Roland VS880 & VS8F1

soundonsound.com

The Roland VS-880 digital multitrack recorder offers a fully digital signal path and an impressive array of features, including mix automation and flexible EQ. While its menu-intensive interface can be cumbersome for accessing routine functions, it delivers good basic sound quality and the benefit of staying entirely in the digital domain. The lack of phantom-powered inputs is a downside, and the complex operating system may deter those used to more intuitive digital audio workstations. However, for users seeking a compact hardware solution with the ability to recall entire setups, the VS-880 holds significant appeal.

Recorded under the name Jaylib, Official (Stones Throw, 2003) is a chopped-up, fractal, freestyle swingfest with both artists building loops for the other to rhyme over. It's the perfect vehicle for what Madlib jokingly refers to as his “caveman method,” in which the main ingredients are a Roland/Boss SP-303 Dr. Sample and a Roland VS-880 digital 8-track.

yeloocproducer on Gearslutz, November 22, 2006 (discussing MF Doom's Madvillainy vocal chain)

Madvillain I think was straight into a VS880... no preamp or compressor...unless it was maybe a mackie preamp.

I'm guessing Dangerdoom was a bit more mid/hi-fi, again not sure.

Definitely not "rocket surgery"

yelooproducer on Gearslutz, August 3, 2008

Madlib... SM57, SM7, or AT4033 if I remember correctly.... pre's would be mackie or VS880 straight in for the most part.

Doom... AT4033, don't know what kind of pre.

This is just what I remember....not positive though.

Eric Persing has had a unique and influential relationship with Roland Corp for two decades. He started as a product demonstrator in 1984, showing some of Roland's first MIDI instruments. He quickly became involved in the R&D side with Roland Japan, earning the title "Chief Sound Designer", and began contributing his design ideas, real-world studio experience and sound design expertise. Persing's skills have left their mark on countless classic Roland instruments.

He is the originator of many legendary Roland sounds that have become part of the vocabulary and lexicon of musical sound. These include the Factory D-50 sounds such as Fantasia, Soundtrack and Digital Native Dance, a majority of the JV/XP/XV series Classics, all the Factory JD-800 sounds, the original Juno "Hoover" sound and thousands of others.

Here is a partial list of the Roland instruments that Eric has contributed his sound design, sampling and design consulting skills:
