This is one of those tough Equipboard edge cases.

Newer Ableton versions will continue to come out, and many artists who have old versions will upgrade... some won't... what should happen on Equipboard then?

I could definitely get on board with consolidating all Ableton versions into one, but I'd like more buy-in from the community. I'd love to hear any opposing viewpoints.

Great suggestions. Here are my thoughts:

Keep the side panel on the right of the screen.

Will do. Also thinking of adding trending or recent forum topics as a module on the sidebar.

Add a Minimize/Maximize button on the submissions.

I hear you on this one, and it was actually slated to go into this release but we nixed it to make the Friday deadline! We'll probably take inspiration from reddit here and have the option to view "card" or "compact", like this.

Get rid of the "See More" button on the bottom of the screen.

Unfortunately we have to keep the "See More" button. Because of the way elements stack on tablets and phones, if it was an infinite scroll you would never be able to reach the elements below. That said, right now the "See More" button is too light and hard to see, we'll make it darker and more obvious.

Right now it shows 10 cards by default, but perhaps if you opt for the compact view we can do more like 20 or 30 so you can scan more at once.

Keep the Artist Gear/Reviews/Gear Photos Banner up top.

To say I'm stoked in an understatement. At NAMM back in January of this year, I fell in love with several pedals, one being the JHS Cheese Ball fuzz/distortion. I started dreaming up a new pedalboard build. Minimal in nature, but I wanted a bit more room to play with than what a Pedaltrain Nano+ provides. I also really like the way single row pedalboards look, so the Nano Max fits the bill perfectly.

The slim profile Strymon Zuma R300 will fit perfectly underneath the board.

And how about that custom limited edition color of the Carbon Copy!

I'll keep you posted on the build progress and how everything sounds.

We just released the ability to do so :) Go to a gear photo you've added and you should see a button for it.

What you're asking for makes sense. After all, if you share your gear photo to a place like reddit, you can have multi-threaded discussions. We think one of the benefits of posting gear setup photos on Equipboard is that won't get buried, unlike reddit or traditional forums. Furthermore you should be able to tag the gear in the photo, so that the photo then lives on the respective item's page.

(We're experimenting with that by the way - check out this photo with a "parts list", and this item with a new PHOTOS tab...)

So why am I telling you all this? Because before making comments on photos fancier, we need to get more Equipboard members aware and participating. Most Equipboard veterans don't remember what the website experience was like when they first joined. Well here's a hint - it kind of sucks!

We need to do a much better job of holding new members' hands a bit, and introducing them to the community features. After all, there are different types of Equipboard members. There are those that love to showcase their own gear and discuss it, those that only want to follow and contribute to pro artist pages, and those that are just database curators (adding/editing items, making sure they have the right specs, etc). And of course members that dip their toe in all that stuff!

But I know we definitely need to do a much better job onboarding new musicians and making them aware that every little contribution they do on Equipboard is making the entire thing better and better. And of course surface cool content in as many ways as possible so that it gets the upvotes/props/replies it deserves.

Currently new members that add great content can tend to feel like they're in an empty room - and it's on us, the Equipboard team, to fix that experience!

In the nav there is now a link to Community Gear Photos.

If you've been on Equipboard for a while you'll know we are transitioning to a new look and feel, so that link is in a slightly different place depending where you are 🤦🏻‍♂️ Sorry about that we'll have it fully transitioned in the coming weeks/months.

The gear gallery is back! Sorted by newest by default, so the same photos don't stay at the top for too long and get all the action.

Also sortable by most upvoted, and most commented.

See the little edit icon next to your photos? Click that and delete will be one of the options.

... and better than ever. They're now the first thing you see on your own and other members' profiles.

(If you've uploaded gear photos before and they are showing up as a white square, don't panic, they're just being re-processed and will be back to normal shortly)

One addition we've made is to be able to bring in gear photos from your Instagram account. We realize you might already have shared some really great gear pics on Insta, so simply by using the photo's links they can quickly be added to your profile.

So, what's next? It's really fun and inspiring to look through people's setups, so it makes sense to add more exposure to this feature.

E.g. If you have a Tube Screamer or a Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol S49, it makes sense to be able to "tag" those things in your photo, which will make the photo appear on those gear pages.

As always, we're curious what you think - what do you want to see us do with gear photos?

Tried both Chrome and Safari, but no luck on either so far. I'm able to access my notifications through the emails that come when someone comments on a post, but that's about it. Still the same 404 Page Not Found message as before when redirecting me to "https://equipboard.com/notifications".

I don't think this is a browser issue. I think that as the codebase has gotten larger, notifications don't always stay in-sync as items on the website get deleted, duplicates get merged, and so forth. It's a battle we've been fighting for a while. I think I found the offending notification in your case, I believe it's an upvote you got on your review of your Gibson ES-330. Mind checking one more time?

