Reviews

PROS

  • Unique sequencer with a refreshing approach to sequences

  • Regular updates keep it relevant years after release

  • Allows for experimentation with clocks at different tempos

  • Capable of triggering with gate rates up to several kilohertz, doubling as a waveshaper

  • 16 values controlled by knobs, navigated by 10 sequencers for versatile sequencing

  • Each sequencer can be individually clocked, reversed, and reset

  • Offers a real plus to musical creativity

CONS

  • User interface could be clearer, especially for beginners

  • Outputs +10V may require attenuation and quantization for musical use

Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Tiptop Audio Z8000 Matrix Sequencer.

Features and functionality

  • The Z8000 Matrix Sequencer outputs non-quantized voltages, requiring an additional quantizer like the Intellijel uScale to convert those into musical notes.

    Source
  • The Z8000 provides ten sequencers in one, allowing for complex, orthogonal movements that can enhance modular synthesis.

    Source
  • The Z8000 works well with modules generating triggers and clock dividers, like Pam's Workout, to create non-repeating patterns through direction and reset jacks.

    Source
  • The Z8000 can sequence up to an 8-chord progression when carefully selecting pitches and sequencing each track, providing a robust compositional tool.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The Z8000 is best viewed as a modulation sequencer rather than a pitch sequencer, lacking direct facilities for triggers or gates.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • It’s recommended to pair the Z8000 with a quantizer module such as the Intellijel uScale for user-friendly functionality within a Western music scale.

    Source
  • The Doepfer A-150-8 octal switch can be self-patched for inventive sequencing, enhancing the Z8000's modular capabilities.

    Source

User experience

  • The Z8000 Matrix Sequencer appeals to those who prefer intuitive, knob-driven melody creation over methodical programming, offering a more hands-on approach to sequencing.

    Source
  • Owners suggest employing logic modules like Intellijel Plog or Klavis Two Bits with the Z8000 to add variety and interest to sequences.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Mixing slower and faster sequencer outputs on the Z8000 can generate complex modulation patterns, ideal for evolving soundscapes.

    Source
  • For voltage-controlled octave transposition, using a Disting module with the A-1 Precision Adder algorithm is effective, although considered overkill by some users.

I wouldn’t say random, Just longer phrasing probability. More specifically because of the amount of notes in the sequence (5 triggers across a 16 step note sequencer – Tiptop Circadian Rhythms and Z8000) and durations of those notes in the lead line, that lead melody would start and end at different points of the chord sequence which is a sequence of 8 at a different division. I do this a lot actually. Can create an interesting feel.
