PLEASE HELP ME

Hi Timi,

Happy to point you in the right direction, but you'll have to give more details. So you have FL Studio 10. I assume you want to produce electronic music? Who are some of the artists that inspire you? Do you have any other gear? Do you have a musical background (piano, guitar, etc) or are you starting from scratch? What are your goals?

Sorry for all the questions but you'll find it's hard to get help unless you can be more specific and focus up a bit! :)

Complaints, Concerns, Errors, Suggestions, and Ideas!

Not really a complain or everything, just thought I would share the Noel Gallagher's setup, with NME Godlike Genius award between THD Hot Plates... lol xD

I <3 Noel Gallagher and I <3 this photo. Mind if I post to the Equipboard Facebook page?

Fresh apple

thank you for the correction.. Personally I like porter Robinson , kaskade and MK , Ferry Corsten.. the list goes on but I Like Kaskades music/sound the most!

Cool! All great artists. Porter Robinson is great, his studio seems fairly minimal (see here). Kaskade on the other hand has a ridiculous looking studio!

Since you already have Logic as your DAW, at a minimum you'll want a decent pair of headphones (add studio monitor speakers if you can afford it), an audio interface, and a midi keyboard so you can play and record your synths into Logic. No need to buy software synths at this point, the stock Logic synths are pretty great, and you can always find the free synth plugins.

Here are some resources to help you out:

We haven't done a buyer's guide for MIDI keyboards yet (we need to!). Porter Robinson uses an Akai MPK61, while Ferry Corsten uses a Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol S49.

Fresh apple

Hey Eddie, welcome! Logic Pro is a great choice for a DAW. Who are some artists you want to sound like?

In terms of speakers (they're called studio monitors in the pro audio world), Equipboard has a guide that would be a good starting point. Check it out! Best Studio Monitors

Do demo videos count as an artist using gear?

As far as I know, there is no hard and fast rule about this on Equipboard.

I would be inclined to say that if a pro artist is using a product in a demo video, it should count as a correct submission. There are lots of different types of product <--> artist associations. Broadly, I would say we're distinguishing between these two types:

1) The implicit endorsement, where the artist doesn't necessarily talk about an item they use, and the Equipboard community can discover it, and debate the details and accuracy.

2) The explicit endorsement, where a brand sponsors an artist, and has them pose for a photo, write a Tweet, post an Instagram... or do a demo video. Sure, it might not feel as authentic as the other case, but I argue it's still interesting. In fact, the demo videos by artists often go into much more detail, and you can get a great sense for how the artist uses a piece of gear. I'm personally thankful when brands put out really interesting videos about artists and their gear, even if the endorsement is painfully obvious :)

We started Equipboard with the spirit that most artist <--> product associations are interesting, and there needs to be a place on the Internet where this stuff is collected, backed by a super passionate community (you all!) that can talk discover it, talk about it, and keep it accurate. Let's say Equipboard did golf, and someone added this Instagram of Under Armour shoes to Jordan Spieth. Is the endorsement painfully obvious? Definitely! Is this information interesting to some people, and would make them curious about the shoes? Your milage may vary, but I would argue yes!

tl;dr: I vote yes, demo videos count because it's a legit artist/item association.

Gear Update emails - what could be improved??

As most of you probably know, when you follow an artist and the community adds new gear to said artist, you get a Gear Update email that looks like the screenshot below. We've been thinking a lot about those emails and what we could improve.

Would love to hear what you think of that email, and if you have any feedback for us on how it could be better, more interesting, more useful, etc. Don't hold back - tell us what sucks :)

Reporting and Deleting submissions

All of these are great suggestions. Some of these exist, and some still need to be built:

I'd propose a report submission button for posts that need review, to quickly alert admins to errors. Is there already a feature like this available?

We just released some new tools around this! Underneath every submission you should see an "EDIT THIS SUBMISSION" button, which allows you to make edits. It's a lot more like a Wiki this way, where changes can be kept track of as submissions (hopefully) improve over time. Unfortunately, only admins can change out items while this is still in Beta... If you want to get an admin's attention in a submission's comment thread, you can always @-mention them!

