Then on the floor I have a delay pedal [Line 6 DL4] and a Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster, which I use for playing leads, and that's it. I just started using this rig on the tour we did this summer co-headlining with Accept—it was a blast.

The preamp sections are tweaked for me by the people at Egnater. One of the modules I have is something that they don't sell. I have two of them. We call it the Gretchen Module because it was designed to emulate the Lab Series L5 as best as possible, and they did a really good job at getting very close on that. So, I have a couple of those and then I have a couple of Egnater EG5 preamps with a mid-boost added to them for me. Then those run into my power amp.

"First and foremost, I recorded—and still record—exclusively with a Shure SM57 because I believe that the magic in that little mic can’t be beat. I can’t tell you how many times engineers would place all these fancy condenser mics two or three feet away from my rig and tell me, “Don’t worry, we’ll get a good tone.” I’d never be happy with it though, so I’d set up the 57 two inches in front of and off the outer edge of the cone and it would always sound better!"

"And believe it or not... one of my favorite guitars is a really cheap one made by Washburn. It’s called a Delta King... really inexpensive one. I got one of the older ones and set it up and it’s like the most perfect playing guitar I have."

"It is hollow body and it’s really thick wood compared to my Epiphone... and just has a super deep, rich tone. I cannot believe this thing is as inexpensive as it is because it kills! It just sounds fantastic and it plays great."

"I’ve got a Les Paul Junior double cutaway that I made myself with P-90s and an Epiphone Dot that I really love that I played on it."

"Right now my pedalboard is... I go into a (Mojo Hand) Rook Royale. That’s my first pedal. I always boost first then I go to overdrive."

GP: Did you use any effects to sweeten the sound at all?

Ty Taybor: No, not really. Occasionally, I’d throw on a very mild chorus with an Alesis MidiVerb. The one thing we would do, especially on the layered tracks of clean guitars and double-tracked leads, was manipulate the tape machine’s VSO (variable speed oscillator) knob to detune one track slightly by just a few cents. It would fatten the sound noticeably but because the oscillation was constant—it stayed stuck at the split—it was much more subtle than a chorused tone.

"The Line 6 Echo Pro and Mod Pro Units have allowed me to streamline and simplify what was once a very complicated, and sometimes unreliable rig. These units have effectively taken the place of 3-4 pedals by allowing me access to various delay, chorus and rotary sounds at the tap of my midi controller"
