Consolidating music software. What do you think?

I used a student version of SONAR for a production class back in high school. I've yet to try Bandlab's version.

A similar question is to be asked of Emagic Logic and Apple Logic Pro. Right now I have it set so that Logic Pro is a newer version and users are directed to the purchase link for Logic Pro.

What guitar is Steve Turner playing in the Good Enough video (Mudhoney)

based on closeup @2:03, I'm going to go with 1960s Hofner Super Solid 3:

Consolidating music HARDWARE. What do you think?

I will say, this would be useful for this particular item. It would also realize my request to organize something like an Electro-Harmonix Big Muff.

  • What if successors span multiple brands?

Haven't planned for this, I'd need examples, but a different brand would probably mean a different item.

Coggins Audio comes to mind since its Lovetone and Dinosaural products are being reissued under ThorpyFX. Digidesign's rebranding as Avid is another thing to consider. Then there's the ToadWorks Barracuda, the latest version of which is branded under TEN Effects.

  • What if a single artist has multiple iterations of a consolidated item? How would this be displayed on the main item page?

I wasn't gonna do this, but if it's something you all think is critical, we can accommodate the request.

For example, John Scofield has used ProCo's Vintage Rat, RAT 2 and the Silver Anniversary Rat. J Mascis also has his enormous Big Muff collection; he has five brandings of the Ram's Head Big Muff alone! To that point, would items with significant OEM iterations have subgroups within the consolidated items?

Would they remain searchable as separate items? Would they remain separate on brand pages? Furthermore, would users retain the ability to save specific iterations to their user pages?

Searchable as separate items, yes. Separate on brand pages, probably not. You might see something like "Scarlett Focusrite 2i2" and a tag right under it [3 variations]. Eventually users will have the ability to save a specific iteration to their user page, yes. Maybe not for v1 but eventually.

Would this separation also apply to alternative items? Certain recommendations apply to specific iterations. Also, would this mean the retirement of the alternative items' limited edition tag?

Consolidating music HARDWARE. What do you think?

I think that might be decided on a case by case basis, if something is very ambiguous. I anticipate the merge duplicates process is going to be where this takes place, and those have comment threads to discuss edge cases and ambiguities. So I anticipate having some back and forth discussions. And that's actually perfectly fine, bc for instance clifford_bao_777 knows a ton about bass gear and can really help with merges that require subject matter expertise.

Okay, some supplemental questions:

  • Given recent events, is there a way to prevent this consolidation/merging from further accidentally deleting submissions?
  • What if successors span multiple brands?
  • What if a single artist has multiple iterations of a consolidated item? How would this be displayed on the main item page?
  • Would there be designated "experts" among the userbase? Maybe even consults from the items' companies?

My thought is they would be combined under the "main" item but definitely be filterable.

Does this mean that reviews will be tagged with their respective editions?

Yes and no. We've kind of "unofficially" started treating them as the same item, but this new system would allow us to keep a different color as a "sub-item." So for instance white and black Yamaha HS5 studio monitors would each maintain a separate SKU/UPC for pricing and availability but be rolled up to the same item.

Okay, so this would make price aggregation more comprehensive. Got it. Still, is the color difference that significant? It might get overcrowded, especially for guitars.

Great question! For an item -> sub-item relationship, the sub-items would maintain their own purchase identifiers. So like in my example screenshot with the KRKs, if you were to click on one of the older versions ,the buy links and prices would change to reflect that variant.

Would they remain searchable as separate items? Would they remain separate on brand pages? Furthermore, would users retain the ability to save specific iterations to their user pages?

Consolidating music HARDWARE. What do you think?

While I appreciate the generational organization, I have some concerns. Equipboard has become a historical database of sorts and consolidating items might mean losing records about individual items’ variations and popularity over time. That said, I have a few questions:

  • Some configurations have major differences, while others do not. If this were to go through, how would consolidation be decided?
  • Would the reviews for items of different generations and configurations remain separate?
  • Aren’t colors already merged?
  • How would this effect Reverb and Sweetwater links for pertinent items? Those vendors keep generations and configurations separate. Would merging them cause a price confusion or rating confusion?

Have you ever saved any gears on your Equipboard Wishlist?

Thank you! Where do you usually find these deals if I may know?

You're welcome! It varies. In the past, I noticed that the best deals were B-stocks on ProAudioStar and used listings on Guitar Center or eBay.

Have you ever saved any gears on your Equipboard Wishlist?

I tend not to use my wishlist because I'm pretty content with my setup, but I will do so every once in a while for peripheral utility ideas. However, I tend to find that the best deals at any given time are not always on Reverb and Sweetwater, so it's not always an optimal deal tracker.

Consolidating music software. What do you think?

Consolidation or iZotope RX is mostly done, but as you can see when you search there are lots of results for specific RX plugins. Should all those be merged into the master iZotope RX item as well?

I'd say so.

Is there anyway to edit brands?

My understanding is that Equipboard has a default character minimum when submitting brand names. This might have been the issue.

