Digidesign was founded in 1984 by Peter Gotcher and Evan Brooks, two UC Berkeley electrical engineering graduates who initially sold EPROM chips for drum machines under the name "Digidrums." Based in Berkeley, California, the company went on to fundamentally reshape the recording industry. In 1989, Digidesign released Sound Tools, widely recognized as the first tapeless recording studio for the Apple Macintosh. Two years later, the company launched Pro Tools, a multitrack digital audio workstation that became the dominant platform for professional music production, film scoring, and audio post-production worldwide.
Beyond Pro Tools software, Digidesign manufactured a wide range of audio hardware including the Digi 001, Digi 002, and Digi 003 FireWire interfaces; the Mbox and Mbox 2 USB interfaces aimed at project studios; and large-format control surfaces such as the Pro Control, Control|24, Command|8, and the flagship ICON D-Control and D-Command systems. The company also developed the VENUE live sound mixing platform for concert and touring applications. Digidesign's Pro Tools|HD systems, combining proprietary DSP hardware with the Pro Tools software, became standard equipment in major recording studios around the world.
Digidesign was acquired by Avid Technology in 1995. The Digidesign brand continued to operate as a division of Avid for fifteen years before being phased out in 2010, with all products folded under the Avid brand name.
Digidesign has 69 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Audio Interfaces, Compressor Plugins, and DAW Controllers. Their gear is featured by 151 artists, with the strongest followings in Rock, Electronic, and Pop. Notable users include Bono, Yasunori Mitsuda, and Owl City.
