Favorite Instrumment You've Ever Touched?
I'm kind of ashamed to say that mine is a Squier Jag bass. A close runner up is the Fender Duosonic HS, and in third place is the Squier J. Mascis JM.
If I were to rround out a top 5, I'd put the Ibanez SRX400 in fourth and the Fender American Elite Jazz Bass in 5th, just because I felt like the neck was far too thick.

thnx jim. i think the marshall emulator on the one I use (a native one) is pretty good. short of an actual marshall, I don't know if there are better. ill look into your recommendations.

How do you feel about using amp plugins to record? Which is your favorite? I like the Komplete Guitar Rig Player 5.
9yabout 9 years ago
well lucky you. i had KFC for dinner and my lead guitarist is passed out on my couch. he smells like jack daniels.
9yabout 9 years ago
yes it's torture! all i want is some goddamn decent gear and the lowest-priced Marshall tube we could find was $600, and then we went to look at a Boogie, but forget about that.
9yabout 9 years ago
yes. i used the tube at my rich friend's house. we record with tube amp emulators and play live with our solid states. we're saving for a marshall 800 right now.
9yabout 9 years ago
yes, for my purposes it usually is a brighter guitar. blues, lighter punk, etc. for my Black Flag shit we (my band) run solid-states with pedals.
9yabout 9 years ago
i dunno, if you run a naturally bright guitar through it, it sounds brighter.

cool!! amps are fun. my favorite "crunch" amp is an orange for sure.

New Equipboard Categorization - FAQ & Feedback
yeah but it asks you to drag them in the order you like them. for example, i want basses first but in the default order they go after my amps and pedals.

New Equipboard Categorization - FAQ & Feedback
i can, and it won't let me drag the categories.

I need a tip for buying a new guitar
i actually agree with indieman here. the strat has always sounded thicker to me, fuller in tone and less twangy. Not lacking twang, but less than the Tele. i really dislike Teles, as I find them uncomfortable, but when I need a country ass tone or some blues shit you will find me asking the tallest GC guy to please help me reach that Thinline up there.

How often to set-up and restring?
thanks for the paragraph jim! helpful as always.
i will NOT leave my strings on for 17 years, but I do have a question about restringing to a heavier gauge.
- I'll need to refine the nut, won't I?
- What gauge should I use for (absolute lowest) Drop B?

Your favorite albums released this year
DUMB BLOOD by VANT, and there are probably others I'm forgetting. I feel like this year is gonna be lackluster, but last year was a great year.

How often to set-up and restring?
on my 34" ibanez, i have some Ernie Ball Super Slinkys (I forget the gauge).
on my 30" squier, i have stock strings on. i was thinking about ghx bass boomers, as they've got the gauge i'm looking for, or maybe a DR set.

How often to set-up and restring?
I've not done it in a year and a half for one, and I got the other four months ago, so it should be fine. What do you think is the best time to restring?
EDIT: For bass, though guitar info is always welcome.

What were some guitars you played that disappointed you?
fairly certain you're right, but the casino might be a 330 copy.

What were some guitars you played that disappointed you?
not comparing.
i do think some of them are (almost) equal but not really.

What were some guitars you played that disappointed you?
Hm. That is true, I hate high actions in general. Very, very low action is very, very good for me.
that said, there was this one Epiphone.
it was a mess. a Epi Les Paul Studio on the lowest rack at a Guitar Center. the first three frets and the entire second half of the fretboard was dead. The E string broke when I played it.
i was upset.

What were some guitars you played that disappointed you?
that said, I dislike Gibbys nd Epis. I think they have too high actions from the factory.

What were some guitars you played that disappointed you?
Definitely NOT a Gibson/Epi, then. I only play higher end Epis and I haven't found a quality issue yet. A couple Fenders have been damaged in store by the fucking metal gang who like to bash the Fenders so no one can enjoy them while they break the glass doors by playing a Jackson Rhoads into a Marshall at full voume and gain.