An admin can make the edit to your submission: https://equipboard.com/brands/k-m-d

Consolidating music software. What do you think?

As long as we could still sub-identify the specific editions, I wouldn't mind. I enjoy the historical posterity that the separation currently provides.

excellent.... my suggestion (and this could work in a modified form for any item) is a drop down for each major DAW that allows you to select either the version number, 'long time user' assuming its an artist who has been with that software for multiple updates, or 'unspecified' if you don't know and can't find out

Basically this.

Not necessarily always about that. I'm one of those weirdos that think inanimate objects have a "soul" haha. I LOVE the Pro Co Rat. But the Big Ear Woodcutter has this small-batch kinda thing that I love about it. Same with a Behringer synth that's trying to sound like a Moog... and a Moog itself.

I totally get that. It’s a mojo factor.

Just saying, some pages have artists that just don't influence me. So how else can Equipboard pages be super useful?? That's the thought exercise here.

Of course.

Hmm not sure what you mean by item navigator, but glad you're on board with the feature.

I meant this. I’m not sure of what to call it.

Say you were to partake in a mind altering substance. Most people will tell you the experience is very subjective. Totally depends what frame of mind you're in, who you're with, your surroundings, etc. Having said all that, isn't it kind of amazing that you can look up something like this? Imagine that for music gear. That's kind of our ambition here. Not trying to tell anyone what to do or how to live with their gear... but providing something beyond what you get from a Guitar Center page.

How would gauges like this be determined? Would it be derived from aggregated reviews like on Leafly and Amazon?

I'd rather own a boutique clone than the tried and true original.

Ah, but what if the original is cheaper?

And I don't think I'm alone, or we'd all just have the most basic ass gear setup (or a digital do-it-all multifx thing).

What's wrong with that? ;)

But look at this item, which I'm considering buying to test it out.

By the way, I'm pretty sure that when I submitted Joe Satriani's it was still a valid link.

Hate to say it but I don't super care about the 2 artists that use it.

If anything, I will recommened Satriani's love songs. Top notch.

  • Rubina
  • Always With Me, Always With You
  • (You're) My World
  • Love Thing

The videos section is pretty decent... but I proposed to Michael what if we move videos further up, like in the main image carousel? That way you can have one playing to hear the gear as you're scrolling around on the page (someone earlier mentioned listening to gear demo vids in the background... I totally agree)

What you're describing sounds similar to a Sweetwater product page. That might get annoying for people who just want to scroll to their favorite artists.

Furthermore, personally I'd like more info on price upfront. Like, hey Equipboard, save me some clicks. We have the pricing data - how much is it new, lowest and highest used prices on Reverb - why not surface it?? I personally love knowing what % off getting gear used versus new is. I suspect we all do some kind of calculation in our head ("ok I can save this much getting it used... if it sucks and I resell it it's worth about this much... oh damn but on Amazon the price is decent and I'd get it tomorrow..."). Equipboard can TOTALLY do a lot of this work for you.

Yes please! I remember when one could see this in the item navigator.

Video demos! The review section and forums are useful for that already, but I could see it expanding into Jim's "freshman lab" concept.

When you guys are looking for gear to make a certain sound in your head now, how do you go about finding it?

I start with a similar sonic reference and do research on it. That could be surfing online for production techniques, consulting Equipboard for artists who did something close, or studying how the gear I already own behaves. Like Jim said, it's about experimentation.

I did mention ModularGrid.

I'm curious if this is true. Don't get me wrong, I don't want people creating pro artist pages and filling them with drivel, but what if we just made a place on Equipboard where it is appropriate to do some self promotion? What if gear photos had embedded soundcloud links so you could assign certain tracks to gear photos so that you could hear the specific gear in the photo? I might like that.

That works for what I'm doing here! Oh, and people could tag their gear to the songs they used them on! Check out what Celestial Effects has on its website.

5yover 5 years ago

Gear Photos

right, that! what mickey did is the thing but maybe something generalized because we can't just have every pedal be movable we don't have good enough pictures for everything and well, what a job!

Pedalboard Planner, ModularGrid and Pedal Playground already exist for that. Besides, then we wouldn't get any photos!

5yover 5 years ago

Gear Photos

okay, that's a cool avenue, but I think RIGHT NOW its not a place for self promotion nor should it be a palce to promote yourself to non-musicians, this is a peer group not a posting for your EPK....

Seconded.

we should do a classifieds/bulletin board like in old timey music stores 'band seeks drummer in UK', 'looking for remixers for EDM' or 'studio open cheap rates' too

That would be cool!

But the signal chain thing for guitar you could have generic movable graphics for like overdrive, distortion etc and you would number them, then a generic amp combo or head and cab.... then you add detail with text everything would get numbered in order but for parallel or whatnot you could also allow connecting arrows to represent signal flow including splits.... I'm trying to explain it maybe if I draw it later

I like what micky_hennemann did here.

videos are a pain, and your kid always susses out that you're shooting one and makes it into an oral history of sonic the hedgehog

It's not for everyone, but it would certainly be useful documentation. We could make a priority list for gear with few or no videos online and in that way we can get sound demos for them. For example, it would be really cool to hear a demo of an Erickson Audio Research PFL-1 Pro Flanger and it seems yallappa_halageri has one(!).