To add on to this, I'd also recommend a report item function to merge duplicate items, and fix spelling

We'll be working on full item edit-ability soon. There's a tool to merge duplicates but it's kind of hidden. You can report a duplicate item using here: http://equipboard.com/duplicate_items/new

We have lots to do still and we're hard at work! Thanks for your ideas though, we love hearing them :-)

10yover 10 years ago

More editability is coming!!!

Hah yeah, you're right that's not on the live site. That's a screenshot from development, where we build and test things before pushing them live!

Glad you guys are stoked for this, we're sooo excited to push it out. Seriously we are drowning in email requests for this, and it makes total sense.

We'll release more of an FAQ as we get closer to launch, but for now I will say that the way it basically works is you'll be able to give Quality Ratings to every submission on Equipboard. When you first submit something the quality will be "Needs Review," and it's up to another Equipboard member to rate something as "Needs Improvement" or "Correct." Every submission will be editable.

That's the gist of it! If anyone has any questions just ask :)

Help identifying Fender acoustic guitar...

It's actually Avicii :)

Someone submitted the guitar to his Equipboard but the submission is pretty incomplete, and we've been getting a bunch of emails from people wanting it properly identified!

It's driving me nuts I cannot find a single one with the neck that comes to a point like that.

10yover 10 years ago

Help identifying Fender acoustic guitar...

"Fender" is written on the headstock, so we know that much :-) Other than that, I notice it has no pickguard, and the end of the neck comes to a point.

I haven't come across any Fenders that match this one exactly. Any ideas?

Leslie effects pedal and eq

Glad you asked about an EQ pedal! We recently did a buyer's guide on that, check it out: The best EQ pedals.

It's interesting that the top two recommended pedals are the cheapest one followed by the most expensive one.

Hope it helps!

33 famous guitarists, their first guitars, and how they learned

Just posted this! It was fascinating to research what gear pro guitarists started out with, how they learned to play, and what their first song was.

http://equipboard.com/posts/online-guitar-lessons#famous-players-on-their-first-guitars

Here's mine--

First Guitar: My dad's old nylon string guitar that was gathering dust in a closet, then graduated to a proper Ibanez steel string acoustic.

How I Learned: First "lesson" I did was self-taught, I printed out open chord diagrams and learned them all :)

First Song: Kama Police by Radiohead

What's the first song you learned on the guitar, and what were you playing?

Small practice amp on a budget

Agh that's a tough question to answer! The Orange Micro Terror gets some amazing reviews. It seems that's the practice amp to get for the tone snobs out there :) Then again, the Mustang seems more versatile, with the on-board effects (which you might not need) and the modeling. I think it kind of comes down to what you value more - a more pure sound and plenty of headroom from the Orange? Or a slightly more tech-y and versatile amp that can more or less model a bunch of different tones?

I love the band Foals and it's so cool that Jimmy Smith uses the Fender Mustang as a practice amp in the dressing room :)

Small practice amp on a budget

The Micro Terror looks great but will you need a speaker cab with it?

I'm almost sold on a Fender Mustang as well, the demo videos make it look so appealing!

Small practice amp on a budget

Hey! We recently put out a guide for this very thing, how to choose a practice amp on a budget.

It sounds like you got spoiled right off the bat w the Marshall and Les Paul - don't ever let go of your girlfriend's dad, he sounds amazing ;)

Since it looks like you have some good pedals, maybe you should look at the Vox AC4TV, or Orange CR3 Micro Crush? My practice amp is an Orange CR30R. It doesn't have any on-board effects, just an OK reverb, and it takes pedals well. I like the sound of it personally, for a practice amp at least.

Hope this helps!

How do I get better from here?

YouTube is a great resource, but it's so large you need to have a specific thing you are looking for. Even if someone said "I want to learn just the basics of guitar". You could find 1000 videos on just that, but the videos that are going to be the most useful to you are the ones that play the music you want to play and discuss the techniques those genres use in detail.

