I don't know anything about the EHX Microsynth. I don't pretend to have any knowledge of hardware synths at all. That's a really cool video though.

Yeah, absolutely. The only reason I use Sytrus for simple stuff is that don't have any good subtractive synths. Except Synthmaster, but that sometimes gets buggy, and I'm not so into that mod matrix; you have to actually connect an envelope to the filter cutoff in the matrix instead of having one already assigned. Not the biggest deal in the world, but it stifles creativity. I mentioned that I really want to get Harmor, and I'm also thinking about Serum (I'm waiting to be eligible for an educational discount), so I should be set soon.
Any thoughts on the filters in Sytrus? Fruity Love Filter? How about Harmor and Serum?

I tried out one of the Moog bass synths in a music store (was either the Sub Phatty or the Minituar, maybe a different one? not sure which) and it was awesome! Loved the filters and everything. Tried out a Voyager as well (they're actually on their last run, it's going to be a hot collector's item one day) and the reese basses you can make with them... Wow.
But everyone knows about the Moogs. I've been thinking about Sytrus (IL) which I use extensively. The amount you can do with that thing is amazing. But for some reason I feel that even though there's a nice amount if control on a lot of things, it's not really accessible in terms of just playing with knobs or stuff like other synths (note; I'm talking in terms of subtractive synthesis kind of sound, for FM it's awesome). I've tried Harmor (which I'm planning on buying really soon), and just by playing around with some features I made a sound that I never would have using Sytrus. I know that Harmor is additive (and Sytrus can also be), but I mean the style of sounds. This is probably a personal workflow kind of thing but I think that Sytrus is less ''instant'' for certain sounds, but if you know what you want to do you can go real deep. It doesn't help that Harmor has some awesome effects, and that the filters on Sytrus are just terrible (in my opinion). I think most of the filters in FL aren't that great. They don't have that ''warm'' sound, and feel very utilitarian. For some reason Harmor's filters (at least some of them) sound much better.
Then I have Synthmaster, which I've used for a while but I'm only starting to see that it can be pretty great. I still can't get a decent sounding unison out of it though. What I use now for nice supersaws is a Patcher preset I made modeled after the big saws in FL 12's New Stuff. If anyone wants the patch then just ask and I'll drop a Dropbox link.

The name of this thread was potentially offensive, maybe even a little offensive TO ME before I reminded myself that the OP probably meant nothing by it and doesn't have any way of knowing that my beloved cousin Jenny is handicapped in this way. I don't think it was lost on anyone that the OP is a younger member, probably a highschool sophomore, so a little sophomoric language is par for the course. He's a kid and I am not a big fan of beating on kids, literally or metaphorically. Adolescence is about testing boundaries and we all did it and we all hurt some feelings in the process, probably without thinking twice about it. Most of us who are now adults probably do not even remember all the foolishness that came out of our teenaged mouths. Its always harder to point the finger at yourself than at someone else, right?
Well said.

Complaints, Concerns, Errors, Suggestions, and Ideas!
So, the winter vacation just started, and I reached 20,000 gear IQ
Congrats man that awesome! I'm starting to feel ashamed hanging around here with my puny submission record
hopefully, I somewhat helped Equipboard,

equipboard.com/pros/dave-grohl/dave-s-throne - I have no idea if this should be kept. It seems to me like a cute little idea, but if we are unmerciful with all the video games and stuff, should we delete this also?
No, we need to keep that. If these things aren't done too much (or not the in the right context) they give a sort of charm to Equipboard. But yeah, that chicken soup needs to go.

Yeah narcist, wrapped up the last bit of Imagine Dragons tour in Europe which was pretty full on,
Guess I haven't been around here long enough; what do you do?

Complaints, Concerns, Errors, Suggestions, and Ideas!
His review on the ski mask got up-voted once. Strange... you only get +1 for an up-vote. That is 115 IQ, leaving one more unaccounted for.
Actually, I accounted for that up-vote (three reviews and one of them has two points (the up-voted one)), so that still leaves two unaccounted for.
t's a basic nuisance. EquipBoard started out as a sort of archive site, and ended as an archive site. The only difference is that it's focused entirely on musicians.
I guess that falls under the jurisdiction of the site's owners/founders (not saying you're wrong though). Who I think are gcharian and michael.

I'm trying to figure out how jihadijohn has 116 gear IQ. I count 100 for the picture, and four for his reviews. Anybody know where he would have gotten the other two?

This has been the most disconcerting review I've ever witnessed on this site.
My sides... they hurt
Yeah, Equipboard is great.
On that subject, this needs to be deleted.
I don't know. From my limited knowledge (read zero) of fishing, this seems to be a legitimate overview of the gear used by this guy to fish. are there any official rules about non-music pros?

Well, you probably could use some other effects plugins (I'm basing this off of what you have on your Equipboard), but probably not yet. It sounded from your OP that you're just starting, what you need right now to produce listenable tracks, is time. You said you play piano and guitar, so you're ahead of the game, but you need to just produce stuff for a while to just get better. As you learn and get better you'll probably want to get different plugins etc.
Again buy DJ equipment if you plan on DJing (in the near future). If not then you'd do better saving your money and seeing what you can use a few months (at least) down the line.
10yover 10 years ago
I don't know anything about DJ controllers, but are you actually going to DJ? Production and DJing are really two separate skills. While you can do both, make sure you know what you want to do, and buy towards that.

This is not argumentative, but rather a serious question: Will my vote make a difference in major elections if I live in a state which always votes one way? Isn't the fight all about the ''swing states''?

