Used on Shiftlett's intro guitar for "The Pretender", as stated by mix engineer Rich Costey in this March 2008 Sound on Sound interview.
"In the case of 'The Pretender' I had a couple of Urei 1176 compressors on Dave's guitar, to pump them up a bit and make them sound more aggressive whilst barely compressing. I had the Gates Sta-Level compressor on the clean guitar in the intro, with quite a lot of compression and a very slow recovery, plus a 33609 with a very short recovery time on Chris' rhythm guitars, to beef them up a little bit. I worked hard to make the octave guitars in the last chorus stick out. I ended up EQ'ing them with the 550a, in addition to the console, to make them cut through this formidable army of rhythm guitars. The rest was just rides. The stereo phase and flange guitars used in the track already had those effects on them."

I LOVE GRETSCHES!! Always have. I think it stems from being such a big Stray Cats fan growing up. This one is cool. TV Jones pickups. Bigsby. Sparkly binding. Very flash!! I think I bought it around the time we played Hyde Park in London and I’m pretty sure I played it a lot at that gig. I seem to remember playing it a lot on the “acoustic” tour around then too.
Chris Shiflett owns a Fender American Nashville B-Bender Telecaster, as listed on Reverb. This model is the official Fender version inspired by the original B-Bender design used by Clarence White of The Byrds, perfect for mastering pedal steel licks.
Chris Shiflett owns a Normandy Chrome Archtop Guitar with a Bigsby Vibrato Tailpiece, described as a striking aluminum guitar reminiscent of a compact Gretsch. Its distinctive look is highlighted under stage lights, as noted on Reverb.com.
Nick Rasculinecz, who produced the first two Foo Fighter records I played on, told me once that Burns 12 strings were the best so I picked this up on a tour stop in Seattle or Portland. I think I bought one for Nick too!
This is the model we based my Fender signature model off - the classic ’72 Telecaster Deluxe with wide-range pickups and the big ol’ Strat headstock. A great guitar!! Good for jangling.
Chris Shiflett can be seen using the Digitech Drop pedal At 15:00 in the youtube video of That pedal show.
Shiflett is listed as using Mesa Lone Star Combo amps on Mesa's website.
MF: How is your home studio coming together
CS: I have a Digi 002 at home, a drum set, some amps, mics and a little mic pre. It's funny, I was just thinking about this on the drive in. I have never spent enough time really getting to know how to operate Pro Tools, and every time I do, which is pretty infrequently, it just gets in the way of being creative. The thing that I use more than anything else is the Voice Memo on my iPhone.
Shifletts pedalboard is the 40x18" version of the ProSeries trailer trash board. It is the 40x18" version because the number of effects he has wouldn't fit on any of the smaller boards

Another funky old crackly lap steel that I never made much progress on. I’ve replaced this with a full on pedal steel that I still don’t know how to play!!
Seen on live pedalboard circa August 2021.
In a screenshot I captured from Chris Shiflett's live performance at the Reading Festival in 2000, there's a red/orange Boss pedal with four knobs visible. It appears to be a Boss DS-2 Turbo Distortion.
In this pic a view of his old board; a DD3 is seen
In this pic there is clearly a Boss BF2 visible
In this pic there is a Boss CH1 visible (plus settings)
The most right pedal in this pic is a Whirlwind A/B box
