How cheap is too cheap?

Have you looked at the Vox AC4TV? Or is that out of price range? Also I assume the best small tube amp article is the one you alluded to being helpful in this case?

New Gear Day

Ok I will check out insTuner. I like them especially, the .6mm are my go-to! When they're brand new I love how they feel, just the right amount of grip!

New Gear Day

Most of the time... I use YouTube tuners :)

Hah I used to as well! I would just do a search in YT for "guitar tuner" and used the first video that came up. Half the time it would play a 30 second ad before which got super annoying! Then I switched to that free Guitar Tuna app, but as much as I like it it still requires my phone by my side, unlock it, fire up the app, etc.

These clip-on tuners are great. I tested out a Snark, great value, good and cheap. The PolyTune Clip is pricier but the look & feel and functionality is a little more premium :)

New Gear Day

Nothing to write home about but always fun to pick up some fresh gear :)

I've been picking up the acoustic a lot around the house, and tuning up using this pretty nice app called Guitar Tuna. However I like the idea of a clip-on tuner. I recently spent some time testing the TC Electronic PolyTune 2 and was super impressed, I read the PolyTune Clip is basically just that same pedal in clip form, so I'll give it a try.

Replacing Monster guitar cable

Just an update on this story:

About a week after I contacted Monster, they replied and asked me for my info and what cable it is, as well as what the problem is. They will send me an RMA number, I have to ship it back to them (at my expense) and then I'm hoping they send me a replacement.

Sounds like it's a bit of a slow-going process but so far so good.

Anyone bought any new cds or downloaded anything or gowever you get your music?

sounds... TAME

hurr hurr hurr

It sure is tame haha. So far it's... okay. I'm sure it needs more listens. As of now I much prefer Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, in fact now I'm in the mood to listen to that :)

Anyone bought any new cds or downloaded anything or gowever you get your music?

I might be late to the party on this, but John Mayer just Instagrammed the cover of Tame Impala's album Currents and said:

This is the best* record of the past two or three years. Proven many times over in my mind. Think Radiohead 1996. Coldplay 2003. Phoenix 2008. Melody heaven. If I ever got broken up with by a girl for the guy in Tame Impala I'd be like, "I understand, and if you don't mind, could you maybe bring him to a show of mine sometime?" *my opinion duh

I REALLY like 1996 Radiohead/2003 Coldplay/2008 Phoenix. Going to give this a listen this morning for sure.

bath salts

Yea of course, this is genuinely good. No worries take your time and keep us posted.

Progress sounding good. I loved the chopped vocal sample at the start of the last clip, it gave it some urgency. But it wasn't present in this last version. Maybe just a different part of the track?

This is so fucking good. I want more. Please let us know when it's done. People need to hear this one, happy to help even if it's just a few shares from the Equipboard social accounts (hey, deadmau5 follows the EB Twitter so ya never know).

Speaking of it totally sounds like something that would work on mau5trap.

Best small, low-watt tube amps. How'd we do?

Thanks for the feedback.

It was tough to cut it down to the "top 5" format, because to your point there are SO many of these! The raw ordering came from a tally of recommendations by guitarists around the web (so kind of a popularity contest in a way), and we went in and tried to validate it with our reviews.

Fair point about the Bugera V5. To be fair we liked it. Aside from sounding pretty good, the inclusion of reverb, a headphones out, plus its price tag do make it a great value. I would have bought the AC4TV on the spot for bedroom practice if it had onboard reverb + headphones output.

The Marshall DSL5 is great but it's on the higher end of the budget range, not sure that's in the running for "best bang for the buck." Speaking of Marshall, in terms of tonal versatility I have to say we were most impressed with the Blackstar HT-5R. Have you ever played with that one?

And you're totally right about the Blues Junior being LOUD, in fact we were curious why it gets recommended so often for quiet home practice. We included that as a disclaimer in the guide. It's too bad Fender doesn't currently have a budget small tube amp. And yes, the Fender Champion 600 did come up a few times as a recommendation.

