Elixir Strings is a string manufacturer owned by W. L. Gore & Associates, the American materials science company best known for Gore-Tex fabric. Based in Elkton, Maryland, the brand emerged in 1997 from Gore's fluoropolymer research — engineers working on push-pull cable coatings discovered their technology could dramatically extend the life of guitar strings by preventing the buildup of dirt, sweat, and skin oils between the windings. The result was the first commercially successful coated string, and Elixir quickly became one of the most widely used string brands in the world.
Elixir offers strings for acoustic guitar, electric guitar, and bass guitar, each available with different proprietary coating options. POLYWEB, the original coating, delivers a warm, smooth feel and the longest lifespan. NANOWEB provides a brighter, more traditional tone with an ultra-thin coating that's barely perceptible. OPTIWEB, available for electric guitar strings, uses the thinnest coating of the three, designed to replicate the natural feel and crisp attack of uncoated strings while still offering extended tone life. All three coatings share the same core anti-corrosion technology that protects the entire string surface.
The brand's roster of endorsed artists spans genres and instruments, including Eric Church, Marcus King, Wayne Sermon of Imagine Dragons, Kaki King, Newton Faulkner, Richard Thompson, Phil Keaggy, bassist Hadrien Feraud, and John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin fame. Elixir strings are manufactured exclusively in the United States.
Elixir has 78 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Strings and Mandolin Accessories. Their gear is featured by 55 artists, with the strongest followings in Rock, Metal, and Pop. Notable users include Jeremy Asbrock, Masaru Teramae, and Miles Dimitri Baker.
