Serge Modular is an analog modular synthesizer system originally developed in late 1972 by composer Serge Tcherepnin with Rich Gold and Randy Cohen at CalArts. Conceived as an affordable alternative to the era's expensive modular systems, the first units — initially called "Tcherepnins" and later dubbed "The People's Synthesizer" — were assembled in Tcherepnin's home in 1973. The design is closely associated with the West Coast school of synthesis alongside Don Buchla, emphasizing patch-programmable modules, banana-jack connections, and distinctive "paperface" panels that keep multiple stages of a circuit exposed for creative patching.

The system is known for its flexibility, with modules that blur the boundaries between oscillators, filters, and function generators — letting a single module serve as an LFO, envelope, slew limiter, or audio-rate oscillator depending on the patch. After the original Serge Modular Music Systems company wound down production in 1986, Tcherepnin licensed the designs non-exclusively to several builders, including Sound Transform Systems in the U.S., Elby Designs in Australia, The Human Comparator in Sweden, Loudest Warning in the U.K., and Random*Source in Germany, which now produces Serge modules in both the traditional 4U panel format and Eurorack (3U).

Serge systems have been used by artists including John Adams, Roger Powell, Malcolm Cecil, Gary Chang, Jim O'Rourke, Sarah Davachi, and Richie Hawtin. Signature configurations and panels include "The Mighty Serge," the Animal, Blue Voice, and Red Fun Station, along with the 50th-anniversary Paperface system.
