Founded in 2012 in Athens, Greece, by hardware developer Yiannis Diakoumakos, Dreadbox is a boutique manufacturer of analog synthesizers, effect pedals, and Eurorack modules. The company grew out of DIY roots — Diakoumakos began by building pedal clones and a Moog Taurus replica before turning to original designs. Dreadbox debuted at NAMM in 2014 and has since earned a reputation for delivering warm, characterful analog sound at accessible price points, all hand-assembled at their Athens workshop.
The Dreadbox lineup spans desktop synthesizers, effects, and modular gear. The Erebus, a compact semi-modular mono-synth, served as an early breakthrough, while the Typhon became one of their best-selling instruments. The Nymphes, a portable six-voice polyphonic synthesizer, and the Nyx, a paraphonic analog synth, are also staples of their catalog. On the effects side, pedals like the Komorebi chorus/flanger and the Disorder oscillating fuzz have found a following. Dreadbox has also collaborated with other manufacturers, partnering with Polyend to create the Medusa, a hybrid analog/digital synthesizer, and with Andertons to produce the Murmux.
Dreadbox is recognized as a pioneer in the semi-modular synthesizer space, offering musicians flexibility and creative routing without the complexity of a full modular system. Every instrument and pedal is designed and hand-built in Greece, and the company maintains a compact team of engineers, programmers, and assembly staff dedicated to analog circuit design.
Dreadbox has 64 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Modular Synthesizers, Synthesizers, and Guitar Synth Pedals. Dreadbox's catalog spans the full price spectrum — from entry-level options to high-end flagships.
