Critic Reviews

Cellular reproduction (MX Aug 94)

muzines.co.uk

The Digidesign SampleCell II positions itself as a worthy contender in the sampling world, especially with its combination of power and affordability for Mac users. Its features, such as 32-voice polyphony and an intuitive sound editor, are impressive, and the potential for extensive setup with multiple cards is a plus for serious users. However, it does come with caveats: the limited filtering options and the necessity to invest in RAM and additional outputs might deter some. Moreover, the lack of sample recording capability is a significant drawback. Still, for those already invested in Digidesign’s ecosystem, the SampleCell II could be a valuable addition, provided you're prepared for some initial setup hurdles.

Kondo used sounds from SampleCell II's factory library for much of his work during the late 90's and early 00's. Super Mario 64's main theme, for example, was nearly entirely composed with samples from it. As evidenced by the source codes of two other Nintendo games released during the same period, he and other composers used SampleCell II (explicitly referred to as "Samplecell-2" in multiple files) to create instrument banks that were later converted to the Nintendo 64 console's native format using an in-house tool.

In conjunction with Sound Tools Hague uses Digidesign's SampleCell sampler board, with its library on CD-ROM. Never having taken to the Akai samplers, which he finds too "fiddly" and their top end too "brittle", he enjoys SampleCell: "It has amazing fidelity and is incredibly easy to work with."

Evidence of Hughes' continued interest in technology lies in his attic studio which, though not stacked to the rafters with exotic gear, has considerable power vested in its pair of Apple Macintosh computers. They run Digidesign ProTools, SampleCell, and a gamut of sequencers and editors, and provide a pointer to the way studio technology is heading.
