Founded by scientist and engineer Thomas Barefoot along with CEO Tedi Sarafian, Barefoot Sound is a Portland, Oregon-based manufacturer of professional studio monitors. Thomas Barefoot, who taught himself to build guitars and amplifiers as a teenager in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, earned a physics degree and worked at Intel on semiconductor technology before building his first studio monitor in 2004. By 2006, demand for his designs led him to leave Intel and pursue monitor manufacturing full-time. All Barefoot Sound speakers are assembled and tested at the company's 8,300-square-foot Portland headquarters.
The company's product line spans compact nearfield monitors to large-format main systems and subwoofers. The Footprint series (Footprint01, Footprint02, Footprint03, and Footprint03C) offers tri-amplified designs at various price points, while the MicroMain series (MicroMain26, MicroMain27, MicroMain45) targets mid-to-high-end studios. The flagship MiniMain12 and MasterStack12 serve mastering and mix rooms demanding the highest resolution. The LFE15 subwoofer uses Barefoot's proprietary Dual-Force technology with two opposing 15-inch drivers for extension down to 15 Hz. Other proprietary technologies include MEME (Multi-Emphasis Monitor Emulation), which allows users to switch between emulations of classic monitor voicings, and SPOC DSP processing.
Barefoot Sound monitors are used by Grammy-winning engineers and producers including Chris Lord-Alge, Tom Lord-Alge, Butch Vig, Eddie Kramer, Jack Joseph Puig, and Michael Brauer. Artists such as Dave Grohl, Lady Gaga, Jay-Z, Travis Barker, and Zac Brown have worked with Barefoot monitors in their studios. The MicroMain27 has become a widely adopted reference standard in professional recording studios worldwide.
Barefoot has 26 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Active & Passive Monitors and Studio Subwoofers. Their gear is featured by 103 artists, with the strongest followings in Electronic, Pop, and Rock. Notable users include Flume, Virtual Riot, and Randy Jackson.
