Hey Andrew, welcome to Equipboard! And thanks for jumping in to answer Kellen's question. :)
11yover 11 years ago
Hi Kellen, welcome to Equipboard!
We're working on cataloging all of the gear used by notable artists, and we'd also like lesser known artists to share what they use and how they use it. So definitely both.
If something you have isn't on the site yet, you can add it by clicking on the Submit option in the site header and selecting Music Gear. It's generally preferred that you choose a manufacturer/dealer product photo when submitting gear, as that will be the image that shows up when gear is added to a pro artist or a members collection/wantlist.
The gear reviews you're writing are great. We're stoked to have you as part of this community!

Hey aderson, welcome to Equipboard!
Do you have a guitar right now, or are you looking to pick one up and get back into it?
You've got some great pedals on your wantlist. We have the Line 6 DL4 Delay here in the Equipboard office.

I had a great time with family and friends. Hope you did too!
I got a couple of somewhat music related things I've wanted. I do a bit of sDIY and needed a new multimeter, so my wife gave me a Fluke 115 True RMS Digital Multimeter. I also received a copy of Make: Analog Synthesizers by Ray Wilson.
I was most excited about the LittleBits Korg Synth Kit I got for my son. He loved it and spent all day making bleeps and bloops. :)

Categorizing Products on Equipboard
Thanks for letting us know you want the dashboard back.
Would you like a dashboard of new artist and member activity as your logged in home page? Is there any other information you would like to see there?

Categorizing Products on Equipboard
@arthurelectric thanks for pointing these out. I've fixed their categories.
Thanks too for the suggestion of breaking out modular synths by format. That definitely makes sense. I'll see about getting those added when we do our next round of work on categories.
@ diepacheco I'll see about adding those when we do our next round of work on categories.

Thanks for the reply, Daryle. I hadn't considered Yamaha mixers. I'll do some reading up on that one.

Found this synth commercial from 1986 for the Yamaha DX-100. Why aren't there synthesizer commercials anymore?

I was looking at the Mackie Pro FX line, but read some bad reviews about general build quality and USB issues. I had a 1604VLZ in the past and loved it. Has Mackie's quality declined?
Having owned Allen & Heath DJ mixers in the past, I thought I'd look into their studio mixers. The Allen & Heath Zed 10FX looks pretty solid for a small mixer, and gets great reviews, but it lacks channel mutes.
Now I'm looking at the Allen & Heath Zed 60 10-FX, which replaces the pots with 60mm sliders and adds channel mutes. The catch, of course, is the price is much higher.
What small format mixers do you guys use/like? Where's the most bang for the buck?

Hey Corey, welcome to Equipboard!
You're welcome to share a link to the music you're making, or talk about it in general, but it should be done in a new thread or one that's on topic.
You can start a new thread here: http://equipboard.com/forums/general/topics/new

We've just launched a new feature that lets you add videos to product pages on Equipboard.
Here's an example: equipboard.com/items/intellijel-metropolis#review-31745
You can add videos that you've made yourself, or videos that you've found from other people. We'd love to see the best tutorial, demo, unboxing, and review videos for every product on Equipboard.
If you have any thoughts on this new feature, we'd love to hear them.

We’re excited to announce an updated version of artist pages on Equipboard.
Products on an artist’s page are now grouped by their category. This makes it much easier to find out what types of products an artist uses. Want to know what kind of Effects Pedals Jack White uses? Simply click on the Effects Pedals category filter on the left side of his page to view all products in that category.
If you have any thoughts on this change, we’d love to hear them.

Sounds good.
I did see you mention Gary Lightbody. I've added him.
11yover 11 years ago
Welcome!
You first submission and the comments on your gear are great!
Right now it's only possible to add new artists when your Gear IQ is over 500. In the meantime, if there are any artists you want added just let me know and I'll get them added for you.

I was searching for examples of people using the Roland MC-4 with modular synths, and found this really cool video recorded at Senju Campus, Tokyo University of the Arts.

Opinions and thoughts on creativity?
When I feel like I keep heading down the same path w/ my modular patches, I'll try recreating songs or parts of songs that I like and see where it leads me. It's also just a fun way of starting things off when I'm not really inspired to create something that's already in my head.

Does anyone know why this is happening?
Thanks for confirming!
We reduced the padding around text in the header, so it should (hopefully) fix the problem for you on most pages. Since you're a moderator, artist pages have the lengthy "Add Item to This Pro" text in the header and will still break as before.
Let me know if it helped on other pages though.

Does anyone know why this is happening?
Are you able to post a screenshot? If not, here's a screenshot of what I think you might be seeing. http://cl.ly/image/0N1K3g3t2Q1k
Is that the problem you're experiencing?
I was able to make it do that by shrinking the size of my browser window. If you're on a tablet, smaller screen, or have your browser window reduced to a smaller size, that might be the cause. With that said, it's our problem and functionality shouldn't break on smaller screen sizes. We'll need to fix this.

