Klemt Echolette traces back to Radio Klemt, a radio and television sales and repair business founded in the 1930s by Arthur Klemt in Olching, near Munich. In the mid-1950s, orchestra musician Hans Bauer began building vocal and instrument amplifiers for the company, and in 1959 the Echolette trademark was established for its line of amplifiers and effects. As the surf and instrumental boom of the early 1960s took hold, the catalog expanded to include tape echoes, guitars, loudspeakers, reverb units, and microphones.

The brand is best known for its tube-driven tape echo units, particularly the Echolette NG51 (the "golden box") and the earlier Echolette 5, which are prized for their warm, musical repeats and distinctive German-built character. Guitar and bass amplifiers such as the M40, M100, M150, and the Showstar S40, along with the E51 preamp/tape echo, rounded out the tube-era lineup. The Beatles were photographed using an Echolette NG51 during their Hamburg residencies, which cemented the unit's place in rock and roll history.

Dynacord acquired Echolette in 1969 and eventually folded the products into its own line. The Echolette name was later revived in Germany in partnership with Thomann, which produces a modern guitar amplifier, the Echolette MK I, designed and assembled in Germany and aimed at players seeking tube-driven tone inspired by the original Echolette ethos.
