Parallel phasing

True, but if I wanted say a slow phase, and a fast phase, both on my signal, but without one phaser, phasing the other what would I do.

Summing those 2 signals, even if its the same phaser model, may have undesireable cancellations with them set differently resulting in bizarre volume drops and spikes at oddball frequencies. 2 different phaser models will certainly produce volume drops and spikes when summed into a single amplifier input. You will need to try it. Get 2 cheap ABY boxes or an amp with 2 independent channels that are electrically in phase and have at it. Borrow a ton of different phasers until you find a combination that produces the sound you want. I would start with 2 of the same phaser, go with something simple like a pair of phase 90s.

the standard series celestions that are now made in china are not as hot shit as they once were, the cost is outrageous too... if you are spending, buy old.... 1st generation V30s that were made exclusively for Marshall in the mid 80s are way better sounding than any V30 made since... I really regret not stealing the "Marshall Vintage" speaker from my '85 Marshall Studio15 before selling it, though I doubt I woulda got the big money for it if I had done a speaker swap.... guys who know prefer the 1st gen V30, just like nsot of us have a preference for G12M vintage too either pre-rola or black back for most folks who are hip to great tone

personally I tend to buy WGS speakers when I want a modern celestion, Warehouse makes cheaper and often better versions of the whole celestion line including a few discontinued models:

I was just kidding. Although not about dating only musicians if I ever feel bold enough to put myself back on the meat market again.

I like your country other than the monarchy. I could live there, though if I were to leave the states it would be for the south of France or northern Italy where my family comes from. You guys have notoriously bad weather and the coffee in the UK was piss weak.

actually, I am extremely deadpan when I'm joking.... I don't like to be overt about sarcasm, its funnier when people take you seriously for a few minutes.... I was married for 3 years and dated her for quite a few prior off and on and my ex STILL doesn't always know when I am taking the piss

35 Syndrome

that's my weak point with the pumpkins for sure, BC's voice.... its cool at first but grating by the end of an album.... when I saw them at the Spectrum here in Philly on the MCIS tour in '96 (or was it earlier? I am getting old) his voice was incredibly piercing through the PA bouncing around that giant Basketball stadium. I actually put earplugs in before going on the floor to join the pit.

to be fair, I tend to listen to mellower music since I turned 30, but I don't dislike the heavy music of my youth and still put it on sometimes... I'll check in next year at 36 and let you know if I can still deal with the Pumpkins and Soundgarden

A good amp is really inspiring, isn't it? Drop the pedal and fiddle with the amp until you can get her to respond with varying amounts of distortion to your picking dynamics and guitar volume settings, find the seet spots and prepare for classic rock bliss. If you have a Gibson style guitar with 2xVolume and 2xTone you are going to be floored at how many very, very different tones you can get from a british voiced amp just by changing your attack, adjusting the knobs and changing pickup positions. The real mojo is the middle pickup selector position. You wanna adjust your 2 volumes like a blend control (I really dig bridge at 8 or 9 and neck around 5 for a light overdrive rhythm sound), then flip to the bridge and volume up when you want another sound.... the trick is working all the control adjustments into your playing style so tis fluid. To me, Brit voiced amps with tone controls are more about using the tone controls to squeeze the right distortion character from the amp, not about balancing the highs and lows to suit your guitar. I err on the side of too much treble on the bridge pickup and then I use my guitar tone control when I want to tone it down some, that way the amp still crunches up well. THe great thing about this method is that when you open the bridge tone up you still have a ton of high end cut when you want to get your guitar way out front in the mix at shows..... I could go one, but I won't. Clever uses of your effects with your pseudo-marshall are another post entirely. Big mean British amps are a whole other planet when it comes to effects usage.

but working a song out by ear is the best training, especially if you can work it out by ear FROM MEMORY, my favorite game to play with myself (especially when playing bedtime songs for my son)... its also fun to put the tv on and try to play along to every piece of music in every show and commercial, just let your hands figure it out.... you will be surprised how fast and intuitive you can get

I remember the wonderful fun of being up all night with Lucian, then making more formula at 4:30am, getting in the shower, trying tog et dressed and out the door without him waking up again and then hustling to work and hoping not to get a frantic mother call before lunch.... then come home and repeat.... but he and I had a lot of bonding time watching rock concerts during those late night feedings....

can anyne loan me a few bucks?

I am just kidding dude. I don't need a loan for a $75k guitar when I need to buy a new car this year. That's more than I make in a year! No sane bank would give me a loan for this purpose either. But if someone wants to make a donation.....

I just wanted to humorously draw people's attention to an awesome and rare guitar from the end of the golden age of electrics. You never see a red 335 of this vintage. I think there are less than 10 known to exist. I mean, did you see her? Real red dot necks are so unusual and the red has that lovely watermelon fade from UV exposure. Maybe it looks like nothing special to someone who is not an old guitar afficianado, but its special.

