Hallmark Guitars is an American electric guitar maker known for the Swept-Wing, an angular-bodied instrument whose silhouette was inspired by a rough sketch from Bob Bogle of The Ventures. The original company was founded in 1966 by former Mosrite employee Joe Hall, who was joined by fellow Mosrite luthier Bill Gruggett. During its brief original run, Hallmark produced semi-solid, solid-body, 12-string, and double-neck versions of the Swept-Wing before the company closed in 1968.
The brand was revived in the late 1990s by Maryland-based luthier Bob Shade, who acquired the rights from Joe Hall and resumed production out of his own shop. The modern lineup centers on faithful reissues of the Swept-Wing alongside Mosrite-influenced offset models such as the 60 Custom, with both custom-built and mass-produced versions available. Hallmark has also released artist signature instruments, including the Man or Astro-man? Star Crunch model.
Vintage Hallmark guitars were placed with a number of 1960s artists including members of The Doors, The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, The Mamas and the Papas, and The Association, and the company continues to build connections with players drawn to its distinctive retro-modern designs.
