Santiago Durango
Santiago Durango's Gear
Durango uses a late 70s Fender Telecaster finished in Sahara Taupe. The checkerboard effect was done with electrical tape and was only added during the band's final tour, as during a January 1987 show at the CBGB, Durango's Telecaster was uncheckered. The two humbuckers in the neck and middle positions are Bartolinis, which were installed in 1986 to replace the previous humbuckers. Among the controls is a toggle switch, presumably for the Bartolinis. Durango used this guitar in Naked Raygun, initially unmodified with a white pickguard and stock pickups. He later added a yellow humbucker in the neck position while still in Raygun. The dual humbuckers and black pickguard wouldn't appear until Big Black. Perhaps it was modified earlier during Durango's brief stint with The Interceptors. The guitar was destroyed at Big Black's final show.
In the as of now inactive Electrical Audio forums, Steve Albini stated that Santiago used a Boss DF-2 Super Feedbacker as his main distortion. This photo backs his statement further.
The JC-120 was one of the amps Durango used during his time in Big Black. He actually had no real preference for amplifier since he could get his sound out of any amp as long as he had his pedal and guitar as per Steve Albini on Episode 15 of the Jughead's Basement podcast.
Durango used Fender Twins whenever they were available. He never showed preference for any particular amp though he mainly stuck with 2x12" combos.
Durango used whatever 2x12 combos he could get ahold of, showing no preference. He most frequently used Fender Twins. This one in particular is a Blackface.
During an undated show, Durango used Steve Albini's custom "That's The Thing" partscaster, presumably as a backup to his taupe Tele.