🙌 nice! We’re totally redoing gear photos in the next few days and bringing them front and center on your profile. I’m pretty excited to see your setup.

I managed to creat a list after a few attempts where nothing appeared, but I don't see any way of selecting multiple synths and moving them to a custom list. Maybe I just can't see the wood for the trees, so if it's there and I just can't see it in front of my nose, I'd be grateful if someone could point it out. Cheers !

The ability to create, rename, and reorder lists is only a few days old, AFAIK. At the moment, I don't think there is a way to move items to different lists in-bulk, it's a one-item-at-a-time reassignment via:

1. Click on item within your Equipboard
2. Click orange "Saved" button
3. "Create List" if you haven't created it already
4. uncheck the previously-assigned list, and check the new one, then Save.
5. Repeat approx. 172 more times...

I feel you and carbinax on this one.

I was thinking in the "..." menu there could be a an option named "Move" or "Re-save" or "Re-list" something not confusing haha, and that would essentially just bring up the save dialogue and you could uncheck the item's current list, and check another. That would at least let you shuffle items around without leaving your profile page.

Apologies for the frustration. It's unusual for someone to save 170+ items to one list! The reason we expose 20 at a time is website performance. The more gear we have to load all at once the more sluggish profiles become... we've tried to address lots of flexibility people have been asking for - the ability to create as many lists as you want, and name them whatever you want, sort them, etc. But there are some "one size fits all" decisions that need to be made - it's a necessary evil.

Maybe you could split the plugins list up somehow? I'm not sure what criteria you could use - perhaps your most used ones in one list, and the rest? Or split them up by synths, effects, and mastering plugins?

First of all, I'd love to know - what would you like to see on your profile to show that you're an artist?

The reason I ask is because there are two types of accounts on Equipboard - profiles like yours and mine, and ones that can be edited and contributed to by anyone. And to Jim's point, we're aiming to eventually make them nearly indistinguishable.

I haven't looked through all your social media stuff or Googled your name, so I don't know what type of "fame" level and exposure you've had, but the latter type of profile only makes sense if you think there are many fans out there who can't wait to contribute gear to your profile.

Like, it wouldn't make sense for ME to do that, because I'm not a famous artist in the least so my profile would just gather dust... also we sort everything by popularity so mine would be buried.

Instead I manage my own page where I can list my gear any way I want, write reviews to say what I think of it, etc. And I see you've done that to an extent.

So, that begs the question - what would you like to see on your profile that would make you more happy with it? Is it missing the genre & role tags (e.g. Producer, Guitarist, etc)? Is it missing being able to attach photos of your own gear? Do you just want some kind of verified "check" that designates you as someone who creates music and performs live?

If you tell me, there's a good chance we'll build the feature. 🙂

The "sort" icon next to the list name is now used to reorder lists, and the link to reorder the gear under a list has been moved into the ... menu.

so I noticed a glitch reordering my gear on my profile. The polysix was at the bottom. I moved it up, I hit show more and there were 2 polysixes. One where I moved it and one at the bottom. So I deleted the 2nd one at the bottom. They all disappeared. I added it again, moved it up, now I see 2 again.

Fixed! That was a great catch Jim. The first 20 items that show under a gear list were being properly sorted, but not the next sets of 20 after hitting "Show More" 😬

Really good catch on this bug. As you pointed out, it wasn't subtracting one from the count when moving from one list to another. Should be fixed now!

😆... did you notice you can set any three favorites using the heart icon? And those are the three that will accompany your forum posts. Give it a shot!

It's actually very interesting to see all your favorites. Who knew, your fav gear is not a set of strings or a mic stand? 😂 😂 😂

Makes me think, should favorites be more prominently displayed on the profile (not just confined to the forum)? Maybe make the heart icon show within the cards when you're viewing someone else's profile?

Clicking on the stars on my own page doesn't do anything for me in many cases though - I suspect those might be items that I gave a star rating but skipped writing the text review.

Good catch. I'll make those clickable so the star rating can be changed if you so choose.

Loving life with the new profile UI thus far. Cleaner, some reduction in cognitive load, but with nothing meaningful lost vs. old layout... for me at least.

Playing with it myself, I find myself wanting the ability to have a "move" option on each item I've already saved, under the "..." menu. It would essentially be the same save item menu, but it would allow me to shuffle items between lists more easily (uncheck one and check another). For instance, I've recently sold and bought gear so I would use that to move some pedals from my "Pedalboard" list to my "Had" list more easily.

