Items that aren't products (e.g., body parts) are not acceptable submissions

This was going on since the beginning, back when people were submitting the gear that hunters used to hunt and fishermen used to fish. They would throw all sorts of stuff on there.

I don't see any drink or food as gear personally. Even for the bands that heavily used drugs as their reason for "creativity". I wouldn't think people in search of what gear say Dave Mustaine used to get his sound, would be searching for Heroin but rather what actual items made the physical sound. Think of a gear page like a list of things your taking to go camping. Sure, it would be cute to put on the list "Bring a smile and a sense of adventure", but it wouldn't really be an important physical item that the scout would need to expect to use.

The cigarettes were big ones for me. If you were to use the EB to tell a kid how to sound like his guitar hero, would mentioning what brand of cigarettes make or break the kid's ability and tone? Of course not.

I'm alone on THIS one, but I also find the listing of things like "Keyboard" and "Mac 9x" a bit unimportant, but the majority of staff find it important. I feel it's not due to the keyboard as being a common sense item and the model of computer used un-instrumental to the actual tone of the music. Like anyone would say "Dude. you can totally hear an 8X on this track instead of a 9X being used for the mixing. That's his secret!"

This pleases me. I always got irritated at seeing cigarette brands, energy drinks, and sunglasses as gear. Always seemed like an attempt to try and gain submission counts without putting in any real info.

I just don't get high gain amps.

Then the question is, which is the best guitar for metal for people who don't play metal?

You mean there are people who don't play Metal?

DC Versus Marvel

I'd say it's neutral territory. Marvel and DC exist alongside Vertigo and feature crossovers. When you look at Death from Vertigo DC, she looks an awful lot like Marvel Death.

I have done zero submission this month however, I believe my natural optimism and spunk should account for something. A medal maybe... OR A STATUE! Yeah, I think I'd dig a statue. One of me holding a smaller replica of a larger statue.

DC Versus Marvel

I just discovered something about the DC Universe. Since death is considered "One of the Endless", she is actually above Necron and such. She is bound by no rules as being the oldest of the endless. She visits every person when they are born and takes each person to the other side when they die. She lives as a mortal for 24 hours and takes herself to the other side each day to remember the value of it all.

In the end of everything, after she's taken every living being to the other side, including the other endless, she will be by herself for eternity.

Complaints, Concerns, Errors, Suggestions, and Ideas!

How about adding a few features, like separators for each kind of equipment you have on your EquipBoard?

For example:

Studio furniture and acoustics: "insert here"

Hardware gear: "Insert here"

Software: "Insert here"

I find that very useful if you for example have added loads of stuff on your board, lets say mostly software plugins etc, then suddenly some studio furniture appears on top of your board and you have to move it down manually. I usually put those items in the "i want" list, then back on the "i have" list since that'll bring it all the way down on my board list faster.

It's kinda annoying xD

This is a feature :) The only peopl eusing software would be people working on the mixing of the music, IE a producer. If you select producer on the artist, it adds a section for that.

If someone is wanting to just train in noodling/blues solo/rock solo, I would say to look for economical picking methods, tremolo picking, and learning a few different scales.

I use to not really care between active/passive. I am now addimantly against passive. If it's a feature I can switch on and off, great. If it's only passive I wont buy it.

My Ibanez 305DX made this decision for me. It was my first active bass and the pickups allowed me to get so much richer and brighter tones than my other basses. It's enough to make me not buy a bass.

I really want a Warick $$ because of all the licensed features (the 3D bridge, the Adjust-a-nut, etc) but only the high end German made ones use Active Electronics and pups. I don't want to spend thousands on an instrument unless I am well familiar with the feel of the company's product and feel. I've not ever played a Warwick before so it's a RockBass or bust.

I tend to agree with the instruments made after the 90's. I also prefer the older woods, better materials, and hand made qualities of the older stuff. Once a product because a factory squirting out clone after clone with machines, the quality drops. 80's Ibanez guitars are sought after, 90's+ are not.

