Founded in 1975 by Michael Laiacona in Rochester, New York, Whirlwind manufactures professional audio interfacing products, cables, and power distribution equipment for the live sound, broadcast, and installation markets. Laiacona, who previously co-founded effects pedal maker MXR, started Whirlwind after witnessing touring musicians and crews struggling to build reliable cable connections on the road. The company began with guitar cables and grew into one of the most comprehensive pro audio connectivity brands in the industry, employing over 130 people at its Rochester factory.
Whirlwind is best known for its Medusa Series audio snakes, which have been a touring standard worldwide for decades, and the IMP 2, a rugged passive DI box found on stages and in studios everywhere. The product line extends to microphone and instrument cables, splitters, press boxes, the pcDI and DIRECTOR direct boxes, the qBox cable tester, AC power distribution systems, fiber optic audio solutions, and the e-Snake digital audio networking system, which received TEC Award nominations for Outstanding Technical Achievement. The company also operates a custom shop for bespoke multi-channel wiring systems and panel builds.
Whirlwind's client list spans major touring acts — including Bruce Springsteen, the Rolling Stones, Cheap Trick, and Tedeschi Trucks Band — as well as high-profile installations at venues like Yankee Stadium, AT&T Stadium, Disney World, the White House, and NASA facilities. The company's products are designed to be intentionally overbuilt for the demands of nightly touring and permanent installations alike.
