New Equipboard Categorization - FAQ & Feedback

Re the 3 pieces of gear, lexman pointed that out earlier in this thread as well. We need to come up with a solution to make that work again, like being able to mark 3 pieces of gear as your 'favorites'.

Re the categorization, I think it has to do with how a specific item's category (in this case the x0xb0x is Musical Instruments > Keyboards, Synthesizers & MIDI > Modular Synthesizers) maps to a section on your Equipboard. You might have to change the actual item's categorization for it to go into a different section.

Does that make sense?

Stuck on kick drum.

This might not be the type of answer you're looking for, but I used to get stuck on kick drums as well. I was making progressive house, and instead of obsessing over the quality of my kicks (which admittedly are very important) I sampled them from existing tracks. So I would take a track like deadmau5 Arguru and sample a clean kick from the very end of the track. That way you've got something 'pro' to work with and you can focus on the rest of the track.

New Equipboard Categorization - FAQ & Feedback

still getting the same error page at the same stage, I dunno dude, maybe its me....

That's so bizarre, because I'm not seeing any obvious errors come through. One quick question that might help me diagnose. When you hit Save, does it linger for a while (30 secs or so) and then show you the error page? OR does it error out right away?

lexman - I agree with you on the 3 favorite items thing. We'll think of some elegant solution for that.

jim - we pushed some bug fixes. Could you try again please? Tell me if it still gives you the error page after you hit Save on the drag & drop modal.

New Equipboard Categorization - FAQ & Feedback

Thanks for the screenshot. It looks like primarily a font problem, the correct EB fonts aren't loading in IE. Noted.

I want to fix the "UPGRADING OUR EQUIPMENT" thing for ya. You said, when "I hit Save". Where exactly? The new 'categorize your gear' screen? Are you able to get to the screen where you can drag & drop to sort your sections?

New Equipboard Categorization - FAQ & Feedback

Hey Jim, I'd love more details. We need to look into all this stuff, if you're experiencing it I'm sure you're not the only one!

every time I try it this morning it tells me you're upgrading your equipment with that splash page

Every time you try what, exactly?

if I try internet explorer it just won't work at all.... in fact, the whole site doesn't load right in internet explorer since Wednesday's (or maybe it was Tuesday's) mandatory windows 10 update

Can you be more specific about "won't work at all"? Is the way it looks messed up? Or does it actually not function or load? Any way you can email a screenshot to michael or I of what it looks like on IE?

the site doesn't run on internet explorer anymore on either of my machines

Again, what do you mean "doesn't run"? That sounds like a pretty crazy bug we need to take care of asap!!

Thanks man

New Equipboard Categorization - FAQ & Feedback

Hi all,

You may have noticed we quietly rolled out something you have been asking for for a long time... your Equipboards are now categorizable like pro artists! Everyone starts off with just a Gear list (and a Want list, we kept that the same as before). There's an orange button in the sidebar that reads CATEGORIZE YOUR GEAR. This is where the magic happens, and will allow you to add categories to your board:

http://i.imgur.com/xp8FOYf.png?1

After that you get to select what sections are most applicable to you, and you can drag & drop to rearrange their order. That way a guitarist for instance can customize their sections differently (Guitars, Pedals, Amps) than an electronic music producer might (DAWs, VSTs, Synths).

You'll also notice we moved things like Submissions and Gear Porn to the sidebar, and got rid of the horizontal tab bar.

Q: Where are the sections coming from?

A: They are the same ones that are found on pro artist pages.

Q: I don't see a section I need. How do I add one?

A: We pull the ones you see from a pre-set list of about 60 sections. We only exposed the most popular ones to start with, but if you want one that's not showing up (i.e. Pianos or Woodwinds), ask us in this thread and if enough people are requesting we're happy to add more.

Q: An item on my board should be in a section, but it's still in Other Gear. What gives?

A: What section an item goes into is determined by the item's category. It's probably that the item in question is either incompletely or incorrectly categorized.

Q: I have a bug fix or feature request related to this. Can I ask here?

A: Yes! Let's keep any and all feedback related to the new board layout in this thread. If you have feedback not related to this, please keep that to the general feedback thread.

9yabout 9 years ago

Can you create more than 1 list?

its actually happening? damn!

Michael was a tad overzealous in promising end of this week, but we're close! 😄

We're working super hard on it, and need to test it for a couple days to make sure we don't screw up all your current Equipboards. Here's a little tease ...

Ed Sheeran settles Copyright Claim

For the lazy:

The songwriters originally claimed the chorus of the two songs shared 39 identical notes, with similarities "instantly recognisable to the ordinary observer". They submitted the chord structures for both tracks in court documents.

Adding PRO feature down?

Ok cool, try creating the pro Jason Whitehorn again. It should work. If it doesn't let me know and we'll keep digging. :)

In the not too distant future we'll expand genres, or at least add the ability to add more "tags." Apologies, but for now you'll have to stick to the genres currently available.

9yover 9 years ago

Adding PRO feature down?

Yup, that's the issue. Sorry you were getting an error message, that's a bug we need to fix on our end.

As far as converting, that gets messy so we stopped doing that. A good way to handle it would be to change the username of the existing member, something like "jasonwhitehornofficial" or "jasonwhitehornmusic", so that the username will be free to be used by a pro. Does that make sense?

9yover 9 years ago

Adding PRO feature down?

Hi there!

Can you let me know the name of the pro artist you're trying to add? I'll look into the issue.

another mystery genre song, AWESOME! HEARITBITCHES!

This is so good. I think it needs to be reeled in and focused up a bit in terms of structure. With good vocals on it'd be absolutely killer. Are the drums electronic or real?

