Description
The 1920s 4x14 "Dance Model" Snare Drum by Ludwig
The Ludwig 4″ × 14″ Dance Model was an early snare drum produced by Ludwig & Ludwig in the 1910s–1920s era, before the company became famous for later classics like the Black Beauty.
It was designed for dance bands and professional players during the big-band and vaudeville period, a time when snare drums needed sensitivity, articulation, and a versatile sound for a wide range of music.
Versatility: While not as loud as modern metal snares, its sound is prized for recording vintage styles or historical performance practice.
Date Range: Primarily 1910s–1920s, with most examples dated mid-to-late 1920s.
These drums are rare and sought after by collectors and vintage enthusiasts because they pre-date later famous Ludwig models, and represent early American drum manufacturing.
Early drums often had tube lugs (simple cylindrical hardware) rather than later imperial or modern lug designs.
Many surviving examples will have modern heads installed (e.g., plastic coated heads) because original calfskin heads wear out quickly on vintage drums.
Original snare wires are often replaced vintage versions used gut or silk wires, which give a distinct vintage snap.
This drum is considered collectible and rare today often found in private collections, vintage shops, or specialist vintage drum dealers.
Note: Some very rare early variants exist with solid mahogany wood shells, also from the Dance/Super Ludwig design family (albeit much rarer).
Tone: Warm, rich fundamental with quick, articulate response suited to dance band, early jazz, orchestral, and studio work.
Response: Shallow shell yields sensitive snare feel and good rimshot clarity.
Specs:
• Drum Diameter: 14 inches
• Shell Depth: 4 inches fairly shallow, giving a snappy, quick response that was popular for dance and orchestra work.
• Typical Material: Brass shell, often with nickel plating (“nickel-over-brass”) gives a warm, rich tone with bright top end.
• 2-Piece Heavy Shell: Early examples often used a heavy, welded two-piece brass shell with strong bearing edges for good resonance and projection.
• Lugs: Typically 6 or 8 tube lugs, depending on year/model variation early 6-lug versions are especially sought after.
• Throw-Off / Strainer: Early “Pat Pending” or period throw-off systems originals are prized by collectors.
• Hoops: Single-flanged metal hoops (nickel plated).
• Tension Rods & Claws: Period hardware, with tension rods holding the hoop; many vintage examples have original rods and claws.