No idea. I'm just a 17 year old who doesn't have a clue.
Excuse me, but bullcrap excuse. Watch the news in the morning, change between news sites...
I guess it depends with what. If going to try to research (and by research I mean reading news etc. I'm not going to write a thesis) a lot of different policies and similar things, I'm going to get from some places that this particular view is brilliant for whatever reason and then I'll go in another site and I'll get a whole write-up about the other view is brilliant for some other reason etc.
It's all usually based on that particular network/site/paper's political leanings and such. And even if you would say; ''read all the different sides and make an informed decision'', on complicated issues there's usually more then meets the eye and a lot more factors to consider than just what the media is giving you.
I've found that hating on people for saying stupid things is much easier, requires less brain function altogether, and seems infinitely cooler. So until I find reason to believe that me knowing anything will change anything, I'll just kind of ignore the stuff that I think require too much thought. Morbid maybe, but I guess that's just a byproduct of our ''glorious country'', and it's ''culture'', and ''society''.
10yover 10 years ago
No idea. I'm just a 17 year old who doesn't have a clue. But since I'm American (well, I live in the US...) the news is full of American politics, which seems to always involve a ton of criticism for everyone all around.

If we were to enumerate all of them it would probably crash the site, so everyone please show some restraint.

His Equipboard checks out; he's got what he needs (at least for now).
10yover 10 years ago
Once we're asking questions; How does Equiboard support itself? I don't know anything about these things, but I'm assuming it cost money to have a site?

You can look through the Edmproduction subreddit's Sidebar (https://www.reddit.com/r/edmproduction/wiki/sidebar/newbiefaq), and just hang around there from time to time to get some tips etc.

I need that bass sound from Iggy Azaleas Song fancy
You see, back then I also didn't agree with you (fully). The basic shape and all is pretty simple (fast attack and decay on the filter with some resonance), but there's a certain quality about it that stands out. The same with thew preset so you can't really say it's the processing. It has a certain ''thickness'' or you could just say it sounds Phat. I should really revisit that preset now that I know more about how Harmor works. It seemed to use some sort of weird waveform for a source, have to check it out.
10yover 10 years ago
Yeah, I guess it's how you say/do/project (wrong word!) it, as opposed to what you're into or what you say. You're welcome for the memories, and yeah, I could keep on doing the whole one-upping thing, but who has time for that? Oh wait, you probably do...

Mastering EQing and compressions on FLS
Seconding elbeejay. Mixing is a whole separate skill that you're going to need to learn to get your tracks sounding good. Look up EQ, compression, and don't be fooled by plugins that will ''do wonders to your mix''. Ozone is a great mastering plugin, but you'll have no use for it until you really know what you're doing; heck I barely have a use for it yet after 2 years of plugging away at this (pun intended). Try to find tutorials that will take you though a full mix process once you know what EQ and compression are.

I need that bass sound from Iggy Azaleas Song fancy
That bass sound is almost impossible to find perfectly recreated except in Harmor. The preset Analog Bass 2 sound exactly the same, and it probably came from there originally. I made a thread about the same sound a while ago. I couldn't find almost anyone who reproduced it well.
You should look into sound design overall as it's very useful, especially if you're only using FL stock synths, since there aren't many great presets for those. Search for ''Sytrus presets'' or ''Harmor presets''.
bengt_alexsander; You're actually pretty wrong about that. Sytrus is a synth with enormous capabilities, and Harmor is basically unmatched by any synth on the market today for additive synthesis. FL (or Sytrus, not sure which you were referring to) is not ''a toy''. It does not take ''so much more work than just using Ableton Live, or Reason, or any other proper DAW.'' to make something that sounds good. I'd suggest you seriously research what you're saying before bashing different gear etc. Take a long look at the Power Users page on Image Line's site, before saying that FL isn't a ''proper DAW. Look up SeamlessR's youtube channel to see exactly what you can do with Sytrus, Harmor, and a lot of other IL products (using FL). Please don't make uninformed assumptions.

There are good headphones, great headphones... and $55,000 headphones :-|
Wow, you really hate these kind of outrageously priced hi-fi stuff. I know they're probably just ripping off anyone who buys them by... probably $50-54,000, but why do you care so much if some over-rich, overly-snobby ''hi-fi'' wannabes waste their money on it?

Items that aren't products (e.g., body parts) are not acceptable submissions
Maybe we can keep adding these kind of items in good fun; but just not give submission points for them. Or is most of the problem that they just clutter up EB?

well hi I'm new to making music.
First off, you need to decide what you want to do. Producing and DJing are two separate skills, and while a nice amount of producers can DJ, not all DJs can produce. You can do both, but one does not need the other.
Now, if you want to produce, this is a good beginners resource: https://www.reddit.com/r/edmproduction/wiki/resources
I can't really think of something I should tell you before you start learning, except that you should be doing this (well, there is no should, this is really just advice) because you want to create music etc. Not because you want to ''be famous'', become the next Martin Garrix, or whatever. If you're doing it just for that you're going to become discouraged very quickly. Getting to any semi decent sounding level can take a long time (although that doesn't mean you want like what you're doing until then). If you do it because you love making music it will be an enjoyable journey (albeit tough at times).
Good luck!

It's gone. You have to do it in the piano roll, it's one of the things I miss the most.

Yeah, with hobbyists it's not such a big deal (I'm assuming your not trying to make money off of your music). I just found some other stuff so I'll let you know if They're good enough.
Edit: Whoa my reply seems a little off to your first sentence:)