Can i erase a submission?

Ok cool I deleted the second one.

For the first one, just for future reference, "Steve Vai's Strat" is not a valid item. An item on Equipboard should be able to stand alone, so if it's a Fender Strat with a lot of custom modifications, we would rather you just associate a normal Fender Strat and then talk about the customizations in the submission notes.

Does that make sense? I can change this one for you for now. It's partially our fault, we should do a better job explaining the right way to do it when people are making new submissions! 😬

Which of these submissions is the right one, and which one should be deleted?

Complaints, Concerns, Errors, Suggestions, and Ideas! [Feb 2017]

Just to clarify, when I say:

First I hit "Add a Section" and add Guitars first, and all the guitars on my Equipboard would automatically go there.

"Automatically go there" is dependent on individual items being categorized correctly. So if a guitar is categorized under "Solid Body Electric Guitar", "Hollow & Semi-Hollow Body Electric Guitars", or " Steel-string Acoustic Guitars", all 3 of those map to the "Guitars" section.

Michael and I jokingly call it Plinko (from The Price is Right game, here's a gif if you're not familiar). Items "Plinko" into the right section based on their category, i.e. they fall into the correct section provided they're correctly categorized. You probably already know this, because pro artist Equipboards work in the same way. :)

Complaints, Concerns, Errors, Suggestions, and Ideas! [Feb 2017]

I'll kick off this new thread with a compilation of some of the issues people brought up multiple times in the last one (in no particular order):

  • Member Equipboards should look and work more like pro artist boards (i.e. introduce categorization)
  • Private messaging should exist
  • New items added to one's Equipboard should be appended to the end of the list, not the beginning
  • Should be allowed to upload more than just 3 gear photos
  • Some gear should be grouped under an umbrella (for instance, 100s of color and year variations of a Fender Stratocaster)
  • Should have a list on your Equipboard of gear you once owned

The issue that gets brought up more than any other is the first one, to make member Equipboards look & work more like pro artists, with categories. Micheal and I had a long chat about it and have a proposed solution to get the ball rolling. What do you guys think of the following:

You start out with your list of items you have looking like it does now. From the left column, you can choose to "Add a Section." You can then choose between the 40 or so pre-determined sections we have available: Guitars, Amps, Effects Pedals, Headphones, Keyboards and Synthesizers, Software Plugins and VSTs, DAWs, and so forth (for the 1st release of this you have to stick to the pre-determined sections - you can't add your own free-form). When you add a section, all the items on your board that match that section go into it.

In practice it would look like this: First I hit "Add a Section" and add Guitars first, and all the guitars on my Equipboard would automatically go there. My sections would now be:

  • Guitars
  • everything else

Next, I hit "Add a Section" and choose Headphones. All my headphones go into that one. Now my sections would be:

  • Guitars
  • Headphones
  • everything else

This way, everyone can decide what sections are most important to them as musicians, and feature those first (as opposed to having their sections "frozen" in a certain order).

Thoughts on this?

Complaints, Concerns, Errors, Suggestions, and Ideas!

G and Michael

I think now is a good time to respawn this thread. Omit all the suggestions that have already been taken into consideration or worked on and make post #1 a list of issues or concerns that have not been issued yet. I think this will cut down on posts to this section perhaps. But then again, I guess it adds traffic :)

Great idea. Locking this one, and the new one can be found here: Complaints, Concerns, Errors, Suggestions, and Ideas! [Feb 2017].

Complaints, Concerns, Errors, Suggestions, and Ideas! [Feb 2017]

Due to the last thread becoming unwieldy, we're starting a new one! Just like with the last one, this is the place to talk about any ideas you have to improve Equipboard. Anything from a small bug you want to see fixed to a huge new feature is fair game.

As a new naming convention, whenever we feel these threads are getting too big we'll start a new one with the month and year appended to the end, so we can keep track of them chronologically over time.

You can still access the original forum thread here.

Complaints, Concerns, Errors, Suggestions, and Ideas!

I think you didn't expect the members would have such a psychotic amount of gear laying around when you started up ;-)

Hah that's certainly part of it! I think what was also unexpected is how much Equipboard users enjoy the 'pro board' layout (granted it also is not perfect). It's great to see so many people wanting to use EB as their home on the web to catalogue their gear... now we've got some improvements to make! ;)

Baby (X2) are good, happy and healthy, thanks for asking!

9yover 9 years ago

Complaints, Concerns, Errors, Suggestions, and Ideas!

Michael and I truly appreciate everyone's willingness to pitch in and help! Not to worry about the actual coding part, we'll get that handled.

Michael and I's homework is to read through all the various ideas from the forum and emails you guys have sent us regarding member boards. We all agree they need to be overhauled and better organized, but everyone has had a slightly different take on what that could look like!

We'll come up with what a good improvement would entail, and I anticipate needing you guys' input on if you think it's a good solution or not.

9yover 9 years ago

Complaints, Concerns, Errors, Suggestions, and Ideas!

y'know guys, its been said MANY TIMES already here, but again we really need categorized user pages. Mine is a total mess, I can't take it anymore. When can you fit this project in and how long will the retool take EB down for? Its time to answer the people and get on with it.

Michael and I were talking this one out just yesterday. It's a big project no doubt. It wouldn't take the site down per se, but it would just take a little while to work out. I've mentioned before, we're a small operation compared to how big this site has gotten and how much traffic it gets! Good problem to have, though

We're thinking about options to help us expedite this project, including possibly hiring some dev help. The wheels are in motion for it, just need to plan for the time/cost it'll take. I'll post more updates here as they happen.
