Daft Punk's Behringer Compressor: Let's Finish This.

New observations:

  • The width of the numbers in the squares is greater for the MDX2100. It's especially noticeable for the 2nd channel's "2".
  • The "Auto" button on the MDX2100 has an "In Out" graphic that the MDX2000 lacks.
  • The "Release" scale on the MDX2000 goes from 0.05 to 0.08, while the "Release" scale on the MDX2100 goes from 0.05 to 0.1.

Daft Punk's Behringer Compressor: Let's Finish This.

It never said anything about a master bus. And how do we know it's not the Alesis 3630 being referred to as the "Dynamic Gain Reduction"?

"this is a device called an 'enhancer' used to specify and energize the contour of the sound spectrum in the extreme low and the extreme high. in principle, this device is connected in stereo output"

Is that mastering specific? Couldn't that still be used in a mixing setting?

We just need to determine whether or not the bit of white in Exhibit A is that dot or glare.

Self-Correction: There is glare. It's now a matter of scrutiny.

Daft Punk's Behringer Compressor: Let's Finish This.

Both the 2000 and the 2100 have enhancers. The 2100 has a refined one.

I do not remember mine having that, I need to find it, it might be in my storage unit, its not in my house that I can suss out... its possible I sold it or gave it away and forgot. I also could swear mine said it was an optical comrpessor, there was this time when vactrols got small and cheap so you would find things like half rack joe meeks and the composer that have the opto detector in a modern design then.... that's also the era of the VLA.... instead of having that photo cell that plugs into a socket like a tube like all the urei designs the thing could be pcb mounted, I think the LA22 is like that and the LA4 might be too. It was a late 80s thing into the 90s, I guess its normal now too, but a lot of companies are straight copying the older method which is enat because switching vactrols changes your time cosntants. Acme optocom uses this idea, its got 2 photo cells, a vintage one and a modded one and that's the fast slow switch. I kinda want one of those.

but that's not really the conversation here, I'm no longer sure its a 2000 because they mention putting it on the master bus and if its barely limiting and being used mroe for the enhancer then the ducking problems would not be a big deal. But a bad link mode on your master would really suck if you had panning stuff going on etc.... Iw ould think they woulda had the 2100 for stereo linked master bus compression. Or maybe they went unlinked, I don't usually do that on my master personally, it can make the stereo image wonky, better to do that on stere osignals or sub groups.

It never said anything about a master bus. And how do we know it's not the Alesis 3630 being referred to as the "Dynamic Gain Reduction"?

Here are photos of each compressor. This MDX2000 image comes from this Reverb.com listing and this MDX2100 image comes from Behringer's website. Both have an Expander/Gate.

Wait a minute, there's a visual difference! There's a white dot on the MDX2100's power button that the MDX2000 lacks! We just need to determine whether or not the bit of white in Exhibit A is that dot or glare.

Daft Punk's Behringer Compressor: Let's Finish This.

I Google-translated the full paragraph for the "Behringer Composer" from Exhibit A, and it sounds like they may be describing a different type of exciter/enhancer.

"this is a device called an 'enhancer' used to specify and energize the contour of the sound spectrum in the extreme low and the extreme high. in principle, this device is connected in stereo output"

that argues the new Pro which didn't exist yet... the new one has an enhancer circuit I think, though who knows if it does anything in reality. Uli loves tacking pointless features onto things. Perhaps the 2100 had the enhancer, I have stuff to do, someone read both manuals... or maybe the translation is fine but the interviewer messed up. Journalists can be quite ignorant you know.

Both the 2000 and the 2100 have enhancers. The 2100 has a refined one.

Daft Punk's Behringer Compressor: Let's Finish This.

Two things to consider: 1) perhaps the 2.1 2000 manual is a missing link. The 2100 is just a play on 2000 2.1. In other words, they might have been branded as the same compressor once?! 😅 However, 2) Something's catching my attention in Exhibit A now: "En principe, cet appareil est connectĂ© en sortie stĂ©rĂ©o." "En principe" translates to "in principle" or "in theory". If this is a correct understanding of the magazine's use of the phrase, is this an acknowledgement of false stereo, thus proving the MDX2000?

Daft Punk's Behringer Compressor: Let's Finish This.