Great point! Ok, I'm going to go with what starguitar originally asked. What are some good YouTube resources for the intermediate guitar player who wants to improve their soloing technique?

Also completely agree with nickgrooves and jimmarchi1 above on this --> "The fact that your O.P. broke soloing and chords into two separate categories is a red flag"

11yalmost 11 years ago

How do I get better from here?

This is a good thread. To starguitar's point, do any of you guys have recommendations for good lessons on YouTube? I think that would actually be really interesting to see, what the community thinks are some great channels or individual videos to improve your chops.

Might make an interesting article too, if we were able to compile that!

I'll start with one I like - not quite a proper lesson video, but the series Guitar Moves is good (on the Noisey channel), in that the artists go into their own style and technique a bit, and you're able to watch them move on the fretboard and practice the same licks they're showing.

What do you think about your new forum flair? :-D

We added some spice to this wonderful forum by adding some flair to your user profile. Under your avatar, we now show the first three pieces of gear from your Equipboard! It looks like this:

I think this will be a cool way to at-a-glance see what kind of a musician or gear-head someone is. You can re-order gear on your Equipboard if you want to change what goes into the first three coveted slots :-)

Mat Zo rocking his Equipboard t-shirt!! (photo)

Hi all! Wanted to share something super cool I found over the weekend. Mat Zo is one of my favorite DJs/producers. I think I might be responsible for half his SoundCloud plays :-P

Anyhow, I was scrolling through my Twitter feed and I came across this Tweet showing Mat Zo wearing an Equipboard t-shirt this past friday during his set at Pacha NYC!! Check it out:

http://i.imgur.com/fnX24Yf.jpg

How cool is that!? We built a lot of Equipboard with Zo's mixes in the background, so it's a huge honor to see him rocking the t-shirt at a big venue :-D

Your musician pet peeves

Get it off your chest, nickgrooves, that's what this thread is for :-D

Haha so in other words when people completely ignore the question you're asking?

11yalmost 11 years ago

Starting a new equipboard

Definitely! We encourage it!

However, this brings up a good point:

It's a bit tricky with a band like Years & Years. What I mean by that is that they are an electronica trio. Thus, they probably tweet/fb/instagram about the gear they use, and it makes sense to add Years & Years as a single pro/artist. You can do that by going here.

Their lead singer actually has his own Wikipedia page, which makes me think he might be influential enough to maybe get his own pro artist profile?

Looking at it more closely, it doesn't look like he's done much aside from being in Years & Years, so maybe he doesn't need his own page. Just thought I would mention this for future reference!

How Do I Add a Band to a Pro's page

Hey! That's a great question, and apologies but we haven't created that feature yet. A ton of people are asking us for it, so we'll get to it as soon as possible. We'll make an announcement in the forum when we roll out some updates. Thanks for being patient with us, hope you're enjoying the site otherwise! :-)

Your musician pet peeves

THIS. So much this.

narcist you made me laugh out loud... because I totally do this, and have had it done to me countless of times. If I'm playing and someone talks to me or asks me a question, my responses to them are slowed at least 5X. It's absolutely hilarious that you describe it as "dead eyes" and "creepy," that's such an apt description.

Other person: "Hey, gchiaren, what do you think about blah blah blah?"

Me: [long pause] "mmm.... mmm hmmm..." [another long pause] "...definitely."

http://i.imgur.com/QLC0cfS.jpg (that's not me, but that's the closest pic I could find of that look lol)

11yalmost 11 years ago

Your musician pet peeves

As someone who plays music and/or owns some music gear, what are some things that annoy you? What are your pet peeves?

I'll start 😏

  1. When someone calls every part of a song "the beat" (this is especially true in hip hop and electronic music). They'll comment on the melody or the vocals and say they love "that beat." No! Learn basic parts of a track!!

  2. When someone just assumes they don't have to ask you to pick up and play your instruments. 99% of the time I don't mind that they do, but just please ask! Would you drive someone's car without asking them?? :)
