On pg. 3 of this interview in Tone Quest Report Vol. 9 #5, published March 2008, Mike Campbell states the following about the Echoplex:

In the early days, there weren’t many pedals that I’d use. I would use the preamp in the Echoplex for my edge if I needed distortion, as the Super Beatles were really clean. I think the secret to my distortion and sustain is the Echoplex driving into the Super Beatle. I occasionally used a wah wah, but most of my sound is that old, noisy tube Echoplex into the Super Beatle.

This unit powers on however it will need repairs to get it to function properly. Upon testing it just produces a very loud buzz/hum and nothing else. Not exactly sure what the diagnosis is so a professional will likely have to open it up and diagnose.

"Out of the Fender reverb it goes into the Little Lab Splitter. It has one in and three out. Plus there's a couple outs in the back. This Watkins Copy Cat Tape is owned by Mike Campbell

Cosmetically the unit is in pretty good shape other than a few small scuffs and rips here and there. The inside tolex is also coming apart. This unit is currently non functioning and will need to be repaired. There is a piece of tape with it that is currently held together with blue tape but it will likely need a new tape entirely.

The unit passes signal and the "gain" functions but the echo does not work. Again this unit will need some repairs to get it to full functionality but with the right expertise it could be pretty close!

There are some scuffs and scratches here and there but overall cosmetically this unit is in pretty good shape. Functions completely as intended.

Mentioned by recording engineer Richard Dodd in this Sound on Sound interview about the recording of "Learning to Fly".

"One of the amplifiers Mike was using was an open-back Ampeg, and I had a Shure SM57 on that while, to capture some low end, I had the bright idea of also sticking one of those flat PZM microphones onto the amp. It was the Radio Shack mic, not the posh Crown version, and I just blended that in. Being omnidirectional, it gave a little of the environment, and those mics were blended together and went through a Urei 1176. Typically, the pre would be an outboard Neve 1073 or an API, and only things like percussion would use the preamps on the console.

"The same recording method was used for the other guitars, with the exception of the PZM.

This unit is in pretty good shape overall. There are some scuffs and scratches herre [sic] and there as well as some dust but the unit does function. There is a big piece of tape covering the screen that has Mikes initials. We DO NOT have a power supply with this unit unfortunately.