Anyway, if I wanted to buy a vintage 335 from OK I would go with this refinished 59 hes got for under $20k. Its a possible refin and a neck replacement, but it all appears to be factory work from Kalamazoo. Devalues an otherwise expensive old axe without effecting its tone and playability. If you're not a collector you have to look at the ugly ducklings.... maybe next year... or the year after. One day I'll find that 64 or earlier 335 I can afford and then? til death do us part.... or maybe a 345 with a varitone converted to mono, that's a great axe too, but not too expensive.

Parallel phasing

that didn't answer the orginal question which was about 1 amp.... your suggestion's kidna obvious and would sound kinda cool though I might put a flange on one side and a phase on the other or at least 2 phasers with a different number of stages.... but that wouldn't work in 1 amp, the cancellations when summing the 2 phasers would probably make your tone too wonky

the whole thing is just kinda dumb anyway, phase is such an extreme effect (even a simple 4 stage phaser) that a little goes along way.... but something that might mmuse the OP is the Mutron Biphase, that is if he can come up with the 1200 bucks or more they run you in vintage collector circles

Sorry if I bored you. I tried to keepthe Marshall info simple and to the point, but I am not good at doing that. I love tube amps too much. I am not sure why you would use a drive pedal in front of a marshall JCM900 clone (looked your amp up) to get boston tones, but if it sounds right to you then great. I have more than a feeling you will discover lots of other cool ways to use your new fire-breathing behemoth.

Maschine studio vs Akai Mpc Touch? Upgrade suggestions??

  1. monitors with bigger woofers and different tweeters to give you a less midrange focused reference to check your mixes... I might consider spending a grand or more right there

  2. if you are using the 2i2's mic pres consider getting a nice outboard pre or pres .... I might invest in a 500 series lunchbox and however many modules I could fit in it

10yover 10 years ago

Fender Champion 100

oh, they model now? I am not a big fan of ANY integrated modelling amps.... modelling seems best when its done with fancy outboard processors that have great AD/DA conversion... the other problem with most modelling combos is that they build in the cab modelling and those impulse responses do not behave correctly through a traditional guitar speaker, they really need something way more full range to sound right... Line6's Amplifi seems to be aimed at correcting this fault, but personally if I get stuck with a modelling processor I like to disable the cab model and run it directly into a poweramp and a decent closed back cab and stick with an amp model that is suited to the cab I have available

it still feels all wrong like wearing your underwear outside your pants, then again superman and Madonna have been wearing underwear over a body stocking for years and they seem quite happy, so maybe I am just closed minded

Fender Champion 100

is that the affordable, itty bitty 2 tone fender tube amp with a 12ax7 and single 6V6 through a 6inch speaker? For some reason I am thinking the amp I am referring to is a champion 600 not 100, but I am not sure....

If we are talking about the same amp, I got one on trade 5 or 6 years ago and sold it right away. Its a good mod platform, but stock I did not care for it. There's a fixed blackface tonestack hidden between the two 12ax7 gain stages that is set in such a way that its boomy and farty with neck pickups but nasal and hollow sounding in the low midrange with all but the hottest bridge pickups. If you remove it the amp will be close to vintage spec and will sound more like Clapton's "Layla" tone. Of course, without the fixed tone stack eating all the gain up you will be low on headroom, so I guess fender was trying to provide more clean tone without spending on puts and knobs to let you adjust the tone settings yourself. I get the idea, but with the stock resistors network its just not happenin' for me or most players. Personally I do not play single ended amps to get a bone clean tone. Also, this amp is built on a crappy PCB, so if you want to mod it you need to be careful with the delicate board.

If you are talking about the powerful solid state amps branded "champion" then I have no direct experience with this particular model, but my experience with fender solid state amps in general is that they are not particularly nice sounding as solid state goes. When we talk about good solid state tones, its all about clean tone and Fender's transistor designs just don't have the best solid state clean. They are, however, affordable and loud and come with better sounding speakers than your average solid state amp at this price point.

10yover 10 years ago

Parallel phasing

you could try getting 2 ABY boxes maybe.... it probably won't work well though for various electrical reasons

in a sense a phaser is already a parallel design because it has 50% dry signal mixed with the sweeping, delayed filter tone to produce the phase shift

How to get this sound? - Post here to get ideas on how your favourite band gets their sound.

okay, not the bugera I thought it was

even my ac4 will vibrate enough stuff to annoy my son if he's not expecting me to unleash the rock

I don't think I've opened up a full 30 watts in Lu's presence before... at his age I am glad I no longer own a 100 watt marshall to tempt me. I used to turn up my plexi to 8 and point the cab(s) at adorable petting zoo animals (like goats) and watch them explode when I played an open E chord... you know, for kicks, but that's probably bad for toddlers, right?

4 input or 4 hole are what we call marshalls without master volumes. They are built on the plexi/tweed bassman pattern with 2 inputs per channel, 1 volume per channel and shared EQ and presence. Marshall made 4 hole amps from their founding at Jim's music shop in the early 60s starting with the original offset JTM45 on into the plexi era, then in metal face in the 70s and finally ending it after a few years of production with JCM800 cosmetics in the 80s. It wasn't reissued until 1988 and then the amps returned to late 60s plexi cosmetics though the circuit of the 1st reissue was more of 70s/80s affair (I owned one of these early RIs, great amp, but deadly loud). The 1st master volume marshalls appeared in the late 70s and evolved into the familiar single channel JCM800 amps of the 80s we saw behind all those hair bands. The last of the 4 input marshalls were produced in small quantities alongside the more popular 800 up until the split channel 800 appeared and the classic non master amps were discontinued. I know Bugera makes a 4 input marshall knockoff, given your quest for the Boston and Hendrix sound I thought you may have gotten one of those since both Sholz and Hendrix played 4 input Marshall amps. There are various models with 4 inputs and even within the same model there is a constant circuit evolution. Even the various reissues since '88 differ a bit right up to present.

