Heet Sound Products is a Los Angeles-based company founded by guitarist and inventor Greg Heet. The company is the creator of the EBow (Energy Bow), a handheld electronic device for guitar that uses a pickup and magnetic feedback circuit to vibrate strings without physical contact, producing infinite sustain rich in harmonics. The EBow was first conceived in 1969 and publicly introduced at the 1976 NAMM show in Chicago, where Jerry Garcia became the very first customer, purchasing three units.
The EBow has gone through several iterations over the decades. Early versions featured automatic on/off activation and chrome plating, which were eventually replaced by self-lubricating plastic housings and manual switching for improved reliability. The EBow Plus, introduced in 1998, added a harmonic mode that sounds one octave higher, along with a blue LED indicator. Powered by a nine-volt battery, the device replaces the pick in the player's right hand and enables guitarists to mimic the tonal qualities of strings, horns, woodwinds, and other instruments through direct string synthesis.
The EBow has been adopted by a wide range of prominent artists, including The Edge of U2 (notably on The Unforgettable Fire), R.E.M. (who named the song "E-Bow the Letter" after it), Radiohead, Big Country, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Van Halen, Metallica, Foo Fighters, David Bowie, and Queen.