Best small, low-watt tube amps. How'd we do?

With smaller tube amps being all the rage, we were curious to uncover what the most popular ones are, and which are getting recommended the most. We spent a bunch of time researching, and even tested out several in person.

How'd we do? Best Small Tube Amps

Apologies, I don't know a whole lot about Gretsch guitars, does the "Electromatic" signify something different/special vs a Gretsch that's not Electromatic?

[FOR SALE] Access Virus C Desktop Module (discount for my Equipboard friends)

That will cover aproximately 130 to 140 two packs of soothies. You have 2 kids so your binky loss/destruction rate is twice as high as mine was.

Given the unusually high infant-to-adult ratio at your house you are maybe being overly generous with your shipping and EB-member discount!

That is all correct but it just goes to show how much I love you guys :)

[FOR SALE] Access Virus C Desktop Module (discount for my Equipboard friends)

Hey all, selling my Access Virus C Desktop Module. 100% functional, cosmetically 8/10. I'm selling it on other sites for $748...

BUT for my Equipboard fam, $50 off. FREE shipping, UPS ground (packed securely, insured, and tracked). Any EB member is fair game for the $50 off, just show me you're active on the site :) So, $698 all in (PayPal only please).

No original box, manual, or power supply (you'll need a basic 12V DC power supply to power this bad boy).

As wonderful and legendary as this synth is, I'm rethinking my studio setup and I'd rather this go to a better home to someone who will use it to its fullest.

Here's a pic:

An Equipboard scavenger hunt! Artist gear missing proof...

Yes, this is getting pretty confusing now.

So far, we've done :

19, 20, 33 - 47, correct me if I am wrong.

Heh, I thought that might happen. Thanks for taking a shot at numbering them. Yeah the artists I'm seeing that have been touched on thus far are:

John Frusciante, Jack White, Avicii, Nick Valensi, Alex Turner, Jonny Buckland

You guys are good :)

OK, I'll take that as a yes, and I just added the first batch of 148. PLEASE number the one you're doing, so basically just copy and paste the row you're doing/identifying. Otherwise it'll be a nightmare to keep track!

An Equipboard scavenger hunt! Artist gear missing proof...

Hi all,

In the early days of Equipboard, gear could be associated with an artist without requiring proof (i.e. a source link, and explanation notes). You might have noticed some of these "proof-less" associations while browsing around.

I ran a script to find them all, more or less in order of artist popularity on EB. I thought it would be good to put a chunk of them here, and start a sort of scavenger hunt so we can get them filled in with the appropriate proof!

These artist <> gear associations could be:

  • totally incorrect (or not provable)
  • somewhat correct, maybe item needs to be changed
  • correct, and in need of proof + explanation notes

If you can prove or disprove any of them, comment in this thread, so Michael and I can update them. To keep things neat and tidy use this format:

  1. Artist: [name] Item: [name] <-- you'll just copy and paste this line

Source: http://google.com <-- use markdown syntax otherwise it will embed it in the forum and be harder to read :(

Notes: yada yada yada

To make things interesting, I'll take the top couple of people filling these out in this forum thread, and I'll send you something fun :)

Disclaimer: DO IT FOR THE LOVE OF EQUIPBOARD, not for whatever "prize" there is haha. Quality over quantity, always. I don't want to make this some super formal contest. If you only know a couple, chime in and help! If you are totally killing it and filling in dozens, then there might be a reward at the end is all I'm saying!

Best thing I've seen all week - Red Hot Chili Peppers Carpool Karaoke

Ya know I honestly don't know much about Josh Klinghoffer. I truly miss RHCP John Frusciante :( In fact, gonna throw on a live show of theirs in the background as I work today!

Must be interesting for Klinghoffer to join a legendary band like that so late in their career. Huge honor no doubt, but also kind of weird in some ways? Maybe? This is interesting:

Klinghoffer was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the Red Hot Chili Peppers in 2012, becoming the Hall of Fame's youngest-ever living inductee at age 32 passing Stevie Wonder, who was 38 when he was inducted.

