Features and functionality

  • The new FM mode is praised for enhancing sound design options, adding value post-discontinuation.

    Source
  • The Medusa's display shows CC parameters when knobs are turned, aiding in precise sound adjustments.

    Source
  • The grid's monochrome light levels can be difficult to interpret in isolation, making it hard to distinguish between note and modulation states without adjacent pads for context.

Critic Reviews

Polyend/Dreadbox Medusa

soundonsound.com

The Dreadbox Polyend Medusa is a strikingly versatile hybrid synthesizer and sequencer, combining analogue warmth with digital flexibility. However, it stumbles with its small, unresponsive pads and a convoluted sequencer that feels overly menu-driven. The sound engine impresses with its paraphonic capabilities and solid build, but the MIDI implementation and lack of patch naming can frustrate more advanced users. While firmware updates have improved functionality, some quirks remain, making it a unique but imperfect offering for those seeking both a synth and a performance controller.

Polyend/Dreadbox - Medusa - Waveform Magazine

waveformmagazine.com

The Dreadbox Polyend Medusa stands out as a unique hybrid synthesizer, blending analog and digital elements with an innovative grid-based sequencer. Its sound design capabilities and modulation options are impressive, allowing for intricate sonic exploration. However, the limited palette of wavetables and potential dominance of analog oscillators can restrict creative output. Additionally, the lack of built-in effects may deter those looking for an all-in-one solution. While the learning curve can be steep, the Medusa rewards persistence and interaction, making it a compelling choice for adventurous electronic musicians seeking something different in a crowded market.

Dreadbox & Polyend Medusa review | MusicRadar

musicradar.com

Dreadbox and Polyend's Medusa is a daring hybrid synth that merges analogue warmth with digital versatility, showcasing impressive sound design potential. While its characterful engine and modulation capabilities are commendable, the absence of essential features, like onboard effects and some sequencing functionalities, holds it back from being a complete instrument. The interface, though stylish, can be confusing due to shared controls, and presets fail to fully capture Medusa's capabilities. As it stands, it's a work in progress; those eager to experiment might find it worthwhile, but others seeking a polished all-rounder may need to wait for future updates.

Review: Polyend/Dreadbox Medusa

musictech.com

The Medusa by Dreadbox and Polyend showcases a unique blend of analog and digital synthesis with a robust sequencer, but it comes with a steep learning curve. Build quality is solid, and the sound palette is rich, especially in monophonic mode. However, the sequencer's complexity and lack of intuitive controls can frustrate users, making it less accessible for beginners. While the potential for live performance is high, the intricate setup may deter those seeking simplicity. Overall, the Medusa is a powerful instrument that shines in capable hands but may leave others feeling overwhelmed.

Fantastic paraphonic Synth with versatile grid sequencer!

Great analog OSC + rough Wavetables! Even simple FM is possible. Fat and musical Filter. Easy to program. Not very snappy Envelopes, but beside this downside it is absolutely stunning. Very versatile Sequencer . Pads are pretty cool (MPE!)

Much better than expected, especially with the latest OS! There is nothing comparable to this outstanding Grid Synth on the market. NOTHING!
