Make Noise is a Eurorack modular synthesizer manufacturer based in Asheville, North Carolina, founded by Tony Rolando in 2008. Rolando, a self-taught electronic instrument designer, honed his craft through years of building electronics for artists and working at Moog Music before striking out on his own. His first module, the modDemod, sold out almost instantly through an online forum, and the company grew from there through a bootstrapping cycle of hand-building modules and reinvesting the proceeds.
The company is best known for Maths, one of the most iconic and widely used Eurorack modules ever made — a versatile function generator capable of serving as an envelope, LFO, oscillator, and slew limiter. Other landmark products include the Shared System (a complete modular voice combining Make Noise's analog and digital modules into a self-contained instrument), the 0-Coast (a semi-modular desktop synthesizer blending East Coast and West Coast synthesis philosophies), and the Strega (a collaboration with Alessandro Cortini). Digital module designs have been developed in partnership with Tom Erbe, the creator of SoundHack, yielding modules like the Morphagene and Erbe-Verb.
Make Noise occupies a distinctive position in the modular synthesis world, drawing heavily on the legacy of Don Buchla and West Coast synthesis while forging its own experimental identity. The company's instruments have found use among artists like Alessandro Cortini of Nine Inch Nails and sound designer Richard Devine, as well as in academic settings such as Berklee College of Music's modular synthesis program.
Make Noise has 87 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Modular Synthesizers and Synthesizers. Their gear is featured by 111 artists, with the strongest followings in Electronic, Rock, and Pop. Notable users include Richard Devine, Andrew Huang, and Mebitek. Make Noise's catalog spans the full price spectrum — from entry-level options to high-end flagships.