Best thing I've seen all week - Red Hot Chili Peppers Carpool Karaoke

@ dukeuke Yes!! I think we posted that on the EB Facebook page at one point. I super-geek out over stuff like that. The mix logistics/preferences of a band live on stage - especially at a huge show - is fucking fascinating.

When I was younger and just starting to attend live shows I was the guy who was gear spotting (of course), and always wondering about stuff like: What does everyone like to have in their monitors? What banter and interactions between the band am I not privy to? Do they like the way the mix is sounding at this specific show, do they hate it and are just putting on a nice face? What do they think of the crowd haha

@ boom762 Totally! They all seem so at ease, and the RHCP guys in particular seem so damn fun to hang out with. :)

Complaints, Concerns, Errors, Suggestions, and Ideas!

Quick question: Does this count as a source? I'm really strict about forums, but this may be an exception. Not sure, though.

Another thing, could a mod please delete this sumbission?

Deleted.

And yes, I believe that counts, as that's rjd2 himself answering in that forum. It's generally agreed upon in that forum that it's him. If you make any subs from that, try to take screenshots and upload them to Imgur so the source lives forever and embeds nicely on EB, as opposed to just a forum link :)

Anyone bought any new cds or downloaded anything or gowever you get your music?

Here's some of what's on rotation these days (this is from my iTunes, often I just listen to live shows on YouTube but I won't list those):

We Are Scientists - Helter Seltzer (Love these guys. Just recently saw them live and they put on an amazing show)

Travis - Everything at Once (One of my favorite bands. Still trying to decide if I like this new album though...)

Underworld - Barbara Barbara, We Face A Shining Future (Legends. Whenever a band whose old material I loooovvve releases something new I brace myself for massive disappointment. Happy to say Underworld's new album stays true to what made them awesome in the first place.)

DMA's - Hills End (If you like Oasis you'll like DMA's, because WOW they sound similar - I discovered them by tuning into the Coachella 2016 live stream)

Mat Zo - Self Assemble (One of my fav electronic artists, the guy is so talented and versatile)

mineral_walter: Welcome! You've racked up an impressive amount of GearIQ in a very short period of time :) I'm enjoying reading through your gear reviews, they're very good.

I want to touch on the non-music stuff again. I don't think it has ever officially been said that non-music gear is NOT ok on Equipboard. I know it's a hotly debated topic here. The problem is, people that are interested in consuming non-music gear don't really speak up. Example: John Mayer is an avid watch enthusiast/collector. People that are into that go to John Mayer's page and enjoy browsing through it. But then those that are jarred by that info being on Equipboard come to the forum and go "what the fck is this?!" ;) So, I want to make a few points:

  1. There are some relics of the very first iteration of Equipboard where we experimented aggregating the gear of non-music pros - chefs, rock climbers, etc. We hid those folks from the site's search functionality, but they still exist on the site and we need to purge them. We just haven't gotten around to it since it's more fun and productive to work on features that you guys suggest to make the site better!

  2. Non-music gear on music artists: I am of the opinion this kind of stuff is OK to a certain extent, but there needs to be better separation for people that don't care about it. For instance, all of the non-music/lifestyle gear can be grouped in one section, and if you follow John Mayer you have a little checkbox where you can opt-out of getting any gear update emails pertaining to non-music stuff. Just an idea, definitely open to debating the best way to handle this.

  3. Marginal non-music things like PC components: I think these should be fair game. One of the more popular artists on Equipboard, deadmau5, frequently shows off what new computer components he's buying, and we've gotten feedback that people love getting those gear updates. If a music artist did a custom PC build for music and detailed it somewhere, adding those things to their Equipboard page I think is ok. We DO probably need a Computers & Peripherals category which is I think is sorely missing, and all that stuff (from MacBook Pros to video cards) should go under it.
