Founded in 1997 by luthier and guitar technician Joe Naylor in a garage behind a bicycle shop in East Detroit, Michigan, Reverend has grown into one of the most respected independent electric guitar and bass brands in the United States. Naylor, a graduate of the Roberto-Venn School of Luthiery, originally built instruments from unconventional materials — solid mahogany cores surrounded by acoustic chambers with phenolic laminate tops — before the company transitioned to more traditional wood construction manufactured in South Korea. Every instrument is inspected and set up at the company's headquarters in the Toledo, Ohio area.
Reverend guitars are distinguished by their retro-inspired yet original designs, proprietary Railhammer pickups, and the signature Bass Contour Control (BCC) knob, which gives players more nuanced tonal shaping than conventional tone controls. The lineup spans a wide range of solidbody and semi-hollow electrics — including the Charger, Buckshot, Jetstream, Double Agent, Sensei, and Descent baritone — as well as electric basses like the Dub King and Decision models. Signature models have been developed with artists such as Billy Corgan of The Smashing Pumpkins, Reeves Gabrels of The Cure, Mike Watt of the Minutemen, Pete Anderson, Rick Vito, and Greg Koch. The brand has built a loyal following across genres from punk and indie rock to country and heavy metal, with endorsers including members of Mastodon, Shinedown, Fu Manchu, Drive-By Truckers, Hot Mulligan, and Mitski.
Reverend has 191 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Solid Body Electric Guitars, Electric Basses, and Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitars. Their gear is featured by 124 artists, with the strongest followings in Rock, Folk, World, & Country, and Pop. Notable users include Reeves Gabrels, Billy Corgan, and Emily Green. Most Reverend products sit firmly in the high-end, boutique range.