Iw as doing a humorous how to mix video and he totally recked it.... I had a bottle of champagne in it and everything it was great

If it's a humorous video, wouldn't that still work as a brief tangent?

Gear Photos

in short, I don't know that the devil wears prada quote is always applicable

Of course.

So if there is agreement around this sentiment, how can we do better?

1) just starting with guitar, because, look, I'm now accepting guitar will always come first.... we could have like a rig layout thing with signal flow like how the old guitargeek layouts were done.... so you can show your layout and add notes to share your methods.... that simple.... sometimes this stuff is better shown visually... this could grow to studios, I think a lot of younger people shy away from patchbays for example because its hard to visualize and loaded with electronic hurdles but its way better for workflow

This is a great idea. It's intuitive and could be a helpful guide for new users.

who has #2?

More template guides? Idk. There's not that much that can be done with a photo.

Today my Ramble FX Twin Bender V3 arrives, and I'm stoked.

Will a first impressions video be posted on Equipboard's YouTube? ;)

To be honest, I would be more interested in seeing community videos than community photos. They're much more dynamic. I can also put those on in the background as I work and I get to hear the equipment being used. It's also harder to hide a lack of practice in a video, haha!

The subreddit r/guitarpedals is very good about detailed outlines and video demos. They might be worth checking out.

Gear Photos

I think knowing how people use their gear is something Equipboard could do better.

So if there is agreement around this sentiment, how can we do better?

For starters, there needs to more clarity to users that this is not a platform for self-promotion. We're still getting a ton of self-submissions in the artist request queue. It's gotten to the point to where I'm not even sure anymore if they're aware that we can see their gear on their account pages. We also need to make it more clear to users like jmvaughan that Gear Photos is the platform your gear, not new items. He has only one gear photo and 32 lumped items that should be gear photos. The same goes for people who continue to submit guitars in different finishes and/or from inconsequential years, either to show them off separately or because they don't understand the redundancy. An example of the latter is user peter77a, who has crowded George Harrison's page with several Stratocaster duplicates. He also posted an attempted source as a gear photo, which reveals even more confusion.

Some people are even using the related items module as a platform for their own gear pairings now, such as a cheap microphone going into a popular interface.

That aside, Gear Photos could be clarified and more incentivized. It seems unclear to me whether or not people even realize that they can do all the things they're doing above in Gear Photos.

5yover 5 years ago

Gear Photos

it seems like the site is so guitar-centric

Understatement of the year, lol... but if guitarists are the ones merrily clicking the Reverb and Amazon affiliate links these days, and not the Martin Garrix-ers of the EDM craze a few years ago, I can't blame EB for leaning into it.

Part of that may lie in the fact that different genres have different cultures. Orchestral music is less dependent on technology because it didn't veer heavily in that direction. It's the same with jazz, excluding Miles Davis' circle and that ilk.

The instruments in those genres are also generally less iconographic. Most violins and saxophones tend to look practically the same without closer inspection. On the other hand, competition between engineers during the rock and synthpop booms inspired extensive diversification. There is thusly greater product distinction between brands in those fields.

There are classic things that are mythologized with good reason, but I was thinking about the 90s comics boom last night and the pedal boom is starting to feel similar. Eventually will people just wanna go back to Batman on a regular size cover? Are the budget TC boxes a harbinger of times to come?

There's a scene in The Devil Wears Prada that summarizes my thoughts on this well. Here it is via IMDb:

Nate : Why do women need so many bags?

Lilly : Shut up.

Nate : You have one. You put all your junk in it, and that's it. You're done.

Doug : Fashion is not about utility. An accessory is merely a piece of iconography used to express individual identity.

Lilly : Oh! And it's pretty.

Doug : That too.

This mythologization is the mixed result of 1) nostalgia for the golden ages of certain genres, 2) celebrity association ("if he's using it, it must be good"), and 3) the overhyped commercialization of the rock and synthpop tools during those genres' golden ages. They've become symbols of identity, having been imparted the idea that they will make you a part of a celebrity world or a better era. You get beat over the head with it in those magazines from the '80s. Jazz, classical and Baroque haven't been through that gamut in comparison, unless one counts something like a Stradivarius and the big three of Martin, Selmer and Conn.

Daft Punk's Behringer Compressor: Let's Finish This.

I’d say under Thomas Bangalter.

10-4. Logged it. I wasn't sure what the guidance was when someone was primarily part of a duo that is logged here as an artist, not a band. Just because there is a separate Bangalter profile here, doesn't mean that's how the EB folks want us to handle these things... but my gut was to just put it under Thomas, especially now that DP is no more. Thanks for confirming.

No problem!
