Rivera Amplification is an American guitar amplifier manufacturer founded by Paul Rivera in Southern California. Paul Rivera began his career repairing and modifying amplifiers in New York City before relocating to California in 1972, founding Rivera R&D in 1976. During the early 1980s he worked at Fender, where he designed amps including the Super Champ, Concert, and Twin Reverb II, before leaving to establish his own company in 1985 to compete in the hot-rodded, multi-channel amplifier market then dominated by Mesa/Boogie.
The company builds hand-made tube amplifier heads, combos, and cabinets in the USA, with product families including the flagship Knucklehead and Venus series, the Suprema and Sedona acoustic amp, the S-series stereo combos, and the more affordable Pubster and Clubster lines. Rivera also produces effects pedals, attenuators, cabinet simulators, and the Rockcrusher/Rockrec line of load boxes and reactive attenuators, as well as the RockRec recording direct box.
Rivera is closely associated with the boutique amplifier movement that emerged in the 1980s alongside builders like Soldano and Bogner. In addition to his own product line, Paul Rivera has long been known for modifying Marshall amps for high-profile players, and the company's amps have been associated with session and touring guitarists including members of Toto and Lee Ritenour.
Rivera has 50 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Combo Guitar Amplifiers, Guitar Amplifier Heads, and Guitar Amplifier Cabinets. Their gear is featured by 47 artists, with the strongest followings in Rock, Metal, and Electronic. Notable users include Mick Thomson, David Rhodes, and Stephen Carpenter. Most Rivera products sit firmly in the high-end, boutique range.
