George Michael's Gear
George Micheal used this guitar in the music video, Faith.
Used for Michael's vocals on Faith, as mentioned by sound engineer Chris Porter in this March 2013 Sound on Sound interview.
"The microphone he used on that album was a Neumann M49 at Puk that I ended up buying and still use today for quite a lot of vocal work. It's got a nice, controlled top end, so it's not harsh at the top but very, very open. One of the problems with early digital recordings was that you did tend to get quite a harsh top end that was a bit unforgiving. That has improved a lot over the years, but back then the Sonys and even the Mitsubishis had a ceiling on the top end that was almost like a glass wall. I found the M49 gave you a lovely warmth, a lovely depth with a controlled top end, which you could then accentuate without it becoming too metallic and unnatural.”
George Michael used a Linndrum on his "Faith" album.
According to this Musician magazine article, George Michael used a Fender Precision bass on the Faith album. He's credited for playing bass on "Hand To Mouth" and "Kissing A Fool".
According to this Musician magazine article, George Michael used a Roland Octapad on the Faith album.
In this still from footage of the Trojan Souls sessions circa. 1992, George Michael can be seen playing a Status bass, one belonging to Deon Estus.
This article lists the Roland D-50 preset sounds for a couple of songs off the "Faith" album.
George Michael had this to say about the Roland D-50 in an interview published in the December 1987 issue of International Musician & Recording World magazine:
"I think the D-50 is brilliant, but a little bit too grand. And I still haven’t worked out easily how to get the reverb off some of the pre-sets. There’s loads you can do with it, especially in conjunction with the separate programming unit, but I haven’t got the patience. The thing that makes me nervous about it is, because it’s new, I expected to hear two of the three really great presets on record by the time we could get around to using them. And sure enough, I’ve already heard them on the [new] Michael Jackson album [Bad]."
George Michael used a Roland Juno 106 for bass and strings on his "Faith" album.
Used for Michael's vocals on "Faith", as mentioned by sound engineer Chris Porter in this March 2013 Sound on Sound interview. Despite Porter's mention of the 224, the mix settings (which can be found here) reveal it to be a 224x.
"I only used a few effects for George's vocals. The Lexicon 224 produced those extended high-frequency pings that you can hear on the reverb-y vocals, and there was also the AMS RMX16 reverb and DMX 1580 delay line. The real characteristic vocal sound right the way through 'Faith' and beyond was an AMS 30-millisecond delay panned slightly left of centre, a 45-millisecond delay slightly right of centre; sometimes with pitch variation on each side, but generally not.
According to this Musician magazine article, the Roland S-50 was one of the synths George Michael used on the Faith album.
George uses (used) a Sennheiser SKM 5200 microphone with a Neumann KK 105 capsule, straight off the shelf, and EM 3732-II dual receivers.
The ‘25 Live’ tour is also deploying 18 channels of evolution EW 300 G2 in-ear wireless with multiple receiver packs.
