What was your first instrument purchase?

Ohh this is a good one. Ok I grew up playing classical piano, so I'm not gonna count the shitty piano we were renting :P

After I quit piano lessons, I went straight into keyboards, synths and drum machines. The Roland MC-303 Groovebox was my first foray into the world of synthesis. I didn't own one, my friend did, and he let me borrow it and I didn't leave my room for days.

My parents were really supportive of my music habits, so they graciously bought me a Roland JP-8000 and Boss Dr. Groove DR-202 that I asked them for (I later sold the JP-8000... really wish I still had it today). I hooked them both up to my PC and used Cakewalk to make some tunes :) That's also when I fell in love with my first software synth, the Audio Simulation Dream Station - loved that thing.

Years later I got into guitar, and the first one I ever bought was an Ibanez Artwood acoustic, don't quite remember the model.

Man, trip down memory lane!

Akai mpk249

Yes I would think so! Here is an article on how to set up the MPK249 with Logic Pro X: http://www.akaipro.com/kb/article/1600

Most MIDI controllers will work well with most DAWs (some are specifically made to work best with Ableton Live, but still they will work with other DAWs).

This needs an app or something

Hey everyone! Thanks for the feedback on the mobile site. I'm one of the guys responsible for building Equipboard, so it's extremely helpful to hear what you have to say.

The Equipboard team is still pretty small - hopefully growing soon ;) With limited resources, we need to work on the things that have the biggest impact for the most people. When making a mobile site, we decided to first focus on a read-only experience (and following artists you like):

http://i.imgur.com/wdLeER5l.png

la_phant you're absolutely right, we need to make it so that you can add new gear, save gear, and contribute items to artists from the mobile app. We actually really want to build a native mobile app for iPhone & Android soon!

jimmarchi1 I'm curious about your feedback - what types of things would you want to be able to do on mobile?

I feel you guys' pain too. It would be awesome if I could write a review or save new gear or upvote a good comment from my phone... and right now none of that is possible :(

What would be extremely helpful to the Equipboard team is to hear the things that would be most important to you on an Equipboard mobile experience. What are you missing the most?

Thanks!! 🀘

Fender Jazzmaster, Jaguar or Mustang?

Jazzmaster is my vote. Absolutely gorgeous guitars, and they sound killer. The Troy Van Leeuwen one is a beauty:

http://images.equipboard.com/uploads/item/image/11703/fender-troy-van-leeuwen-jazzmaster-xl.jpg

Having said that, I think you can find a killer Mustang for less money - Jazzmasters can get pricey. A mustang is more minimal for sure. They both have swagger... OK buy both πŸ˜„

HAHA I love it 😁 Yeah, Equipboard is NSFW (Not Safe For Wallet).

What kind of gear is your children's inheritance going to go towards? Pedals? Vintage guitars? Synths?

What Is your favorite band?

Hard to narrow it down but if I HAD to pick one... Depeche Mode! I feel like their music has had an amazing influence in my life. Martin L. Gore is a f'ing genius :)

EDIT ok, thought about it some more and if I had to pick someone more on the rock side of the spectrum, I'd have to go with Coldplay (I get a lot of flak for that one!)

If I had to go full-on classic electronic, doesn't get any better than Underworld.

In terms of more modern electronic, my pick at the moment would be Mat Zo and Porter Robinson a close second.

Just learned something about Gibson guitar names...

ES-335? ES-325 TDW? ES-335 TDN (or TDC)? What do all those letters mean???

Well there is a method to the madness πŸ˜„

Take the Gibson ES-335 TDN for example:

  • ES stands for "Electric Spanish" (the ES-335 was designed in 1957 and Gibson needed a different naming from their EH - or "Electric Hawaiian" - lap steel guitars)
  • 335 is the model
  • T stands for "Thinline"
  • D stands for "Double-Pickup"
  • N is the color, "Neutral" in this case

TDC means Thinline, Double-Pickup, Cherry (or cherry sunburst) finish. TDW is the same thing, except Walnut finish.

Thought you Gibson fans might find this interesting!

I didn't wanna make a fool of myself and completely mess up what those scales are called! Nice work :) And yes I agree, they definitely have an archaic feel.

Posting New Gear

Hey boom762, normally we aim for a day or two but lately submissions have been skyrocketing and our moderators are swamped (it's a good problem to have... but we need to speed it up)!!

Top secret info πŸ˜„ --> We're actually working on a way where if people prove that they make good contributions (say, 2 or 3 solid and correct submissions), they will then gain the power to submit directly, without having to be in "pending" status first. Does that make sense?

Would love any feedback you all have on this!

