Critic Reviews

Mutable Instruments Shruthi 1

soundonsound.com

The Mutable Instruments Shruthi-1 is a budget-friendly, hybrid monophonic synth module that offers the best of both analogue and digital worlds for DIY enthusiasts. With its versatile digital oscillators and a rich modulation matrix, it provides an expansive sound palette, from gritty waveforms to classic analogue warmth. Its affordability and sound-shaping capabilities are impressive, though it requires soldering skills to assemble. The acrylic case is cost-effective but less durable for live gigs. Overall, it's a superbly versatile synth for those willing to put in the assembly effort, offering a rewarding hands-on experience.

Remarkable little box

I feel fortunate to have gotten one of these while they were still available. There were several filter options and I opted for the SMR4 MKII build. It comes with 2 envelopes, 2 LFOs and 12 modulation matrix possibilities which offer an incredible amount of depth to this module. This is useful when you start getting into the oscillator waveforms, which are not limited to VA kind of sounds. It is most definitely a hybrid analog/digital synth and it sounds it. It most closely resembles the DSI monoevolver in sound and in many cases has a much wider sweet spot.

Better than some synths costing 10x more

It's sort of like a DSI Tetra and Gotharman's Little DeFormer in one device. Formant, wavetable, bit crushing, wild sounds aplenty in the Shuthri synthesizer.