"In fact, the MDX 2000 is rather better at dual mono operation since there is a documented but rarely mentioned bug in its stereo link implementation. The problem is that the left channel truly is the master channel, not only for the controls but also for the internal sidechain. In other words, the right-channel signal doesn't affect the compression at all, which is a serious oversight that can be downright dangerous under unpredictable circumstances. You could be having deafening amounts of feedback on the right channel but as long as the left channel wasn't affected, the MDX 2000 wouldn't act upon it. The only way to get around this is to sacrifice an aux send to do a mix of both channels and use it as the external sidechain control, which is obviously a bit of a bummer."

"The MDX 2100 isn't without design flaws, either. For some reason, its headroom is significantly lower than the MDX 2000's, which means that even with the limiter turned off completely, it will use the compression circuit to auto-limit the incoming signal. There is no way to prevent this, not even with switching to external keying, which should in theory completely divorce the program from the control path. I tested this when I was trying to use the MDX 2100 as a bass ducker to make some room for the kick, but instead, it began to compress the bass. When I switched back to the MDX 2000, the problem was gone (and yes, I checked the -10/+4 input setting)."

"The feature speaking strongest in favour of the Behringer Composer today is the price. They rarely sell for over 50 Euros, and if you know what you're getting them for, you can't really do much better than that. The old Composers can definitely match the Samsons, the Phonics, the Alesis 3630, and Behringer's own later offerings, and even surpass them in certain regards, such as transparency."

If the MDX2100 has a design flaw that compromises it's ability to duck a bass to make room for a kick drum... then I'm leaning MDX2000 too.

Great find! Reading the 2.1 2100 manual, it seems that the expander was changed and made independent and a true stereo configuration was added.

Jim, your deep knowledge on dynamics processing, and your usual generosity in helping me with this crazy quest is essential and much appreciated as well.

thanks but I'm no match for the Holtz Effect, this guy's an internet deep dive monster.... he gets deep and slays the kraken of something or other, my metaphor is falling apart.

All I'm doing is keyword searching in Google. Quotation marks for the words you want specified, minus for the ones you want omitted.

Daft Punk's Behringer Compressor: Let's Finish This.

Here’s my current verdict: since Daft Punk did not officially become Daft Punk until 1993 and the MDX2000 seems to have been phased out by then, it’s most likely the MDX2100. The bottom right photo in Exhibit A is dated 1996 and Exhibit B is dated 1999.

1992

COMPOSER MDX2000

The best selling compressor ever, from that time all 19" units had the new enclosure design and were Made in China, more COMPOSER models will follow. Being a visionary and entrepreneur, Uli Behringer investigated and discovered many of the large-scale electronics manufacturers had invested in automation, which yielded lower operational costs and provided for mass production. The MDX2000 COMPOSER, another milestone in Behringer’s goal to bridge the gap between pro audio and consumer electronics, was the first product designed for large scale production in China. With several successor models to follow, the COMPOSER quickly became the best selling compressor of all time.

okay great but where's my history of the composer line? every model and everything you can find on them, there may be more than 3 variants! I know you can do it even though behringer doesn't have a legacy product page I can find on their site. You're a lord of googling gear. GO!

When i'm done this monotonous dirge of a jam by a hardcore punk band that shouldn't play at less than 130bpm I'll be back and looking for it

Daft Punk's Behringer Compressor: Let's Finish This.

What intrigues me most is the Gearslutz claim. How does he know it was used on the drum bus?

he doesn't, people just mouth off like crazy there, that's why I quit! the disinformation based on people's guesswork or magic ears is worse than the constant flame wars

His last post was a week ago apparently. Here is what he says about why he quit.

Daft Punk's Behringer Compressor: Let's Finish This.

Okay, I’m joining in on this. So far I’ve found a guy on oldschooldaw.com who’s claiming it’s the MDX2000.

Reading Exhibit A, we get the following info:

Behringer Composer: il s’agit d’un appareil appellĂ© “Enhancer”, utilisĂ© pour prĂ©ciser te dynamiser le contour du spectre sonore: les extrĂšmes graves et les extrĂšmes aigues. En principe, cet appareil est connectĂ© en sortie stĂ©rĂ©o.

As we know, the enhancer function, the stereo capacity and the Composer name means it’s definitely an MDX. The lack of “Pro” evinces 2000 and 2100.

