Mick Guzauski's Gear
In a SonicScoop interview by David Weiss about mixing Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories, Mick Guzauski said he used the Guzausk-Swist GS-3a Studio Monitor “throughout this whole project,” including tracking, orchestra sessions, overdubs, and mixing at Conway, adding that “pretty much everything I was involved in and what Daft Punk did alone was monitored on those speakers.”
In Universal Audio’s “10 Questions with Mick Guzauski,” Mick Guzauski said he used the UAD Neve 88RS Channel Strip Plug-In while tracking drums on Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories, specifically on toms and overheads, and described its preamp and EQ sections as “very smooth, like the hardware.”
In a SonicScoop interview with David Weiss, Mick Guzauski said that the basic tracks for Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories were recorded simultaneously to a Studer A 827 with Dolby SR at 15 ips and to Pro Tools, then transferred, giving them the option to use the analog or digital versions depending on the song or part.
In an interview with SonicScoop, Mick Guzauski said that during the mixing of Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories, “We mixed to three Ampex ATR-102 half-inch tape machines simultaneously,” confirming his use of the Ampex Corporation ATR 102.
When asked "Can you describe how you would utilize two very different compressors, say an LA-2A versus an 1176?" Mick Guzauski said, "The Teletronix LA-2A Classic Leveler Collection offers a wonderful set of emulations of one of my favorite compressors. I use the LA-2A Silver on bass guitar and vocals when I need a smooth, warm, unobtrusive compressor. In fact, the LA-2A is perfect for ballads, as it's an inherently slow compressor. But if I want faster compression within the LA-2A universe, I use the Gray LA-2A model, which clamps down slightly faster as the signal approaches unity. Conversely, I use the 1176 Rev E version from the 1176 Classic Limiter Plug-In Collection when I want to keep a vocal steady in a dense mix. With the adjustable attack and release time, you can really time it and make every syllable stick out. For more distortion and color on a vocal, I will use the Blue Stripe 1176 plug-in."
In an interview with SonicScoop, Mick Guzauski said that AMS Neve 33609 compressors “got used a lot” during the making of Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories: “We had a bunch of 1176’s which I used a lot... Neve 33609’s got used a lot, an API 2500, the Chandler EMI, and the Cranesong.”
In David Weiss’s SonicScoop interview Icons: Mick Guzauski on Engineering and Mixing Daft Punk’s "Random Access Memories", Mick Guzauski said of the outboard gear used at Conway’s Studio C: “Neve 33609’s got used a lot, an API 2500, the Chandler EMI, and the Cranesong.”
In a SonicScoop interview by David Weiss about Daft Punk's Random Access Memories, Mick Guzauski said that at Conway's Studio C, "Most of our reverb was EMT 140 plates, real ones," identifying the EMT 140 Plate as part of the gear he used.
In Universal Audio’s “10 Questions with Mick Guzauski,” Mick Guzauski says he uses the 1176 Classic Limiter Plug-In Collection, specifically the 1176 Rev E “when I want to keep a vocal steady in a dense mix,” and adds, “For more distortion and color on a vocal, I will use the Blue Stripe 1176 plug-in.”