OKAY! here's my white wale of colorful guitar tones.... the main wah sound on the chords doesn't seem like a big deal until you start trying to dial it in and over the years I have come to suspect studio trickery during mix down, but damned if I haven't heard them get it live once.....

anybody know how to replicate it? I think they are justs tandard vox wah users... I've gotten close with a vox wah into a compressor or limiter driving a JCM800 but its not really right.... thoughts?

Movall triple pedal shootout

It sounds like you have no NEED for anything top or bottom of range.... if you have the footswitch and it activates an extra gain stage or higher gain channel or whatever, then what the heck do you need to buy anything else for unless its so good you can't pass it up (which is my problem)? Because if you are just rooting around the internet looking for ways to spend money you can't really afford because its burning a hole in your (mom's) pocket? leave well enough alone

or if you must spend, get something simple but high quality, you already have 1 extra tone on this amp, go with a single function pedal that's best in class if you must....

I do not understand buying just to buy.

Submit a Non-music gear

Alright, now you're getting my actual opinion instead of my initial humorous response...

An equipment site encompassing all the arts is obviously not what they had in mind when they built it (if you are in any doubt the founders frequent the forum and have explained exactly why they started EB, trust me it was music related), hence why the music gear is carefully categorized and non-music gear does not even have an official category and you had to ask this question in the 1st place.... I mean, look at the forum categorization. Do you see a graphic design category? Or culinary arts? You are being intentionally obtuse; EB is a music site, but if they wanted to expand it I would not care that much. I would probably come on here a lot less if they changed it to include all outlets of creativity because I am fairly disinterested in, say, sculpture or blowing glass.... 2 cool artforms, but I feel like they can get their own sites, we finally have a music site that's like a super-pinterest but for musicians only and the forum is NOT populated entirely by jerks who flame eachother constantly and engage in political and religious arguments that turn schoolyard. It might be unwise to try to expand it too far and mess up a good thing.

Given my druthers I would see EB stay a site for musicians to review instruments and MUSIC equipment and link said stuff to famous users from music history and today. It works well this way and is fun and focused for the people who it was built for. If anything the site has been narrowing in a good way. I went to cullinary school as wella s art college. I am an accomplished painter, designer, illustrator and cook. I discuss those things on other forums unless asked. I don't go around adding Gustav Klimt and his paint brushes to EB just because I admire his work. He didn't play music. I don't particular want to see other non-musicians added or have people discuss their favorite videographers or interior decorators on the forum. Not interested unless it directly relates to music. Not because those artforms are uncool, just because they can (again) start their own sites.

I think some of your confusion stems from the fact that the mods and admins are overworked and can't keep up with all the crap submissions. They are trying to take out all the inappropriate stuff, but you guys have them overwhelmed. Maybe I am wrong, but I am pretty sure I am right about this.

10yover 10 years ago

Submit a Non-music gear

whatever, I'm not sure who half the actual musicians on this site are and I don't always even know what all the stupid boutique pedals on their huge, jackassy boards ae meant to do.... it can be ahrd to care if someone adds a famous fisherman and hispreferred bait 'n tackle.... its just as confusing to me as noise guitarists who have rows of glitch producing pedals and self oscillating fuzzes.... I swear some of these young 'pros' are just other users friends and family members! who has heard of them? I am not saying anything is invalid artistically but you can't ask me to care about it any more than I do about fishing, LOL... to me there are a lot of effects and things that are no more interesting than a fishing rod and designer watches certainly are cooler than a lot of crazy ambience pedals and stuff I will never want to try (whereas I love my collection of fancy watches and am sad to have parted with 2 recently)

Its Michael and GChiaren's server money, so maybe they should decide what's wasting space

DC Versus Marvel

when Marvel stole from DC in the 60s and 70s it seemed to be to add actual characterization to the DC characters who were sorely 2D until the 80s.... either that or it was spoofing DC like the shiar imperial guard.... the big exception is the stuff Kirby did for Marvel when he returned home after attempting to do his New Gods series with DC.... he really just revamped the whole thing and started over at Marvel after becoming disgusted with DC's editorial process so of course anything spun off from Kirby's cosmic characters is still very DCish.... in the days before creator control, this was bound o happen when a big name jumped ship

its hard for me to buy that Marvel is unoriginal, they can be hit or miss, but in the 60s Fantastic Four broke new ground in big ways and in the 70s Chris Claremont revolutionized what a superhero rag could be when he took over the X-Men... Marvel has literally rewritten the book over and over in the silver age making it possible for guys like Alan Moore to finish the job in the 80s
