Paul McCartney's Gear
I know that the vocals they cut over at CBS are Paul singing live right off the floor with the rhythm section into an Electro-Voice RE20, which was a relatively new mic at the time. They recorded the telephone section [of the song] over at CBS, as well. That character voice was also Paul, with a simple highpass filter engaged to give the telephone effect.”
This is McCartneys personal piano located in his music room in London. He had it painted by pop artists Douglas Binder and Dudley Edwards in 1967. He used it for writing many of the songs on Sgt Peppers.
“I remember the first time I first saw a photo of their painted car in the Sunday Times Magazine and I thought it was really cool. I told them “I’ve got a little piano I’d like you to decorate in that same style”… It became my psychedelic piano which I wrote a lot of songs on, including “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”, “Fixing A Hole”, and “Hey Jude”. It’s in its rightful place in my music room in London.”
Paul McCartney - Interviewed by Norman Hathaway for the foreword of the book -Electrical banana : Masters of Psychedelic Art
On Paul's official artist page on the Yamaha site they write "First came The Beatles, and then, Wings. Today, it's just Paul McCartney solo. Paul has been tied to countless major musicians throughout his career as a songwriter and collaborator - from producing Cliff Bennett, Paddy, Klaus And Gibson and the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, to appearances on sessions by Donovan, Paul Jones and Steve Miller. While Paul McCartney is regarded as one of the foremost musicians in the world, his live shows tend to garner more visibility and regard than may be demonstrated on the music charts. Paul plays Yamaha grand pianos on stage and in the studio."
Paul is seen using the ATH-M50 while recording in the studio at minute 0:19 in the video.
Before switching back to his old magical piano used in previous tours (Knight Upright) he used a Kurzweil PC2x in a magical piano wooden casing.
You can clearly see the Kurzweil PC2x in this Snapshot from "The Space within US" and in the video when he played in Madrid 2003 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F96G0BBHQSo&t=1h40m27s) starting approx. at 1h 40min 32s.
He used it on tour until after the 2005 tour. The last occurrence of this piano was when he played on the "Live and Let Die" live at the X Factor Finals in 2009 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XkbnsTW3WCk at 7min, 22s where you can get a clear shot from behind)
In this photo we can clearly see Sir Paul using a Levy's leather black cotton strap with his custom painted Les Paul.
In 1:32 / 1:33 in the video you can see the lower part of a Martin D-12-20 in Paul McCartney's Guitar holder. In 3:37 you can see the Headstock of the guitar.
“Throughout his career with The Beatles, Wings and as a solo artist, Paul has used many different tools to do the job, and yet every night he goes out there, you’ll find him standing in front of two VOX AC100s. 50 years later they’re still inseparable.”
At 2:23 in the video provided, McCartney can be seen using the Yamaha CP70/80 within the performance (I am unsure on what model of the keyboard). I am unaware whether McCartney ever used this electric grand on any records bu it is evident he used it within live settings from the late eighties.
In this photo, McCartney is seen playing through a Selmer Truvoice Stadium amp.
In 01:10 and 02:04, we can see Sir Paul with his trusty Rick.
Can be seen up close around 0:15, likely used by the other Beatles as well.
At 1:00 you can see the Mesa Boogie Flux Five on Paul's pedalboard
Producer Steve Hoffman has stated his use of the LA-2A for McCartney.
My Teletronix LA-2A, ganged for stereo or mono reproduction via the handy toggle switch in the center of the two units. (...) I've used it on countless projects, Nat "King" Cole, Frank Sinatra, Beach Boys, Doors, Eagles, Ringo, McCartney, Fleetwood Mac, Bob Dylan, Ray Charles, Peggy Lee, Jethro Tull, Chuck Berry, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Van Morrison, White Stripes, Tom Petty, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Ella Fitzgerald, Yes, Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, Steely Dan, Steppenwolf, Bad Company, Jim Croce, Elvis Presley, Billie Holiday, Judy Garland, Dave Mason, Paul Simon, America, The Band, Crosby, Stills & Nash, The Cars, ZZ Top, James Taylor, Art Pepper, Steve Miller Band, Queen, Rod Stewart, Duke Ellington, John Lee Hooker, Al Jolson, Roy Orbison, Bing Crosby, Sammy Davis, Jr., The Who, Lightnin' Hopkins, Bill Haley & his Comets, Miles Davis, Mamas and Papas, Blue Öyster Cult, The Byrds, Eric Clapton, Bill Evans Trio, Blood, Sweat & Tears, Phil Collins, Alice Cooper, Deep Purple, Jeff Beck, Doobie Bros., Faces, Grand Funk, Heart, Billy Joel, Linda Ronstadt, Ten Years After, Grant Green, Wes Montgomery, Pat Benetar, Elton John, Leon Russell, Metallica. etc.
Used for the bass on The Beatles, as mentioned by sound engineer Ken Scott in this June 2012 Sound on Sound interview.
"In addition to Paul's bass being DI'd, the cabinet probably would have been miked with a 4038, [Neumann] U67 or [AKG] C12. I would have used two 4038s on the organ, 67s on John and George's guitars, and it could have been anything on George's vocal.”
Paul McCartney used this piano on his tour through North America. The instrument can be seen in his film "Rockshow" which was created during this tour. Video example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y0dxBnVSARM (6:22)
Play featured with his Gibson Custom L-5 CES
Paul used this bass during the videos from Sargeant Pepper and the Lonely Hearts
In 2012 Paul McCartney played together with the surviving members of Nirvana, in this live performance of their new song "Cut Me Some Slack." McCartney played a Baratto Cigfiddle guitar.
On the back of the Jenny Wren Single, a Martin J-18 is listed as being used in the song "Summer of 59."
This piano was used by Paul during the filming of the "Hey Jude" promotional video. Second source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_MjCqQoLLA 1:31 - 1:34
If you know how a Fender Rhodes sounds, you can clearly notice that Paul McCartney uses one of these instruments during Rockshow. You can also see the back of the Rhodes in 0:50 and 1:05 and the left side in 1:07 while Paul uses it. If you listen to the intro of the song Magneto and Titanium Man you can lock fast that he uses a that kind of instrument. The film Rockshow was recorded during the "Wings over America Tour" in 1976. The title of the video says it was in 79 but it was in 76. The Rhodes Mark 2 was published in 1979 so it can only be that one which was released before the film Rockshow was recorded. So it can't be a Mark 2. Proof URL: fenderrhodes.com/pianos/mark2.html
At 0:49 of the clip, you can see Paul McCartney playing a black colored Ludwig Accent 5-Piece Drumset on the tutorial of his song called "Ever Present Past." (2007).
Paul McCartney uses Ernie Ball Super Slinky Guitar Strings (9-42), as noted in a Facebook post by Ernie Ball.
Paul McCartney used the Marshall Super Bass amplifier during the recording of the album "London Town," as evidenced by a photo from Maccafan.
In his shows Paul McCartney plays a Gibson Ukulele to honor George Harrison. Songs: Something (e.g. 1:36:13)
