Founded in 2008 by electronic engineer and techno enthusiast Gur Milstein, Tiptop Audio is a Los Angeles-born manufacturer of Eurorack modular synthesizer modules with production facilities in Thailand. Milstein launched the company from a small flat in the Hollywood Hills during a period when many synthesizer manufacturers were folding, aiming to bring analog sound and hands-on control back to electronic musicians.
Tiptop Audio is known for a wide range of Eurorack modules spanning drum synthesis, effects processing, sequencing, and sound generation. Their lineup of individual 808 and 909 drum voice modules lets users build custom analog drum machines in Eurorack format. The Z-DSP digital effects platform, the ONE sample player (co-designed with Datach'i), and modules like the Trigger Riot gate sequencer and Circadian Rhythms clock divider have become staples of many modular setups. The company also produces the popular Mantis portable Eurorack case and the ZEUS power supply system, making them a one-stop shop for modular infrastructure.
A defining chapter for Tiptop Audio is their official collaboration with Buchla to produce Eurorack-format versions of Don Buchla's legendary 200 series modules, making historically rare and expensive designs accessible to a broader audience. Building on this legacy, Milstein developed the ART (Analogue Real-Time) system — an open, royalty-free standard for pitch control and polyphony in Eurorack — along with modules like the TRIAX8 eight-voice polyphonic analog oscillator. Tiptop Audio also runs Tiptop Audio Records, a label releasing music made with modular synthesizers.
