-on feel, and, I guess, the 404 is the big brother to that one. They updated it, put more stuff on it.... But I used the 404 and the [Akai] MPC1000 with the JJ OS in it...
The first picture in this interview features DOOM holding a Boss SP-303 sampler.
Used to record vocals for Madvillainy, as stated by yeloocproducer in this November 22, 2006 Gearslutz forum post.
Madvillain I think was straight into a VS880... no preamp or compressor...unless it was maybe a mackie preamp.
I'm guessing Dangerdoom was a bit more mid/hi-fi, again not sure.
Definitely not "rocket surgery"
yelooproducer mentioned its use with Madlib in this August 3, 2008 Gearslutz post.
Madlib... SM57, SM7, or AT4033 if I remember correctly.... pre's would be mackie or VS880 straight in for the most part.
Doom... AT4033, don't know what kind of pre.
This is just what I remember....not positive though.
MF Doom is confirmed to have used the Roland VS-1680 Digital Studio Workstation, as evidenced by visual documentation. Specifically, Doom can be seen holding this piece of studio recording gear in the cover image for "America's Most Blunted" and during a photoshoot at the Museum of Pop Culture in Seattle. This information is supported by photographic evidence available in the public domain.
