Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about iZotope DDLY Dynamic Delay.

Features and functionality

  • It's noted for its unique threshold feature, allowing dynamic control over delay, which isn't commonly found in other delay plugins.

    Source
  • A workaround for recreating DDLY's effects includes using a gate combined with a standard delay on a send.

    Source
  • DDLY features a two-line delay that splits signals by level, allowing quiet and loud sounds to be processed separately, with analog-style controls for each line.

    Source
  • The plugin includes a grain delay mode, adding versatility for creating unique textures by smearing transients while leaving sustained parts untouched.

    Source
  • DDLY allows filtering the wet delay output directly within the plugin, which is a preference for users seeking more control over the delayed sound.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Sandman by Unfiltered Audio is recommended as a similar alternative with a unique character, though not an exact replacement.

    Source
  • DDLY's signal splitting by level is unique, with Blue Cat Late Replies offering a similar approach but requiring more complex setups using compressors and gates.

    Source
  • Physion offers a different signal separation method, using structural identification instead of level-based splitting, making it complementary to DDLY in a sound designer's toolkit.

    Source
  • Users frequently consider DDLY alongside Metric Halo Dirty Delay, noting both for their ability to filter wet outputs, catering to those seeking versatile delay textures.

    Source

User experience

  • Some users recall the graphical interface as unappealing, likening it to something recovered from the ocean, while others find it nostalgic and charming.

    Source
  • Owners find the grain delay mode engaging for sound design, often experimenting for extended periods due to its unpredictable and unique effects.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • Users have mentioned using DDLY effectively with DAWs like Ableton and Reaper by linking audio levels to parameters for similar dynamic effects.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • It's been used regularly by some for its distinctive dynamic delay effects, which were available during a free promotion in 2016.

    Source
  • Ideal for dynamic sources, DDLY can process transients and sustain differently to prevent mud, enhancing clarity in complex mixes.

    Source
  • The plugin's wide button enhances stereo imaging, making it suitable for adding depth to mixes through dynamic delay processing.

    Source
  • Some users enhance melodies and FX sounds by applying DDLY, specifically mentioning the grain delay for its ability to create "weird and fun" sounds.

iZotope's Dynamic Delay is free - and wonderful - CDM Create Digital Music

cdm.link

iZotope DDLY Dynamic Delay offers a compelling blend of dynamic response and dual delay lines, making it an intuitive and versatile tool for musicians. The plugin excels in both subtle and extreme settings, allowing for creative sound manipulation. However, its translucent interface can be a visual downside, reminiscent of outdated graphics, and the lack of preset saving may inconvenience some users. Despite these quirks, its innovative design and free offering make it a worthwhile download.

Good Fx

DDLY Dynamic Delay responds to your track's musical dynamics to create versatile and intriguing delays. It's a one-of-a-kind effects plug-in that delays the signal differently depending on the character of the sound, without turning your track to aural mud. Adjust the threshold to split your signal based on transients, then send it down two separate analog or granular delay paths.

Nice! Somewhat confusing

Lovely sounding delay and modulation! Interface is a bit confusing to me, and I definitely prefer Surreal Machines Dub Machines (Modnetic + Diffuse) to this, but this is still nice.

This is pretty cool!

It has two delays, who you use separated from each other, with their own settings! Sounds great!