Thank you! And it's not just skin deep. We rebuilt it from the ground up, which means cleaner/faster code, and the ability to make changes much faster, for whenever you crazy bunch throw ideas at us :)

Right you are, Equipboard's codebase has gotten quite large over the years. And we get a substantial amount of traffic, so it works best to roll out one major piece at a time.

Absolutely! You click on the stars from the gear "cards" on your own page. Perhaps we should make that more obvious, with a "read review" or "edit review" link... 🤔

That sounds really cool, but realistically we're a ways away from that. Before, the gear recommender could stand to be cleaned up and modernized, and every time I personally use it I think of improvements.

Next we are going to tackle bringing back gear photos. The existing ones are still there, you can still get to them by going to equipboard. com /[your_username] /photos. But they are still on the "old" site. They are going to become an integral part of people's profiles, and in fact lead the way before you get to the gear.

Done! Saving items has been re-enabled as well.

THE GOOD NEWS: The new profile page is rolling out as we speak!!

THE BAD NEWS: A tremendous amount of code changed during this release, and there's a brand spankin' new underlying structure. It'll take a few hours to convert every member in the Equipboard database to the new structure. So if you go to your profile and it's empty... don't panic!! It just means your user id hasn't yet been processed for the conversion to take place. The starting point for your own Equipboard profile page will be just as it was when you last made any changes to it.

To keep the integrity of the database while we convert everyone, we temporarily disabled saving any gear. That functionality will of course be back ASAP.

I'll keep this thread updated when the rollout of the new code finishes doing it's thang. Happy Friday everyone. 🍻

No, not just you. We're getting rid of that terminology. In general, the gear photos have always been one of those "half baked" sort of features. We want to redo it, and make them much more prominent. It makes sense that photos lead the way into someone's Equipboard profile. For example, if I had a custom car or motorcycle build, you would want to see the finished product first, and then the parts list. Same thing with a music studio, pedalboard, etc.

To give you an update, we're probably 3-4 days away at this point from rolling out your new Equipboard profiles. One of the biggest changes will be that you are free to make whatever sections or lists you want (don't worry we'll carry over what everyone has currently so you have a base to start from).

The only other thing I can think of is maybe a "Rig layout," where you can show off how you run your signal chain.

We won't quite have that exact functionality, BUT with the ability to make multiple lists, nothing will stop you from having, say, a "My Amps" list where you list your Vox Pathfinder 15R and any other amps you own, and another "Signal Flow" list where you lay out the order in which your guitar > pedals > amp is hooked up.

We'll call this upcoming revamp version 1, but be aware that this will not yet include an overhaul of the gear photos. Redoing gear photos requires some special attention, so we'll call that version 2 and it'll be released a little bit after.

So, the gear saved to your profiles, let's call each piece of gear a "card" (it's kind of tech speak but bear with me).

I'm curious, do you all like the way it is now, where each card has a little preview of the review you've written for the gear? Like this:

OR would you prefer a cleaner card, with only the gear's picture and name, and to go and read and manage the reviews you've written (or want to write), that would live on its own dedicated page? Minimalist cards would look like this:

We want you to be proud of building your profile pages, with photos, reviews, etc. And to that end we want you to want to share them with your musician buddies and other gear communities. By including the start of your review on each card, is that too "busy" looking? Do you prefer a cleaner look? Or do you like seeing the start of the review so you can click on "more" to read the full thing?

I'll throw in some things I'd like to see, in no particular order:

• In the forum, the 3 pieces of gear that are featured from your Equipboard make no sense. It would be cool to be able to select your 3 favorite or most important pieces of equipment.
• If someone added gear photos, it would be great to see those first thing on someone's profile. I think setup pics are very interesting and they can then give way to the list of gear.
• The WANT list should behave like a more traditional wishlist. I think one of Equipboard's advantages is, as an independent website, it's not beholden to any one store or marketplace, so it would be cool to pull interesting info from your wishlist items like who has the lowest new price, the fastest shipping, the best used price, etc. And I could periodically get emails if something goes on sale.

I haven't been able to read my notifications on the site itself at all in 2020. I get the red indicator that I have a new notification, but My Profile > Notifications always leads to a 500 error page.

Is this everyone, or just me?

Ugh! 😖 I think what's happening there is we're making references to items or comments that have since been deleted (or duplicates that have been merged) and the code isn't handling that properly.

I tweaked the code, so hopefully your 500 error is fixed. pkennethk, xaqary, can you please try your notifications again?

How are users able to upload multiple pictures for one listing?

This was something we did automatically to a few thousand products on the site a while back. Users aren't able to do it yet... but it's actually one of the things we're going to enable in the coming weeks.

Just to lay out a rough roadmap, before we get to that, we're looking to redesign the Equipboard home page, and redesign a user's Equipboard page. Those are in desperate need of some love!
