Founded by Émilie Gillet in France around 2010, Mutable Instruments became one of the most influential Eurorack modular synthesizer manufacturers. Gillet, who previously worked in signal processing and machine learning at Google and Last.fm, began experimenting with Arduino boards in 2009 and created the Shruthi-1 hybrid monosynth as a DIY kit, which proved popular enough to formalize into a business. From there, Mutable Instruments went on to produce a celebrated lineup of digital Eurorack modules spanning oscillators, effects, modulators, and utilities.
The company's catalog includes some of the most iconic modules in modular synthesis: Braids and its successor Plaits (macro oscillators), Clouds and its successor Beads (granular texture synthesizers), Rings (a resonator based on physical modeling), Elements (a modal synthesizer), Marbles (a random sampler), Grids (a topographic drum sequencer), Tides (a tidal modulator), Warps (a meta-modulator), and numerous utility modules like Veils, Shades, Links, Kinks, and Branches. Earlier non-Eurorack products include the Shruthi-1 and Ambika hybrid synthesizers.
Mutable Instruments distinguished itself through a commitment to open-source hardware and software design, with full schematics and firmware source code publicly available. This philosophy led to widespread adoption of Mutable's DSP algorithms beyond the original modules — Arturia's MicroFreak and MiniFreak synthesizers incorporate Mutable Instruments oscillator engines, and software recreations appear in platforms like VCV Rack. Production of all modules ceased in 2022, but the open-source legacy ensures the designs remain accessible to builders and developers.
Mutable Instruments has 36 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Modular Synthesizers, Tabletop Synthesizers, and Synthesizers. Their gear is featured by 69 artists, with the strongest followings in Electronic, Rock, and Pop. Notable users include Andrew Huang, Richard Devine, and Deadmau5. Mutable Instruments's catalog spans the full price spectrum — from entry-level options to high-end flagships.
