Moby's Gear
"...The item can be seen 2:37 into this video..."
As I browsed through the sleeve notes on Moby's albums I noticed that the gear lists documented in the 1995 release Everything Is Wrong are almost identical to his current setup. Could it really be possible that this successful musician had no spare cash to spend on new studio gear during the last four years? "From Everything Is Wrong until now I've bought a vocoder and a new sampler and that's about it. On the one hand I'd love to get a bunch of new equipment, but on the other hand there's something to be said for working with equipment with which I'm comfortable. I'm thinking that at some point I will actually switch over and get a full Pro Tools setup and start doing things more in the computer, but for this record I didn't feel compelled to do that."

This Red Witch Titan is part of the private collection of Moby.
Taking the idea of innovation to a new level – the Titan's triumvirate of time tantalizers allows you to create an array of truly unique and original delay sounds. Voiced for the ultimate analog styled sound, the Titan provides three 1,200 millisecond delays that can be used in either series or parallel mode simply by flicking a switch.
The device can be used to create simple repeats or it can dial up gorgeous, intricate cathedral like reverberations - your imagination is your only limit. We use the classic analog delay compounder to ensure the ultimate recreation of an analog flavored delay, which works hand in hand with our more contemporary delay engines.
An original version of the Red Witch Titan, now rare and complete with long knobs for each delay setting. An awesome piece from Moby's collection.

This Echoplex EP-4 Tape Echo is part of the private collection of Moby.
In the mid-1970s, Market created an upgrade to the EP-3, designated the EP-4, adding features such as an LED input meter and tone controls and dropping the sound-on-sound feature.
The EP-4 has an added output buffer to help improve impedance matching with other equipment. A compressor board based on the CA3080 transconductance amplifier was added to the record circuit of both the EP-3 and EP-4 models for a short while after the EP-4 model was introduced and then the compressor board was dropped from both the EP-3 and EP-4 models.
The EP-3 model was also offered for sale alongside the EP-4 model after the EP-4 was introduced. Battle's final consulting with Market yielded the EM-1 Groupmaster, which offered a four-channel input mixer section and a mono output section.
Dissatisfied with the transistor-minded direction Maestro was taking, Butts left the company.[2] In the mid-1970s Maestro also created the ES-1 Sireko (pronounced "Sir-Echo"), a simplified, echo-only unit with a bin-loop cartridge system.

Second Listing
This Wurlitzer Side Man Standing Drum Machine Model 5000 Kit 9021 is part of the private legendary drum machine collection of Moby.
The Rudolph Wurlitzer Company released an early commercially produced drum machine called the Sideman in 1959. It was an “electro-mechanical” drum machine that offered a choice of 12 electronically generated predefined rhythm patterns with variable tempos.
The sound source was a series of vacuum tubes which created 10 preset electronic drum sounds. The drum sounds were ‘sequenced’ by a rotating disc with metal contacts across its face, spaced in a certain pattern to generate parts of a particular rhythm. Combinations of these different sets of rhythms and drum sounds created popular rhythmic patterns of the day, e.g. waltzes, fox trots etc. These combinations were selected by a rotary knob on the top of the Sideman box.
The tempo of the patterns was controlled by a slider that increased the speed of rotation of the disc. The Sideman had a panel of 10 buttons for manually triggering drum sounds, and a remote player to control the machine while playing from an organ keyboard. The Sideman was housed in a portable wooden cabinet that contained the sound generating circuitry, amplifier and speaker.
Serial: 614921. Doesn't fully work. Turns on and individual drums trigger however the sequencer doesn't work. Has constant noise. Sold As-Is.

This Guild MG10C-1 Amp & Rhythm Machine is part of the private legendary drum machine collection of Moby.
Hilarious rhythms and sounds. Lots of fun. The guitar amp part actually sounds great too. It still has the original 2-1/2 inch tweeter while the 12 inch, 250 watt aluminum cone driver that has been installed does a beautiful job handling the percussive bass tones that this thing puts out. If you get this, don't be dismayed if it seems a bit idiosyncratic.
We've put it through it's paces and we've determined that everything functions as it should., just needs a little getting used to. Sometimes it needs to warm up a little before a few of the settings start working 100% (i noticed it mostly in waltz mode). Don't ask me why, it's almost as if this thing has a mind of its own.

This Concert RF-5 is part of the private legendary drum machine collection of Moby.
Concert RF-FIVE is a little wood-veneered preset rhythm unit featuring five onboard rhythms (hence its name) and a lovely warm, mellow sound. We particularly like the kick, which is thick and almost woolly played “raw” but which comes to life in a really interesting way if you dial in some saturation and compression.
The snare is very laid-back and the hats tick away very nicely… plus there’s a neat little woodblock / click sound hidden away in there too.
Works. Missing ”slow-rock” button. Sold As-Is.

This National Automatic Rhythm is part of the private legendary drum machine collection of Moby.
National is a brand name belonging to Matsushita electronics, who are better known outside Japan under another brand name, Panasonic. I’m not aware of other musical instruments sold under the National name, so I was surprised to see this drum machine show up for sale.
Until 2009, Matsushita used the National name almost exclusively for home appliances (washing machines, microwaves etc.), keeping the Panasonic name for audio & video, so a National drum machine was unexpected… This drum machine is pretty standard for the era, similar to a Rhythm Ace. It does have three cancel switches (snare, clave, cymbal), which provides a little extra versatility, and a somewhat different set of preset rhythms (eg. Teen Beat, African Beat and Kwela).
The sounds are standard for the time: tuned bass drum, toms, percussion and snare “bottom”, noise burst for cymbal, maracas and snare. As usual for this kind of device, multiple preset buttons can be pressed at the same time, creating variations I’m sure even the designers didn’t really expect… Following is a scan of the original Japanese spec sheet. The list price was 56,000 yen, which amounts to more than 600 US dollars… Ouch! But that’s OK because it had a fantastic “touch start” feature!
Serial: 721088. Works without issue.

In a photo on Moby's official website, showcasing his studio setup, a pair of HP 2010i monitors is visible. Additionally, discussions with monitor enthusiasts on Discord suggest these are likely the monitors in question.
"...Casio's strange VL-1 instrument sold 1,000,000 units between 1979 and 1984. Trio, the German band, used it to record their huge hit "DaDaDa", and bands like Human League, Devo, The Cars followed suit. And 30 years later it is still backing tracks by Moby and Fergie. ..."
