Founded by Dieter Döpfer in Gräfelfing, Germany, Doepfer Musikelektronik GmbH is a pioneering manufacturer of electronic musical instruments. Dieter began developing audio hardware in 1977 with a voltage-controlled phaser module, and the company was formally established in 1992. Doepfer is best known for creating the Eurorack modular format — a 3U-tall, horizontally racked module standard introduced alongside the A-100 analog modular synthesizer system in 1995. What launched with just 10 module types has grown to over 120 modules spanning oscillators, filters, sequencers, VCAs, clock dividers, and MIDI-to-CV interfaces. The Eurorack format has since been adopted by hundreds of other manufacturers worldwide, making Doepfer one of the most consequential companies in the history of modular synthesis.

Beyond the A-100 system, Doepfer produces standalone instruments and controllers including the Dark Energy desktop monophonic analog synthesizer series, the Dark Time analog sequencer, the MS-404 monophonic MIDI synthesizer, and a range of MIDI master keyboards and hardware sequencers. The company's MAQ16/3 MIDI analog sequencer, released in 1992, was designed in cooperation with Kraftwerk, who also use Doepfer's MMK2 MIDI keyboard in live performances.