Cobra Lead

Hey Viper! I'm a fan of Sander van Doorn's Identity show too :)

On this YouTube video the drop is at around 1:28:

https://youtu.be/cOaHjvuQiyk?t=1m26s

I don't know exactly how to make that lead. However, it's not all that different from other electro-house track leads. I'm more familiar with Sylenth than Serum or Massive, but one thing that took my productions to the next level was really learning how to make my own lead from scratch in Sylenth. In the beginning it was super easy for me to just cycle through endless presets and randomly tweak knobs. But actually learning sound design, especially for things like leads, risers, and random effects was huge! Try following along some sound design tutorials on YouTube. Here's a good one I found "How To Make the Perfect Saw Lead in Massive":

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGK4WfP8pUQ

I know in a previous post you mentioned not being able to use YouTube, so maybe you could find a written tutorial? I saw on your Equipboard that you're using FL Studio 10. Here's a written tutorial on making an electro lead/bass type sound using FL: http://howtomakeelectronicmusic.com/how-to-create-electro-lead-bass

I think once you really start figuring out what's what in Massive, you can replicate any lead you hear fairly easily (or at least come close to it). It's hard work learning sound design, but once you're there it's like a switch goes off and you can design just about ANYTHING!

Specific to the lead in the track Cobra, it sounds super widened to me, and has loads of reverb (seems like the original lead was doubled and the duplicate is washed in reverb). The way the melody is played gives this one a lot of character, too. Several staccato notes at the beginning which you can pull off in the piano roll, and then after that it's pretty easy to replicate.

I hope this helps

Black Lead

Ok no worries I'll post it, here it is for anyone wondering:

https://youtu.be/I2Id-FOnH_w?t=1m50s

Sounds like the breakdown starts around 1:50. Around 2:04 I hear a lead sound that progressively gets filtered in, and around 2:06 the lead is full on.

If that's the one you're talking about, it should be pretty straightforward! For the lead sound itself I'm sure you can find dozens of Massive or Serum presets that sound close to it. I think what gives this particular lead more weight is that there's white noise being played "behind" the notes, basically mirroring the melody. That's what gives is that sort of fuzzy sound. So grab a plain white noise preset for that one.

In terms of other effects, I hear subtle reverb, and the sound is nice and wide. Not sure if you've seen this post on mixing tips yet, but make sure to follow some of that advice. User a stereo widening plugin to widen the lead, and make sure to cut ALL the low frequencies you don't need that would muddy up the mix (try EQing out up to 400Hz, even higher on the white noise).

Black Lead

Hey viper! Did you know you can embed a YouTube video in this forum? I would suggest grabbing the link to the YouTube video for "Black", editing your forum post (just click "Edit your post" right below it), and pasting the link below your text.

That way, people can listen to it right away if they aren't familiar with the tune, and help you more easily :)

Oh and mention at what time in the video the lead sound you want comes in.

What's wrong with my guitar?!?!

The biggest source of buzz when I restring my guitars is actually kind of silly - I tend to not clip all of the excess after I wind the string and tune the guitar. It ends up looking a little like this (sorry for the bad photo, I found a random one on Google):

http://i.imgur.com/QCyYlpNm.jpg

Sometimes if excess string is touching some other part of the headstock, or my winding is not as neat as it should be, I will get that open string buzz. Seeing that yours is originating around the headstock, I would guess the problem is something similar (or loose parts, like crumby said).

Hi, newbie here. Please check out my soundcloud! Free Ep in playlist (see discription)

Hey sean_miller, welcome to the community! Congrats on the Korg Volca Beats purchase :)

I have a suggestion - in other forums, I have not seen it work well when someone just says "hey check out all my SoundCloud stuff". You might get a better response if you make your request more specific, like "hey can someone help me and give me feedback on this track?" and then link to a specific track.

I think people are generally more likely to help if you make your request for feedback as specific as possible - maybe a certain element of your track? "does this track feel well-mixed to you guys?" or "what do you think of the intro/verse/chorus/drop/whatever?"

Just my 2 cents :)

Great question! GearIQ is a way to see who has been putting awesome work into Equipboard - whether that's writing really helpful reviews about gear, or contributing the products artists are using. It's also a general symbol that allows our admins and moderators recognize who is contributing the most. We've been known to reward those with high GearIQ with anything from stickers, to t-shirts, to some sweet gear :)

We're also getting great feedback from the community about ways that GearIQ could be redeemed in for things like t-shirts, and maybe even headphones or guitar pedals, etc.

We'd love to hear your thoughts!

Telling apart Boss Digital Delay pedals

Hey gear hunters,

Sometimes I have trouble looking at an artist's pedalboard and telling which Boss Digital Delay they are using, since there are so many & the knobs all look the same! This photo helped me pick apart the differences:

http://i.imgur.com/RCual2C.jpg

You can see the DD-5 and DD-7 have the "Digital Delay" text staggered, as opposed to on a single line. Also, they all have slightly different "INPUT" and "OUTPUT" markings, which should help tell them apart.

Hope this helps! :)

How is FL Studio 11 good to produce Electronic Music

FL Studio is perfect for producing electronic music. Tons of pro artists are using it as their DAW of choice. If you haven't watched this video of Avicii producing a track in FL, you should - it's pretty cool watching how he works.

Help identifying these pedals?

I found another photo of his pedalboard:

http://img4.hostingpics.net/pics/760953Capturede769cran20141128a768120042.png

But it looks like the power supplies are hidden. I would be willing to bet it's a Voodoo Lab Pedal Power 2+, those seem to be the most used.

If I can find more pics of his pedalboard I'll post them!