Hey dopesickness, sorry for the late reply!
Eric Clapton is actually already on Equipboard. There's a ton of gear on his page and it wasn't loading properly anymore, so we temporarily took the page down while we work on performance improvements. Unfortunately, I don't have a timeframe for when we'll have his page back up – hopefully soon.
As for adding new musicians – once you have a Gear IQ of 500, you can add artists here: http://equipboard.com/pros/new

Hey eljosha!
I don't have any experience with that particular amp. It does look like some Equipboard members have that amp, and have shared a little about why they like it.
http://equipboard.com/items/vox-ac15c1-combo-amp
This really highlights the need for us to update that page. When you ask a question on a product page, we'd like to have a notification go out to the people who have it so they can potentially provide an answer. We'll get there soon.
In the meantime, I also found some pretty decent reviews on Musicians Friend.
Hope that helps! :)

Welcome to Equipboard!
Pro Tip: The Photos of Your Gear Setup section is intended for a photo of your actual studio setup. We love to see pictures of other people's setups and gear in the wild. :)

Thanks for the heads up on those. I've merged the two into a single page.

You mean Dave Grohl doesn't have a twin with the same name? :)
Seriously though, that's a problem that's left over from the way we had Equipboard structured in the past, where we created different pages for different roles – drummer and guitarist, in the case of Dave Grohl. We'll definitely get his multiple personalities unified and living on one page.
We're still working on resolving the problem of duplicate gear submissions. In the meantime, we're just merging them as we come across them. If you spot any that you would like merged, please post them here and I'll take care of it.

Categorizing Products on Equipboard
Thanks for letting us know you're missing the "Dashboard" view that we used to have on the home page. We've heard this same feedback from quite a few people now.
We definitely plan on making recently added artists and equipment easy to find again. In the meantime, we put this together so you can still see what's recently been added to Equipboard.
11yover 11 years ago
Dubvision hasn't been added as an artist to Equipboard.
It looks like you added them as an item. I've deleted that since items on Equipboard are things like synthesizers and headphones, not people.
I just tried adding them as an artist for you, but there's a bug that needs to be fixed. I'll have our development team fix that bug on Monday and we'll get DubVision added as an artist for you. Once they're added, you'll be able to add the gear they use.
We'll also be making the option to add new artists to Equipboard available to the public very soon.

Feature request: Better filters for gear
Love this idea!
We're working on a new page that will let you filter gear by categories. I could see your idea implemented as a filter that could be applied to this page. Here's a sneak peek:
http://f.cl.ly/items/1u0g0W2T1g2O1L121f3b/Image%202014-09-26%20at%204.09.26%20PM.png
So if I were looking at: Musical Instruments > Studio Recording Gear > Computer Recording Maybe it would be interesting to then filter those results further by artists/pros?
I could see that being really useful if I was looking for something specific, like a new audio interface, and wanted to get an idea of what my favorite artists use.
Would love to hear other people's thoughts on this.

Hi, and welcome! How'd you stumble across Equipboard?
You've already got some great gear on your board!
I'm a fan of Hieroglyphics, too. :)

I've had my eye on the Roland TR-8 for a while, but was hesitant to purchase because it couldn't easily integrate with my modular synth setup. Today I learned Roland is releasing this: http://www.rolandus.com/products/details/1339
I'm pretty excited about this thing. I've read that pricing hasn't been announced yet, though I've seen it listed on Sweetwater for $499. Yikes! That's quite a bit more expensive than I would have expected. It's the same price as the TR-8.
Is anyone else excited about this? What do you think about the price?

Glad you're liking the band pages so far!
There are so many artists that still need to be added to Equipboard. And you're right, you should be able to add them yourself. Here you go!
12yalmost 12 years ago
It's basically based on submitting quality content and your reputation in the community. Specifically, that means submitting accurate content with detailed blurbs, being consistently involved, and generally helping make the site better.
Your submissions look great so far. Thanks for taking the time!
12yalmost 12 years ago
That's a great question!
We actually just started adding bands based on the individual artists who are members of a band. Here are The Beatles on Equipboard. All of the members of The Beatles, depending on your point of view, are there as well.
Band pages are definitely still a work in progress. One idea we have, is to aggregate content on the band pages based on the members of the band. That leads me to believe that, at some point, we may need to make a connection between what instrument an artist played and at what point in their career they played it.

Categorizing Products on Equipboard
Quick update! We've narrowed down the previous massive list to some top level categories that we believe will make a good starting point. As I mentioned before, we can always expand or make adjustments where it makes sense.
Any thoughts on these product categories?
- Musical Instruments
- DJ & Electronic Music
- Keyboards & Synthesizers
- Drums & Percussion
- Guitars
- Bass Guitars
- Guitar Effects Pedals
- Folk & World Instruments
- Instrument Accessories
- Studio Recording Gear

Thanks for sharing your idea. I think it's great!
I've created a group for Equipboard on Soundcloud. Let's start with that and see how much interest there is from the community in sharing the sounds we're all making. It's a public group, so everyone please feel free to upload your tracks. If your Equipboard username isn't the same as your Soundcloud username, maybe add a comment or tag so people know who you are here.
I've added a short clip of my first time using the Intellijel Shapeshifter module. :)

Categorizing Products on Equipboard
We're working on adding product categories and I wanted to get your valuable input. Our thought is that adding more structure and data around products will enable us to create new ways of exploring gear on Equipboard, like filtering by 'Synthesizers & Workstations' to see all products of that type and the pros that use them.
We're currently looking at the possibility of using a service called Semantics3 as a starting point for product categories. It's not perfect, but I think we can make changes as needed.
What are your thoughts on using this as a starting point?
Here's how Semantic3 categorizes Musical Instruments: (Numbers in parenthesis are their category IDs):