How do I get better from here?

It depends on what you are looking for. To know about techniques you are unaware of, you would need to come across them.

For example, you may be into Metal and want to learn how to play Cemetary Gates by Pantera. You can find a few good channels where they walk you through, explain the process, and post tablature on screen while they go through the notes. In the process, they will mention "You need to do a pinch harmonic on the 3rd fret of A and Divebomb the rest of the note."

From here, you could ask "What is a pinch harmonic?". You'd likely have to look up a video on how to pinch harmonic and then another to learn how Dimebag divebombs.

YouTube is a great resource, but it's so large you need to have a specific thing you are looking for. Even if someone said "I want to learn just the basics of guitar". You could find 1000 videos on just that, but the videos that are going to be the most useful to you are the ones that play the music you want to play and discuss the techniques those genres use in detail.

This thread has made me decide to post in the "Whatever you like" thread :)

What do you think about your new forum flair? :-D

Well, this is my thinking.

TalkBass is pretty much the number 1 source for bass guitar and upright bass knowledge. More than anything else, it's success is due to the huge numbers of members. They come from all walks of life and backgrounds which allows for a wide base of knowledge. Someone can post a headstock they found in an attic with no logo and no tuners and someone will identify what brand and year it was. It's scary. Talkbass does what google don't.

The more members we have and the more reason for them to stick around, the greater our resources become. A member who joined last year may have listed everything he knows about his favorite musicians already. If he decides there's nothing to add or gain from sticking around, we lose his knowledge.

I HAD to take some Latin every year in jr high, it was part of the program I was in (just like I had to study logic, taxonomy, ontology, etc to stay in gifted class in primary school) so it barely crossed my mind at the time that it was a weird thing to do.

HA, our public schools don't even bother with such things as "taxonomy" or "logic". If they did, maybe our new workforce might have some better skills, eh?

Even so, would we have careers available for them?

To discuss why Marcus Aurelius' father is described as having "manliness and integrity", even though he left his son at an early age?

Sounds like a public school system idea :)

Though I typically find any music without instruments as not real music, I do dig some of this genre. Where the artists fails with ability to play an instrument, they still have a shot at writing interesting vocals arrangements. This song by Gnarles Barkley I think demonstrates this. His voice and his vocal timing really sell the song for me.

What do you think about your new forum flair? :-D

I do not like it. For me, it's the last 3 items I've added and I think it's kind of distracting. Typically I check out peoples' gear pages when I first see them post. I liked that we had just our names and avatars over there. So many other forums post junk under the avatar. They give special titles to members for different reasons, where they are from, how old they are, a quote, yadda yadda yadda.

I like all the other upgrades to the site like the articles set to the top of the activity page, but this particular addition just seems in the way to me.

The worth of an item is whatever someone's willing to pay for it but this can be controlled. There have been companies that continually offer the same item for the same price whether or not it's sold out. This keeps the interest on the item up and the price down. Fender has my respect for doing this with the SWR gear. They purchased the company that was already sought after, repackaged their new Rumble Combo V3 with the SWR circuits, and kept the price down. In Wal's case, they were out of business and had no control over the prices as they were all used. Always gets my gruff though when people collectively make bad decisions and allow inflation like this. We as buyers have the power to hold back on purchases and force the price of gear to go down but there are far too many people who think selfishly or simply don't know any better and pay whatever is asked.

Fender has

Guitar companies that refuse to come up with new body designs. There's only so many variations on the figure 8 shape we can make. It's time to make some new bodies.

