Review of Cympad Foam Cymbal Washers — Not So Modern Drummer

notsomoderndrummer.com

Cympad's Moderator washers introduce a refreshing alternative to traditional felt, effectively controlling cymbal sound while enhancing articulation. The larger sizes notably diminish volume and sustain without sacrificing stick response, proving useful for managing unruly cymbals in various settings. However, while the effectiveness varies by cymbal type, some drummers may find the impact subtle, particularly with more delicate models. The overall construction promises durability and consistency, setting these washers apart from standard options. A solid investment for drummers seeking innovative sound control solutions, Cympad's offerings could redefine your approach to cymbal management.

Gear Review: Cympad Cymbal Washers | Tom Tom Magazine

tomtommag.com

Cympad Moderators cleverly push the envelope on cymbal sound control, effectively muting harsh overtones while enhancing articulation. The softer foam does deliver noticeable sonic alterations, especially in studio settings. However, they can produce unwanted buzzing when overused on certain cymbals, which may frustrate some players. While they shine in acoustic settings, drummers who rely on their ride's bell sound may find the trade-offs less appealing. Overall, Cympad offers a fresh alternative to traditional felts, but musicians should consider their specific needs before making a switch.

These are essentially cellular foam replacements for the felts on cymbal stands and are offered in standard size (called Optimizers) as well as larger ones for volume control (called Moderators). I first used these at the Coach Road session we did on our first visit to the UK. The engineer A/B’ed the difference the Moderator models can make, and as soon as we got home from that trip, I purchased a full set. They give you a ton of versatility without having to change cymbals. As with many bands, the sizes of venues we play on a given tour can range from tiny coffee shops to 500-cap rooms with serious PA systems. The Moderators act similar to putting some tape on your cymbals to dampen the sound, however, they don’t alter the feel of cymbals nearly as much. Even the normal-sized ones are great for the times when you have to use backline hardware where the felts are typically blown out. (http://cympad.com)