This Tumblr post dates the photo in Exhibit A to June 29, 1996, so live performances around that time might offer a better glimpse. Here’s a start, even though the glimpse we get doesn’t include a Behringer Composer. Same here.

There’s also this 1997 email sent to Analogue Heaven that gives an eyewitness report of some equipment. It matches pretty well with Exhibit A:

No identifiable synths. They had with' em two 909's and something of which I think was a studio 440.

Last time I saw them their setup was : 909, 808, linndrum, juno-106, tb-303, se-1, roland s770 sampler, mackie 1402, a few effects (guitar pedals, behringer composer, dp4, equalizer), waldorf 4pole filter.

What intrigues me most is the Gearslutz claim. How does he know it was used on the drum bus? There might be an article out there describing that, unless he’s just going off of a rumor. Maybe it’s one of these if someone can find them? These might also be helpful.

Artists of Equipboard, we want to hear your music

Thanks. I sent you a copy of our latest CD.

Thank you! What is it called?

5yover 5 years ago

New feature! Introducing community gear recommendations

like, Eyesee, god bless his little neurologist heart, put the boutique JU06 as a newer version of the juno6, 60, 106.... and its not, its an emulation of something awesome that hasn't been made in years.... I think I deleted that, sorry to Tom, lvoe ya guy, but that's not a juno, its a little DSP engine, its its own thing and its valid as a tiny portable subtractive synth. I'll bet it makes a lot of people happy but I played one and NAWWWWWWW

XD

I'm just a neuroscience major, not a neurologist.

OK, thanks for confirming.

I confirmed all of your spots, as they were all correct & impressively complete.

Artists of Equipboard, we want to hear your music

There are two options. First is to tune in live via this stream. My show airs every Wednesday at 8:00 AM EST this semester. The second option is Spinitron, which is where WZBC posts its shows' playlists and hosts a live chat during broadcast. You can listen to an archive of every show within a two week time frame. After that fortnight, they disappear. You can find my past show playlists here.

Artists of Equipboard, we want to hear your music

I cannae believe I'm actually about to do this, but after twice in the krankenhaus in the past month, I figure what have I got to lose?

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1F1vi07LKTqOyXZAtS4NyihQCBaFinZMk/view?usp=sharing

There's my most polished song at the moment--just under a year old, I've sadly not had much time to work on aught else due to my health. It's called "Rain Under the Waves," and other'n ambient, I'm not really sure what else to call it. Soul of Ash is my musician name, feel free to play it if you like the vibe. I'm not about gaining a huge following or whatever, I think I have more followers on Twitter because of my human rights activism than my music, but having a few new ears hear something I did would be pretty neat. If it don't fit what you do, no harm no foul. I'm hoping to do some recording again in the coming weeks (health permitting), that may be more in line with what you're looking for, so if this ain't it, let me know, and I'll slip that your way if/when I get it done.

Thank you so much!

What pedal category are Univibes?

they are in fact optical phasers when there's dry signal present but all electronic vibrato is achieved by phase shift even the true tube vibrato on an original ac30, so they're also kind've a vibrato but not a chorus because there's no continuous delay element to precisely....

its really its own thing, we're revamping the categories generally so please be patient

I can confirm it's a four stage phaser, but it is rather distinct.

What kind of guitar can cats play? And which audio amplifiers should I connect to?

Which guitars and strings will be the most comfortable for the cat's paws?

Are you asking about pet-safe guitar accessories? I don't know any myself, but you can try a pet fence or a lighter gauge string. There are certain strings that are manufactured to be soft on fingers, like this one.

I can't find anything what is Electric Catar?

Unfortunately, this does not exist. gchiaren is just making a pun.

So how do we deal with that? There are a lot of gear still have JHS Pedals and some (edited by you) only have JHS. Could you edit the manufactor to JHS Pedals?

BTW: Same with Keeley Electronics - some Pedals have Keeley Electronics, some only Keeley

Brand's / manufacturer's name is Keeley Electronics: https://robertkeeley.com/

Currently, this can't be done. Once again, would have to speak to the site admins.

Yout don't get my point. The manufactor should be JHS Pedals, not JHS ;-)

Or look at: https://www.jhspedals.info/fuzz-series-supreme

Yes, there is a discrepancy. The original “JHS” brand page was created by gchiaren, so I would refer you to him.
