Hiwatt is a British amplifier manufacturer founded by Dave Reeves in the mid-1960s. Reeves registered his Hylight company in September 1966 and began building amplifiers from his garage in New Malden, Surrey before moving to a dedicated facility. His design philosophy centered on headroom, efficiency, and clean power rather than early breakup, employing military-specification construction methods and premium Partridge transformers. The result was a line of amplifiers widely regarded as among the most rugged and reliable ever made, with a noise floor and resistance to radio-frequency interference that set them apart from their contemporaries.
The flagship DR103 Custom 100 became the company's best-selling model and one of the most iconic amplifiers in rock history. Hiwatt also produced the DR504 (50-watt) and higher-powered models including the DR201 and DR405, developed to meet the demands of large-scale touring. The amplifiers are known for their exceptional headroom that holds together at volumes where other amps compress or distort, and for a characteristic clean British tone that became foundational to rock live sound. Production today continues in the UK with hand-wired construction following Reeves' original specifications.
Hiwatt's user base is closely associated with the classic rock era: David Gilmour made Hiwatt heads central to Pink Floyd's live sound, Pete Townshend of The Who drove his stage performances through walls of them, and Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, and The Rolling Stones all used the brand's amplifiers. Dave Reeves died in 1981 and the brand passed through several ownership changes before being revived as an active manufacturer.
