Brian states that he uses a Brown box. This gets the correct power to his amps at higher voltages. he states that he learned this trick from watching a rig rundown of AC DC. AC DC use a piece of gear that attenuated the power, but "was the size of a small car". Brian wanted to find something that does the same thing, but an average person could use and afford.

Do you have any ‘secret weapon’ gear in the studio that you won’t risk on the live stage?

I do! I have a great Marshall I pulled off the road because I was afraid to ruin it. It’s a white 20th Anniversary 2203 JCM 800, 100 watt from ’82. There’s something about the head that is intangible. It has real ghost mojo.

Brian plays through two Marshall Plexi amps. Both amps are modded to have the famed Dookie mod that Billie Joe of Green Day has in his amps. I’ve an early 90’s Japanese Gretsch Duo Jet that I’ve used on every Bad Religion Record. It’s just a great guitar and fits in perfectly between conventional humbuckers and single coils.

I also have a 1960 Epiphone Coronet that has a weak neck joint, so it’s not super stable. It only weighs around five pounds! It wouldn’t work on tour, but it records so well it’s scary.

One of the Guitars Brian has with him on the road is his Gibson R9 les paul standard. He states that he purchased this guitar from Chicago Music Exchange. He believes that it was a Chicago Music Exchange exclusive guitar.

rian Baker tours with a pair of early 1990s Marshall 1987X 50-watt plexi handwired Reissues. Both amps have the "dookie" mod that creates a cascading gain structure that allows you to control the input volume. After watching the AC/DC Rig Rundown, Baker took the idea of the Kikusui PCR4000M Power Supply that Angus Young used and applied it to his rig. He doesn’t have the financial standing to tour with those, but after some online sleuthing, he found a cheaper solution in the AmpRX BrownBox that gives his amp safe, consistent power. (One of the heads was actually a loner from Billie Joe Armstrong, but fortunately for Baker, Armstrong hasn't missed the head so he's been enjoying it onstage for years.)

to give the FOH engineer some live options, Brian totes along a Kemper Profiler so he can choose between the tube amps or the modeling rig, depending how it sounds in each room each night. He was turned on to the Kemper by Chris DeMakes of Less Than Jake. Brian started using The Kemper mainly for fly in dates. The band was going to places Brian had never been before, so he didn't want to worry about using rental gear. He wanted a way to bring every he needs with him