Collectors who are willing to pay way more for an instrument than it's worth. Wal's and Alembic's used to be 3,000 brand new. That's what US Citizens paid after the shipping from the UK and hand crafted basses. When Wal went under, they went through the roof in value. Most go for $9,000 USED! That's just stupid. For less than $3000, you could just pay a luthier to make a body and neck to the specifications of a Wal, drop in an ACG preamp, and buy some mudbuckers with exposed poles. Done. You would have a Wal clone. That's of course if you feel you NEED an exact Wal sounding/looking bass. You could make your own design all the way around for $2000 or less. TOOL fanboys are partly to blame for this rise in price as well. You get a beginner bass player with money in his pocket who loves TOOL and you have the perfect storm of ignorance on the issue. They will believe that the only way to obtain the TOOL sound is with a Wal. You have to have one. If TOOL is the only band they really practice playing, they will spend whatever it takes to get that Wal. It's disgusting. There are other famous Wal users out there. Geddy Lee, Paul McCartney, John Entwhistle are some of the biggest names but none of them bring in the devout zealots to the Wal system more than Justin Chancellor. He's not even that amazing of a bass player.

That's how I listen to classical. You can do the same thing with it but you have to break down each instrument's section. Listen to just the trumpets or just the bass strings. Pachabels Canon has a super lame bass line, so I just pay attention to the violins.

DEADPOOL - Red Band Trailer

I enjoyed Super. The Lantern series is my all time favorite in comics and the last time I watched the film, there were a lot of things that bothered me. It wasn't the worst though. I'd rather watch Green Lantern again than Green Hornet or Ghost Rider.

Never seen one you didnt like eh? :) How about Batman and Robin. Shoemaker batmans are depressingly bad. I've seen prisoners see that it's on TV and decide to go back in their cell and read.

DC Versus Marvel

If we weren't all nerds, we wouldn't be musicians. We would instead be pretending we have an rap album coming out or singing off key country karaoke in bars.

I dig over analysis. I have always been entertained by it. I remember once my childhood best friend and I were locked out of our third friends' ranch. We were cold, wide awake, and bored as all get it. We passed the time with questions like "What would be scarier to have spawn in town? Nemesis from Resident Evil 3 or a pack of raptors from Jurassic Park?"

When I was a kid, I wasn't so much into Marvel as much as I was just into the X-Men. Started with Cartoons on Fox and worked from there. Like you said though, Keaton's Batman made an impression. When I was 4, my babysitters were Predator, Batman, Star Wars, Running Man, Total Recall, and Nightmare on Elm Street. Batman and Predator were the first movie characters I pretended to be around the house and when playing near the creek outside.

I never saw a marvel character until like Second grade. To this day I could watch the X-men cartoons but I cant say the same for the Iron Man or Spider-man cartoons. They just didn't grab me.

I'm also reminded that the video games in the arcades were more grabbing for Marvel than DC. The X-Men arcade was so loud and awesome. The Avengers.... not so much.

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5085/5259266818_f8c98b1a63.jpg Interesting side note: Did anyone else ever hear the rumor that the X-Men comics were about the world's views on homosexuality?

DEADPOOL - Red Band Trailer

Actually, Deadpool is a 20th Century Fox film. Disney doesn't own the rights to Deadpool because he's considered a mutant. Though Disney and Fox are collaborating contractually to bring Spider-man and perhaps Wolverine to the Avengers, it is not the norm just yet. That's why the Deadpool trailer showed a couple of the X-Men in it.

I had vowed I would not watch another Marvel film after I saw Guardians of the Galaxy. The only thing that allowed me to reconsider is what I feel is Marvel's greatest project so far, Netflix's Daredevil series. I watched the show and felt that Marvel could really change gears based on how the show was written and filmed. I would love to see Thanos kill Iron Man, Cyclops, Vision, and Thor but the only way I think I would enjoy it is if it were done more like Daredevil and Amazing Spider-Man 2 and less like Toby McGuire Spider-man and the first Avengers.

Many consider one of Deadpool's funniest series' was when he was with Spider-Man all the time. Those two were a joke a bubble.

I like the both companies having to step up their games to compete with each other, but I would rather have Disney just buy all the rights to all prior Marvel content and finally start getting the universe merged.

There's still music of every genre being made today. Classical composition, Blues, even throat singing.

If you enjoy a genre that is not highlighted for it's cultural persuasion or underlining values, you will have to turn off the tv and radio to have a chance of hearing it.
